Synthesis of alkyl levulinates via the esterification of levulinic acid and transesterification of methyl levulinate with alkyl alcohols over montmorillonite K10.

Alkyl levulinates are bio-based chemicals with great potential for application in the fields of energy and fine chemical synthesis. They are synthesized via the esterification of levulinic acid with the corresponding alkyl alcohols over Brønsted acid catalysts. Here, three types of commercially available, low-cost, and environmentally friendly layered clay minerals (montmorillonite K10, halloysite, and kaolinite) were applied to the esterification of levulinic acid with ethanol as heterogeneous Brønsted acid catalysts. This is because of their surface hydroxyl groups, which can function as Brø

Catalytic conversion of cellulose to levulinic acid by metal chlorides.

The catalytic performance of various metal chlorides in the conversion of cellulose to levulinic acid in liquid water at high temperatures was investigated. The effects of reaction parameters on the yield of levulinic acid were also explored. The results showed that alkali and alkaline earth metal chlorides were not effective in conversion of cellulose, while transition metal chlorides, especially CrCl(3), FeCl(3) and CuCl(2) and a group IIIA metal chloride (AlCl(3)), exhibited high catalytic activity. The catalytic performance was correlated with the acidity of the reaction system due to the

Delta-amino-levulinic acid dehydratase gene and essential tremor.

BACKGROUND: Several reports found a relationship between increased serum lead levels and the risk for essential tremor (ET), especially in carriers of the minor allele of the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs1800435 in the aminolevulinate dehydratase (ALAD) gene, which is involved in the synthesis of haem groups. Our group reported decreased risk for ET in carriers of the minor alleles of the rs2071746 and rs1051308 SNPs in the haem-oxygenases 1 and 2 (HMOX1 and HMOX2), respectively, involved in haem metabolism. We analysed whether ALAD rs1800435 alone and their interactions with the fou

Unlocking the Molecular-Level Solvent Effect on Cellulose Hydrolysis to Levulinic Acid.

Biorefining cellulose, a major constituent of agricultural residue cell walls, into high-value chemicals improves agriculture's economic and environmental performance. Solvents play a crucial role in determining the selectivity and yield of cellulose hydrolysis products, yet the underlying mechanism of this control remains elusive. This study integrates calculational chemistry and experimental data to elucidate at the molecular level the specific roles of solvent molecules in cellulose hydrolysis. In the composite solvent γ-valerolactone/water, a cellulose conversion of 95.0% and a levulinic a

Photothermal Catalysis of Cellulose to Prepare Levulinic Acid-Rich Bio-Oil.

As a carbon-neutral and renewable raw material, cellulose can be transformed into biomass fuels to reduce the dependence on fossil fuels and carbon dioxide emissions. In view of harsh reaction conditions, low selectivity of product, and easy deactivation of the catalyst, this study studied the use of photothermal catalytic technology to convert cellulose into bio-oil rich in levulinic acid. It was discovered that a synergistic effect between heating and photocatalysis is present in cellulose degradation. Different metals were loaded on carbon nanotubes doped with titanium dioxide to prepare di

Kinetics study of levulinic acid production from corncobs by tin tetrachloride as catalyst.

Levulinic acid (LA) is an ideal platform chemical that can be produced through acid-catalyzed dehydration and hydrolysis of hexose sugars obtained from lignocellulosic materials. In this study, SnCl4 was identified as an efficient catalyst for LA production and the reaction kinetics was investigated in a single water phase under different reaction conditions. The Box-Behnken design response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to determine the optimized reaction conditions and three individual variables including reaction temperature, duration, and catalyst concentration were evaluated. An ap

Decoding Solvent Effects in Electrocatalytic Biomass Valorization: Levulinic Acid to γ‑Valerolactone.

Electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) of biomass-derived levulinic acid (LA) offers a sustainable route to prepare γ-valerolactone (GVL), a versatile green solvent and fuel additive. Yet despite its promise, most studies overlook the decisive role of the solvent environment, conflating conversion with true product yield. Here we disentangle these effects by systematically probing LA reduction over GC, Cu, Ni, and CuNi cathodes in three contrasting solvents (MeOH, DMSO, IPA) at two temperatures (15 and 35 °C). A clear design rule emerges: the solvents dictate the conversion ceiling, while temper

Utilizing environment-friendly eugenol as a diluent with trioctylamine for the reactive extraction of aqueous levulinic acid.

This paper focuses on the reactive extraction of levulinic acid (LA) from aqueous solution by reactive extraction. This goal is achieved using eugenol, a green alternative in the industry, as a solvent in the liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE) measurements for the ternary system of LA + Eugenol + H2O and quaternary systems of LA + Eugenol/ Methanol (MeOH) + H2O + Tri-n-octylamine (TOA) at T = 293.15 K. Additionally, the distribution coefficients (KD) were calculated for LA using the two diluents. Also, the ability of different diluents with TOA, in the extraction of LA were compared. The distribu

Comparison of physical enhancement technologies in the skin permeation of methyl amino levulinic acid (mALA).

Physical drug delivery enhancement in skin has been shown to enhance cosmeceutical actives efficacy. Among the physical drug delivery enhancement technologies, microneedle is the most commercially successful technology. However, there are pros and cons like other physical enhancement technologies including variabilities in penetration depth and lack of efficacy. In this study, three physical topical dug delivery enhancements, elongated microparticles, microneedles and dermaroller, were applied to ex vivo pig skin and compared. The model topical drug that was used is 5-Aminolevulinic acid, the

Theoretical comparison of fructose with methylglucoside for the production of formate and levulinate catalyzed by Brønsted acids in a methanol solution.

