Relevance of feline calicivirus, feline immunodeficiency virus, feline leukemia virus, feline herpesvirus and Bartonella henselae in cats with chronic gingivostomatitis.

Despite its common occurrence, the aetiology of chronic gingivostomatitis in cats remains uncertain. Aetiology is likely multifactorial, and several infectious agents may be associated with chronic gingivostomatitis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of feline calicivirus (FCV), feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), feline leukemia virus (FeLV), feline herpesvirus (FHV), and Bartonella henselae (B. henselae) in cats with chronic gingivostomatitis and in an age-matched control group. In addition, other factors, e. g., environmental conditions were investigated. In 52 ca

Feline leukemia virus and feline immunodeficiency virus infections in a cat with lymphoma.

Lymphoma was diagnosed in a 7-year-old domestic cat found to be infected with FeLV and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). The cat was affected by chronic disorders suggestive of immunosuppression, including gingivitis, periodontitis, keratitis, and abscesses. Despite treatment, peripheral keratitis of the left eye progressed, resulting in uveitis, chronic glaucoma, and eventual corneal rupture. Microscopic retinal and optic disk pathologic processes also were suspected. Abnormal jaw movements that were believed to be indicative of neurologic disease were observed. Approximately 17 months lat

Acute monoblastic leukemia in a feline leukemia virus-negative cat.

A 12-year-old female domestic short-haired cat was presented due to weight loss, anorexia, and tachypnea. Complete blood count revealed severe anemia, leukocytosis with massive undifferentiated blast cells, and thrombocytopenia. Bone marrow aspiration showed acute myeloid leukemia, subclassified as monoblastic leukemia (M5a) based on the outcomes of the cytochemistry examinations. The SNAP feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) test using whole blood was negative. In addition, FeLV/FIV proviral polymerase chain reaction test using bone marrow aspirate was also neg

Feline lymphoma associated with feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) infections in Brazil- Systematic review.

Lymphoma is the most common neoplasia in cats and is frequently linked with concurrent retroviral infections. Despite preventive strategies, feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) remain endemic in many parts of the world, with FeLV significantly shortening the lifespan of infected cats. In Brazil and other low-income countries, the incidence of FeLV and FIV remains high. However, the distribution of these retroviruses across South America is still unclear, and their correlation with the anatomical and clinical features of feline lymphoma remains poorly understood

Cerebral toxoplasmosis in a cat with feline leukemia and feline infectious peritonitis viral infections.

A diarrheic young cat died after neurological involvement. Biochemistry pointed to feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). The final diagnosis was severe multifocal meningoencephalitis due to Toxoplasma gondii. The presence of the parasite in the brain was confirmed using immunohistochemical staining. Concomitant feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and FIP were possible contributors to the clinical, fatal outcome.

Animal shelter management of feline leukemia virus and feline immunodeficiency virus infections in cats.

Approximately 5% of cats in animal shelters in the United States test positive for either feline leukemia virus (FeLV) or feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), which translates to more than 100,000 positive cats managed by shelters each year. Little is known about the current status of retroviral management in animal shelters, particularly in regions burdened by chronic pet overpopulation and high shelter admissions, such as the southern United States. The purpose of this study was to describe feline retroviral management in Florida shelters. Shelters were surveyed on practices including select

Erythrocyte macrocytosis in feline leukemia virus associated anemia.

Using erythrocyte volume distribution histograms (erythrograms), erythrocyte macrocytosis and anisocytosis were quantitated in 139 cats tested for feline leukemia virus group-specific antigen. Feline leukemia virus-negative cats with non-regenerative anemia or normal packed cell volumes had normal mean corpuscular volume values. Uninfected cats with regenerative anemia had prominent significantly increased macrocytosis and anisocytosis (p less than 0.01). Ninety percent of 62 feline leukemia virus-positive cats had altered erythrograms. Thirty-three feline leukemia virus-positive cats with non

Cryptosporidiosis in a feline leukemia virus-positive cat.

A 4-year-old FeLV-positive cat with a 1-year history of intermittent diarrhea and subsequent anorexia, depression, and weight loss had enteric cryptosporidiosis at necropsy. Cryptosporidium sp is an important cause of gastroenteritis and diarrhea in various species, including human beings with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. A major determinant of the severity of the disease caused by Cryptosporidium sp is the immunologic status of the affected animal. Cryptosporidiosis should be included in the differential diagnosis of protracted diarrhea in FeLV-positive cats. Because cryptosporidiosis

Apparent feline leukemia virus-induced chronic lymphocytic leukemia and response to treatment.

