Licensed practical nurses' experiences of incivility while working in acute care settings: A scoping study.

Workplace incivility toward registered nurses is well documented, yet the experiences of licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and equivalent roles in acute care settings remain understudied, despite their essential contributions to the nursing workforce. This scoping study examined published literature on workplace incivility experienced by LPNs in acute care and identified gaps in the evidence. Studies were included if they focused on LPNs (or similar roles such as licensed vocational nurses, enrolled nurses, or second-level nurses), employed in an acute care hospital, reported at least one incid

Reflections by licensed practical nurses and nursing assistants on the violent behaviours of individuals receiving mental health care in an adult acute psychiatric ward: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Violence in adult acute psychiatric wards remains a significant occupational hazard for nursing staff, particularly Enrolled Nurses (equivalent to Licensed Practical Nurses) and nursing assistants who often provide direct patient care without specialized psychiatric training. Exposure to patient-perpetrated violence has serious emotional and professional consequences. This study explored and described the reflections of Licensed Practical Nurses and Nursing Assistants on the violent behaviours of individuals receiving mental health care in adult acute psychiatric wards. METHODS: A

Team Triage Intervention, Including Licensed Practical Nurse, to Increase HIV Testing Rates in the Emergency Department: A Quality Improvement Project.

INTRODUCTION: Emergency departments have an important role in screening for human immunodeficiency virus infection and reducing the morbidity, mortality, and transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus. There are debates about human immunodeficiency virus screening, including opt-in, opt-out, and active choice models. Previous studies have shown that multiple factors affect the patient rate of acceptance, including where, when, and by whom the screening is offered. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to test a team-based triage intervention to improve the amount of HIV tes

Psychological Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Licensed Full-Time Practicing Nurses Undertaking Part-Time Studies in Higher Education: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Frontline nurses face an unpreceded situation with the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, and many report suffering from physical and psychological stress. This online, cross-sectional survey used questionnaires, such as the Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) questionnaire, the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-2), the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, stress-related questions, and Brief Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced (Brief-COPE), to determine the psychological impact of COVID-19 on licensed full-time practicing nurses undertaking part-time studies in higher education. Initiation of physical restraint in nursing home residents following restraint reduction efforts.

In this pilot study a one group pretest posttest design was employed to identify resident characteristics and environmental factors associated with initiation of physical restraint. Predictors of restraint initiation for older adults were examined using secondary analysis of an existing data set of nursing home residents who were subjected to a federal mandate and significant restraint reduction efforts. Lower cognitive status (OR = 1.5 [for every 7-point decrease in Mini-Mental State Examination], 95% CI = 1.0, 2.1) and a higher ratio of licensed nursing personnel (OR = 3.7, 95% CI = 1.2, 11.

Practice nurse chlamydia testing in Australian general practice: a qualitative study of benefits, barriers and facilitators.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia infection is a significant public health issue for young people; however, testing rates in Australian general practice are low. Practice nurses (PNs) could have an important role in contributing to increasing chlamydia testing rates. The Australian Chlamydia Control Effectiveness Pilot (ACCEPt), a large cluster randomised control trial of annual testing for 16 to 29 year olds in general practice, is the first to investigate the role of PNs in maximising testing rates. In order to assess the scope for PN involvement, we aimed to explore PN's views in relation to involvemen

Agency staff utilization in nursing homes: patterns and concerns.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The persistent shortage of direct care workers across the long-term services and supports system has worsened since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. This shortage resulted in nursing homes (NHs) relying more heavily on agency staff to maintain a stable workforce. This study examines patterns of agency staff utilization and associated concerns reported by NH administrators. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Data from the 2023 Ohio Biennial Survey of Long-Term Care Facilities were used to report utilization patterns and concerns related to the use of agency-provided cert

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to explore nurses' perspectives on deprescribing in LTC and identify supports that may improve their involvement. METHODS: In this qualitative descriptive study, progressive group discussions were conducted with 32 nurses at two LTC care facilities in Edmonton, Canada. Participants include

Difference in work-related violence by nurse license type.

Nurses are at considerable risk for work-related violence. This study compared the experiences of work-related violence among registered nurses (RNs) and licensed practical nurses (LPNs) to quantify differences in risks and exposures and to gain insight into possible interventions. A random sample (n = 6,300) of licensed Minnesota nurses was surveyed regarding the previous 12-month period. Nurses self-reported violent events and demographic information. After adjustment for potential confounders and nonresponse, LPNs had an increased risk for both physical assault (odds ratio = 1.4; 95% confid

A 2025 Update: The Authority for Certain Clinical Tasks Performed by Assistive Personnel in the Care of Patients in Hemodialysis and Home Dialysis Settings.

As staffing shortages and ongoing cost-containment measures continue to challenge organizations, the use of assistive personnel (AP) for patient care activities increases. Emphasis on safe and effective care delivery remains crucial when RNs delegate certain tasks and aspects of patient care. The principles of delegation according to American Nurses Association and the National Council of State Boards of Nursing include the responsibility and accountability of the registered nurse (RN) for patient care outcomes. Authority for delegation of clinical tasks in the chronic hemodialysis setting and

Health care providers' knowledge assessment of measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine.

The aim of this study was to assess educational needs of health care personnel in vaccine storage and handling. The Immunization Knowledge Assessment Tool (IKAT) was used to evaluate knowledge related to delivery and storage of measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine among health care personnel in Idaho. Using descriptive analysis, only 61% of respondents achieved a passing score of 80%. Knowledge deficits were revealed among health care personnel, physicians, and other providers in immunization administration and handling of the MMR vaccine. Scores were highest among registered nurses, licen

Unlocking Prevalence Data: Describing the Job Stress and Well-being of U.S. Correctional Nurses.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the health and well-being of U.S. correctional nurses. To protect correctional nurses, a better understanding of organizational characteristics, job stress, and well-being must be undertaken. METHOD: A cross-sectional design was used in the form of an online survey. Correctional nurses were conveniently recruited using national listservs and snowball sampling. Variables were measured with the Health & Safety Executive Management Standards Indicator Tool, Nurse Wellbeing Index, and the Perceived Stress Scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and