For the conversion of fructose/methylglucoside (MG) into both methyl formate (MF) and methyl levulinate (MLev), the C-source of formate [HCOO]- remains unclear at the molecular level. Herein, reaction mechanisms catalyzed by [CH3OH2]+ in a methanol solution were theoretically investigated at the PBE0/6-311++G(d,p) level. For the conversion of fructose into MF and MLev, the formate [HCOO]- comes from the C1-atom of fructose, in which the rate-determining step lies in the reaction of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) with CH3OH to yield MF and MLev. The reaction of fructose with CH3OH kinetically te

Adsorption of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural, Levulinic Acid, Formic Acid, and Glucose Using Polymeric Resins Modified with Different Functional Groups.

5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) is a promising high value-added platform chemical, which can be produced from glucose, fructose, or lignocellulosic biomass via catalysis technology. However, the effective separation of 5-HMF from aqueous solution and actual biomass hydrolysate is still challenging because 5-HMF can be further rehydrated into levulinic acid (LA) and formic acid (FA) under acidic conditions. Herein, the adsorption behavior of glucose and 5-HMF and its follow-up products (LA and FA) from aqueous solutions onto polymeric adsorbents modified with various functional groups (XAD-4, X

The Role of the Hydrogen Source on the Selective Production of γ-Valerolactone and 2-Methyltetrahydrofuran from Levulinic Acid.

A mechanistic study of the hydrogenation reaction of levulinic acid (LA) to 2-methyltetrahydrofuyran (MTHF) was performed using three different solvents under reactive H2 and inert N2 atmospheres. Under the applied reaction conditions, catalytic transfer hydrogenation and hydrogenation with molecular H2 were effective at producing high yields of γ-valerolactone. However, the conversion of this stable intermediate to MTHF required the combination of both hydrogen sources (the solvent and the H2 atmosphere) to achieve good yields. The reaction system with 2-propanol as solvent and Ni-Cu/Al2 O3 a

Catalytic hydrogenation of levulinic acid to γ-valerolactone over lignin-metal coordinated carbon nanospheres in water.

The hydrogenation of levulinic acid (LA) to γ-valerolactone (GVL) has attracted much attention, as GVL can be used as biofuel, green solvent, and platform chemical. Inspired by Stöber method, various lignin-metal coordinated colloidal nanospheres (LCS) from lignin and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) were synthesized in which the metal ions (Co2+) replace formaldehyde as the crosslinker. The characterization of the catalyst revealed that alkali lignin was first self-assembled with CTAB through electrostatic attraction to form a lignin polymer, the subsequent addition of metal ions (Co2+)

Improved levulinic acid production from agri-residue biomass in biphasic solvent system through synergistic catalytic effect of acid and products.

In this study, levulinic acid (LA) was produced from rice straw biomass in co-solvent biphasic reactor system consisting of hydrochloric acid and dichloromethane organic solvent. The modified protocol achieved a 15% wt LA yield through the synergistic effect of acid and acidic products (auto-catalysis) and the designed system allowed facile recovery of LA to the organic phase. Further purification of the resulting extractant was achieved through traditional column chromatography, which yielded a high purity LA product while recovering ∼85% wt. Upon charcoal treatment of the resultant fraction

From Levulinic Acid to Imines: Creating Biobased, Recyclable, Cross-linked Rubbers through Covalent Adaptive Networks.

Dynamic covalent bonds provide a powerful tool to design recyclable rubber-based materials. Among possible strategies, imine chemistry offers a valuable approach for achieving an adaptive network. In this work, for the first time, the use of biobased ketones and amines as cross-linkers in a rubber network is used. Specifically, epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) was cross-linked with glycerol trilevulinate (GT) and hexamethylene diamine (HMDA) to produce a fully biobased and recyclable hybrid network based on imine and hydrogen bonds. Comprehensive characterization confirmed the formation of a hy

Analysis of the response mechanism in lipid degradation of key gene LDH1 knockout strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae under levulinic acid stress.

Levulinic acid (LA) is the main toxic by-product in the production of fuel ethanol, and its large-scale emission adversely affect the ecological environment. In order to effectively remove LA from the liquid waste, microbial degradation methods are adopted but the challenge is that microorganisms cannot fully tolerate LA in the waste. Therefore, it is particularly important to explore the tolerance mechanism of microorganisms to LA. In this study, the whole-genome knockout library scanning and sensitive knockout strain identification were carried out. In addition, subcellular structures such a

On the Development of Phenol-Formaldehyde Resins Using a New Type of Lignin Extracted from Pine Wood with a Levulinic-Acid Based Solvent.

Resole resins have many applications, especially for foam production. However, the use of phenol, a key ingredient in resoles, has serious environmental and economic disadvantages. In this work, lignin extracted from pine wood using a "green" solvent, levulinic acid, was used to partially replace the non-sustainable phenol. The physicochemical properties of this novel resin were compared with resins composed of different types of commercial lignins. All resins were optimized to keep their free formaldehyde content below 1 wt%, by carefully adjusting the pH of the mixture. Substitution of pheno
