Leuconostoc species-associated endocarditis.

Leuconostoc species are gram-positive cocci belonging to the Streptococcaceae family. The species were generally regarded as nonpathogenic and of little importance in clinical microbiology until several occurrences of Leuconostoc infections were reported in the literature. Unlike many gram-positive bacteria, Leuconostoc species commonly demonstrate high-level resistance to vancomycin, with preserved sensitivity to most other antibacterial agents. We describe a 55-year-old man who developed endocarditis caused by Leuconostoc species sensitive to vancomycin. The patient received an aortic valve

Comparative Effects of Leuconostoc lactis and Leuconostoc mesenteroides Starters on Kimchi Fermentation Dynamics and Metabolite Profiles.

This study evaluated the effects of two Leuconostoc starter-Leuconostoc (Leu.) lactis DMLL10 and Leu. mesenteroides KACC 12312T-on kimchi fermentation characteristics, microbial dynamics, and metabolite production. Kimchi samples were fermented at 4°C for 20 days, and changes in pH, titratable acidity, viable cell counts, organic acids, amino acids, and volatile compounds were analyzed using GC-MS, HPLC, and multivariate statistical methods. Both starters successfully initiated fermentation, but clear differences in metabolic patterns were observed. Leu. lactis DMLL10-inoculated kimchi showed

[Infectious endocarditis caused by Leuconostoc mesenteroides].

BACKGROUND: Leuconostoc spp. are gram-positive coccobacilli, catalase and oxidase negative, vancomycin resistant, with a not clearly defined role in human infectious. Cases of infection have been reported previously but it has not been described confirmed infective endocarditis due to Leuconostoc mesenteroides. METHODS: We describe a case of prosthetic valve endocarditis in a 72-years-old woman with a long previous history of cardiac disease but without other immunological disorders. She developed a heart failure because of prosthetic aortic valve dysfunction. CONCLUSIONS: Leuconostoc mesent

[Case report: two Leuconostoc bacteremia cases].

Leuconostoc species, which are the members of Streptococcaceae family, have recently been recognized as potential pathogens. They usually cause infections in patients with underlying disease, with venous catheters or previously treated with vancomycin. In this report, we have presented two cases of Leuconostoc bacteremia. The first case was a 42 years old male patient who was diagnosed to have colon adenocarcinoma. He had undergone colon, stomach and distal pancreas resection operation and had given chemotherapy. Blood and catheter cultures yielded methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

Leuconostoc bacteremia in three patients with malignancies.

Leuconostoc is a Gram-positive coccus characterized by its resistance to glycopeptide antibiotics. Generally, this bacterium is susceptible to β-lactam antibiotics; however, here we present a leukemia patient who developed leuconostoc bacteremia during antimicrobial therapy with carbapenem. The appropriate choice of antibiotics at optimal doses enables leuconostoc infection to be overcome, even in compromised hosts. We report 3 cases of leuconostoc bacteremia: the leukemia case which was successfully treated, along with discussions of two other cases with malignancies.

Leuconostoc species endocarditis in an intravenous drug user.

Infective endocarditis is a potentially lethal infection, which predominantly affects the atrioventricular valves. Rapid identification and management is critical to reduce morbidity and mortality in this patient population. Herein, we present a case of a 24-year-old man with Leuconostoc species infective endocarditis of the aortic valve. Disease course was complicated by several septic emboli to the brain, central retinal artery, and spleen. This case serves to remind clinicians that Leuconostoc species, which are typically not pathogenic to human species, can cause infective endocarditis in

Leuconostoc bacteremia in a child with short-gut syndrome.

In the last decade Leuconostoc species have been reported with increasing frequency as human pathogens, causing bacteremia, meningitis and peritonitis. We report here a child with short-bowel syndrome who developed bacteremia following multiple surgeries for necrotizing enterocolitis. Leuconostoc species was isolated from the blood cultures. The child was successfully treated with ampicillin and gentamycin. He however remained total parenteral nutrition dependent due to his multiple abnormalities. We call the attention of microbiologists and pediatricians to this emerging pathogen, which is in

Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides-associated hemophagocytic syndrome: A case report.

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a rare hyperinflammatory syndrome characterized by fever, pancytopenia and splenomegaly. The underlying hemophagocytosis occurs primarily in the bone marrow, liver and lymph nodes. Multiple microbiological agents, including cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus and Mycobacterium tuberculosis, have been implicated in the pathogenesis of HLH. The present study presents a case of HLH associated with Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides infection treated successfully with clindamycin. A 33-year-old man presented with recurrent episodes of fever and diarrhea. Up

Occurrence and properties of bacteriophages of Leuconostoc oenos in Australian wines.