Chylothorax secondary to chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) was diagnosed in a feline leukemia virus (FeLV)-positive 8-year-old castrated male domestic shorthair feline. The leukemia resolved following therapy with chlorambucil, prednisone, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, and lomustine. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of CLL in an FeLV-positive cat. Although a causative relationship cannot be proven, patients diagnosed with either disease may benefit from diagnostics to rule out the presence of the other concurrent condition.

Molecular analysis and pathogenesis of the feline aplastic anemia retrovirus, feline leukemia virus C-Sarma.

We describe the molecular cloning of an anemogenic feline leukemia virus (FeLV), FeLV-C-Sarma, from the productively infected human rhabdomyosarcoma cell line RD(FeLV-C-S). Molecularly cloned FeLV-C-S proviral DNA yielded infectious virus (mcFeLV-C-S) after transfection of mammalian cells, and virus interference studies using transfection-derived virus demonstrated that our clone encodes FeLV belonging to the C subgroup. mcFeLV-C-S did not induce viremia in eight 8-week-old outbred specific-pathogen-free (SPF) cats. It did, however, induce viremia and a rapid, fatal aplastic anemia due to prof

Cooperating events in lymphomagenesis mediated by feline leukemia virus.

Feline leukemia virus (FeLV)-mediated lymphomagenesis in the domestic cat has been examined as a model of lymphoid malignancy in a naturally outbreeding population. The pathogenesis of two distinct, naturally occurring types of FeLV-induced tumors has been investigated: (1) a thymic lymphoma of T-cell origin, typical of FeLV-induced lymphoma, and (2) an extrathymic, extranodal lymphoma of non-B non-T-cell origin. The genetic features of these tumors are clearly distinguishable, and include determinants encoded both by the virus and the host. Virally encoded determinants of pathogenesis include

Feline leukemia virus variants in experimentally induced thymic lymphosarcomas.

This study was initiated to evaluate the in vivo infectivity and pathogenicity of a group of recombinant feline leukemia viruses (rFeLVs) previously generated by in vitro forced recombination between a FeLV subgroup A virus (FeLV-A) and an endogenous FeLV (enFeLV) envelope (env) element (Sheets et al., 1992, Virology 190, 849-855). To determine infectivity of rFeLVs, neonatal cats were inoculated with rFeLVs alone or in combination with FeLV-A. The recombinant viruses were able to replicate efficiently in vivo only when administered along with FeLV-A. Of six co-infected cats, three developed t

In Situ Hybridization of Feline Leukemia Virus in a Case of Osteochondromatosis.

Osteochondromatosis, also known as multiple cartilaginous exostosis, polyostotic osteochondroma, and multiple osteochondromas, comprises one-fifth of all primary bone tumors in cats, with no breed or sex predisposition or hereditary pattern. Unlike in dogs, horses, and humans, it is predominantly seen in young cats (2-4 years old), after the maturation of the skeleton. Although the pathogenesis of osteochondromatosis is not fully understood, it is considered to be related to infection by feline leukemia virus (FeLV) or other retroviruses, such as the feline sarcoma virus. However, the presence

Spectrum of care approach to animal shelter management of feline infectious peritonitis complicated by feline leukemia virus.

INTRODUCTION: Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) occurs most commonly in multi-cat environments such as animal shelters. FIP is often suspected based on compatible history, signalment, physical examination, and hematological and biochemical findings. Increased diagnostic certainty requires additional diagnostic imaging and laboratory testing that may be out of reach for resource-poor caregivers and organizations. The objective of this retrospective study was to evaluate response to GS-441524 (GS) therapy of cats diagnosed with FIP using a spectrum of care approach relying on physical examinat

Seroprevalence of feline leukemia virus, feline immunodeficiency virus and heartworm infection among owned cats in tropical Mexico.

Several infectious agents may be distributed within a healthy population of cats where diverse risk factors predispose them to come into contact with pathogens. Blood samples from 227 owned cats in Merida, Mexico, were collected with the objective of determining the seroprevalence and associated risk factors of feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and Dirofilaria immitis antigen, and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) antibody. Serological detection of FeLV and D immitis antigens, and FIV antibodies was performed using the commercial kit SNAP Feline Triple Test. The prevalence was found to be 7.5% fo
