[Oral leukoedema--sequela of an artifact].

A 23-year-old white female with a history of psychological instability presented with burning, adhesive, white plaques of the buccal mucosa. She had been unsuccessfully treated for 1.5 years with topical retinoids as well as topical and systemic corticosteroids. The differential diagnoses included leukoplakia, cheek biting and lichen planus. Clinical and histopathological examinations suggested the diagnosis of severe oral leukoedema. Careful history and clandestine surveillance of the patient finally revealed the lesions to be due to a caustic (over-the-counter product for the treatment of co

Leukoedema: a review of the literature.

Leukoedema, a grayish-white lesion of the oral mucosa in humans, was once thought to be a probable precursor to leukoplakia. Clinical examination differentiates leukoedema from leukoplakia, lichen planus, white sponge nevus, and pathomimia morsicatio buccarum. Prevalence rates vary greatly in different countries and in different ethnic groups. For many years, leukoedema was alleged to occur only in adult populations until Martin and Crump found this lesion in children and youth. There is a definite predilection for this lesion in black Americans. Although the etiology is unknown, it has been s

Oral health status of institutionalized elderly Cape Coloreds from the Cape Peninsula of South Africa.

A study has been conducted to assess the oral health status and need for dental treatment among elderly Cape Coloreds resident in homes for the aged in the Cape Peninsula of South Africa. This paper describes the prevalence of diseases of the mouth with special reference to denture-induced lesions and white lesions of the oral mucosa. Dental caries was the most prevalent oral lesion (27.2%). The most common conditions of the soft tissues were leukoedema (24.4%) and leukoplakia (4.4% for the tongue; 20.4% for the remainder of the oral mucosa). Leukoedema and leukoplakia showed statistically hig

Evaluation of oral mucosal lesions in 598 referred Iranian patients.

The mucosal membrane of the oral cavity displays at times classical developmental lesions considered to be variations of normal structures rather than having disease characteristics. Of these lesions leukoedema, Fordyce granules, geographic-, fissured- and hairy tongue, median rhomboid glossitis and lingual varices were studied in 598 patients referred to the School of Dentistry, Tehran, Iran. The prevalence was studied in relation to age, gender, occupation, education, smoking habits, general health, addictions and or drug therapies. Oral developmental lesions were seen in 295 patients (49.3%

Preliminary report on prevalence of oral cancer and precancerous lesions among dental patients in Saudi Arabia.

The study consisted of 674 consecutive examinations done on patients on their first visit the College of Dentistry, King Saud University, Riyadh, over a 1-yr period starting January 1983. Men outnumbered women and 69% of the patients were Saudi Arabian nationals. Oral cancer was seen in one non-Saudi, whereas the overall prevalence of leukoplakia was 1.9%. The other lesions were leukoedema 8.3%, nicotinic stomatitis 2.5%, and lichen planus 0.6%. Except for lichen planus, all the lesions were almost exclusively found in men with a close relationship to oral tobacco habits. Leukoedema, nicotinic

Shedding oral mucosa.

Four patients presented with asymptomatic gray-white oral mucosal tissues that sloughed and peeled away leaving a normal tissue base. This peeling phenomenon appeared unlike any known oral mucosal disease, although it somewhat resembled leukoedema and chemically irritated oral mucosa due to certain dentifrices and mouthwashes. Examination of biopsy tissue from three of the four cases along with stripped tissue from the fourth case revealed an intraepithelial cleft near the surface of each specimen. The linear cleft ran parallel to the epithelial surface. Foci of adjacent cells displayed intrac

Giant centrifugal miliaria profunda.

A 4-month-old developed rapidly enlarging, white plaques up to several centimeters in diameter in areas where occlusive tape had been applied, almost all on the sites of venous or arterial punctures. Microscopy demonstrated the features of miliaria profunda, with sweat duct occlusion and evidence of extravasation of sweat into the dermis. This clinical entity has not been described previously, and we suggest the name giant centrifugal miliaria profunda.

Abnormal keratohyalin-like forms in leukoedema.

Electron microscopic, histochemical and light-microscopic studies were carried out on biopsy specimens of 12 cases of leukoedema and on the desquamated epithelial cells of a further 50 examples. For comparison, similar observations were made of 4 examples of healthy cheek mucosa and 29 cases of a variety of pathological conditions of the oral mucosa. Only in leukoedema were a series of structures encountered which consisted of an aggregation of ribosomes and electron dense masses, or a network of electron-dense material, or an electron-dense network with a central dense core or a solid body wi

High incidence of extrahepatic manifestations in an HCV hyperendemic area.

We previously investigated the incidence of extrahepatic manifestations including oral precancerous disease among the inhabitants in a hepatitis C virus (HCV) hyperendemic area in Fukuoka in Japan. The present study design was based on a prospective cohort at the other HCV hyperendemic area. One oral surgeon examined the oral lesions of 59 adult inhabitants (21 men, 38 women; mean age of 70.7 years), of a hyperendemic area of HCV infection. Furthermore, all subjects were interviewed regarding the natural history of extrahepatic manifestations. All sera were examined for antibodies to HCV (anti

Association between cigarette smoking and prevalence of oral mucosal lesions among Malaysian army personnel.

The association between cigarette smoking and the prevalence of oral mucosal lesions was examined in 495 Malaysian army personnel. No associations between cigarette smoking and recurrent aphthous ulcerations, pre-leukoplakia and frictional keratosis could be obtained in this study. Positive associations were found between cigarette smoking and leukoedema as well as denture stomatitis. There was a negative association between cigarette smoking and the presence of coated tongue.