Bacteriophages specific for Leuconostoc oenos were isolated from four red wines undergoing malolactic fermentation in one winery. Bacteriophages were not found in samples of 16 other wines. The morphology of the phages was examined by electron microscopy. The phages did not lyse all strains of L. oenos, and susceptibility correlated to some extent with the colony morphology of the strain. Phage survived in wines at pH values greater than 3.5 but was inactivated in wines of lower pH and by the addition of sulfur dioxide or bentonite. Phage did not affect the growth of a sensitive strain of L. o

Location of repeat elements in glucansucrases of Leuconostoc and Streptococcus species.

Glucosyltransferases of oral streptococci, dextransucrases and alternansucrase of Leuconostoc mesenteroides, collectively referred to as glucansucrases, are large extracellular enzymes that synthesise glucans with a variety of structures and properties. A characteristic of all these glucansucrases is the possession of a C-terminal domain consisting of a series of tandem amino acid repeats. These repeat units are thought to interact with glucan but closely resemble the cell wall binding domain motif found in choline binding proteins in Streptococcus pneumoniae and surface-located proteins in a

Leuconostoc mesenteroides WHH1141 ameliorates ovalbumin-induced food allergy in mice.

Food allergy (FA) is acknowledged as a significant public health and food safety issue, due to its manifestation as an amplified immune reaction to food antigens. Recently, probiotics within Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium have been highlighted as a promising strategy against allergic disease by modulating the balance of Th1/Th2 responses. However, the allergy-alleviating effects of probiotic Leuconostoc mesenteroides strains are unknown. Therefore, this study investigated the potentials of eleven L. mesenteroides strains on the Th1/Th2 balance in vitro by evaluating the expression patterns

Biochemical characterization of a homocysteine S-methyltransferase from Leuconostoc suionicum.

We identified and characterized a homocysteine S-methyltransferase (HMT) from the lactic acid bacterium Leuconostoc suionicum LT-38, representing the first characterization of an HMT from lactic acid bacteria. The enzyme exhibited a kcat/Km value of 15.7 mM-1 s-1 toward L-homocysteine. It showed optimal activity at 30 °C and pH 7.5 and remained stable over a broad range of temperatures (30-60 °C) and pH values (5-9). The enzyme accepted both L- and D-homocysteine as methyl acceptors but displayed markedly higher catalytic efficiency toward the L-form (~30-fold). In contrast, L- and D-cysteine

Leuconostoc mesenteroides bacteremia in a patient with exposure to unpasteurised raw milk.

Leuconostoc spp are lactic acid-producing bacteria closely related to the Streptococcus family. While usually associated with the fermentation of dairy products and sauerkraut, they are rarely associated with human infections. This is a case report of an immunocompetent patient found to have L. mesenteroides bacteremia associated with raw milk and poor dentition as the likely source of infection, which was treated successfully with daptomycin as this genus is intrinsically resistant to vancomycin.

A Rare Case of Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides Bacteremia and Refractory Septic Shock.

Leuconostoc species are rare causes of bacteremia and are commonly mistaken for Streptococcus species. Due to their inherent resistance to commonly used drugs, they are often overlooked resulting in poor and sometimes lethal outcomes. While there are not many reported cases of this bacterial infection, Leuconostoc species are important to consider when faced with a highly drug-resistant bacterial strain. We present here a case of a 29-year-old male who presented with an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, initially resuscitated but ultimately succumbing to his illness. This is a unique case in whi

Leuconostoc lactis- A Rare Cause of Bacterial Meningitis in an Immunocompromised Host.

Leuconostoc lactis, often found in fermented dairy products, although considered to have a low pathogenic potential, can cause life-threatening infections in immunocompromised hosts. We herein report a 62-year-old man with a history of alcoholic liver cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and diabetes mellitus who developed a very rare case of bacterial meningitis caused by this organism. After we administered antibiotics including ampicillin, he recovered completely within two weeks. This gram-positive coccus (GPC) is sensitive to ampicillin but naturally resistant to vancomycin, while its sus

Peritonitis due to Leuconostoc species in a child receiving peritoneal dialysis.

Leuconostoc species are rarely pathogenic in humans, but may cause infection in patients at risk. A 7-year-old girl with p-ANCA-positive crescentic glomerulonephritis, treated with peritoneal dialysis, developed peritonitis due to Leuconostoc species. She had a history of treatment with vancomycin and a brief course of immunosuppressive therapy. The peritonitis responded well to ampicillin therapy. To date, only 47 cases of Leuconostoc infection, including our patient, have been reported in the medical literature; 25 of the cases occurred in children. Only 1 prior case has been reported in the

[Use of a freeze-drief culture of Leuconostoc mesenteroides for the synthesis of dextran].

The influence of a prolonged storage of the freeze-dried culture Leuconostoc mesenteroides strain SF-4 on its capacity for the dextrane synthesis has been studied. The culture has maintained its normal viability for 12 years (the observation time) without changes in the cell morphology and capacity for the dextrane synthesis. The structure of dextrane synthesized by the revived culture L. mesenteroides has been similar to that of dextrane synthesized by the culture L. mesenteroides preserved via passages.
