EMLA cream anaesthesia for frenuloplasty.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the use of a eutectic mixture of local anaesthetics (EMLA) cream as the sole anaesthetic for frenuloplasty. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifteen patients (mean age 25.6 years, range 19-41) were given topical EMLA cream 30 min before frenuloplasty; a Tegaderm dressing was applied to keep the anaesthetic in place. The level of anaesthesia was assessed on arrival in theatre using pin-prick testing and the patients were asked to grade their level of pain during the procedure using a visual analogue scale. If the level of anaesthesia was inadequate for the operation to be performed

Local anaesthetic drugs: adverse effects as reported through the ADROIT system in the UK.

PURPOSE: Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) to local anaesthetic drugs are reported voluntarily through the Adverse Drug Reporting On Line Tracking system (ADROIT). We aimed to determine hazards associated with drugs commonly used in anaesthesia including ropivacaine and levobupivacaine. METHODS: The ADROIT database was queried for all ADRs to local anaesthetics used in anaesthesia and surgery between 1967 and 2005. Details of age, sex, suspect drug, date and reaction details were analysed. RESULTS: There were 985 reports analysed, 797 for lidocaine, 160 for bupivacaine, 16 for ropivacaine and 12

Use of eutectic mixture of local anesthetics in children.

The Eutectic Mixture of Local Anesthetics (EMLA) is a topical application, which has proved to be a useful medication for providing pain relief among children. It is an emulsion containing a 1:1 mixture of lidocaine and prilocaine. The high concentration of the uncharged anesthetic base in the microdroplets of the emulsion ensure effective skin penetration. In the pediatric population EMLA has been shown to be efficacious when it is used prior to venipuncture, cannulation, lumbar puncture, laser treatment of port wine stains, curettage of molluscum contagiosum or vaccination. For several of th

Eutectic lidocaine/prilocaine cream. A review of the topical anaesthetic/analgesic efficacy of a eutectic mixture of local anaesthetics (EMLA).

Eutectic lidocaine/prilocaine cream 5% is a eutectic mixture of the local anaesthetics lidocaine (lignocaine) 25 mg/g and prilocaine 25 mg/g that provides dermal anaesthesia/analgesia following topical application. The principal indication in which eutectic lidocaine/prilocaine cream has been studied is the management of pain associated with venipuncture or intravenous cannulation, where significantly greater pain relief than placebo, with equivalent efficacy to ethyl chloride spray and lidocaine infiltration, has been demonstrated. In dermatological surgery, eutectic lidocaine/prilocaine crea

Preparation and stability testing of a hydrogel for topical analgesia.

With the commercial availability of a cream (EMLA) containing a eutectic mixture of local anaesthetics, 2.5% (w/w) lidocaine and 2.5% (w/w) prilocaine, effective topical anaesthesia of the intact skin is possible without the need for subcutaneous injections or exposure to high concentrations of local anaesthetics. In our hospital a topical anaesthetic product was designed for the same purpose. The home-made product contains a eutectic mixture of a local anaesthetic (5% w/w) and l-menthol (1% w/w). Prilocaine was used as the local anaesthetic because it is known for its safety and its well inve

Use of Emla prior to circumcision.

There are insufficient data to support the use of Emla cream for circumcision in newborn infants at this time. There are no studies that adequately address safety or efficacy. Before efficacy studies can be evaluated, pharmacodynamic studies need to be completed. These studies are in progress and are closed (personal communication, Vivian Broach BSPharm, Astra Pharmaceutical Product Information Service, Astra Pharmaceutical, Westborough, MA, June 8, 1995). Subsequent studies should be performed within the first 72 hours of birth and assess the following parameters: (1) serum concentrations of

Eutectic mixture of local anesthetic cream--topical anesthesia for extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy.

A 44-year-old man presented with a history of sudden onset left flank pain, accompanied by nausea and microhematuria. The diagnosis of ureteropelvic junction calculus was made and the patient was scheduled for extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL). ESWL uses an electrical spark to generate a shock wave that is focused on a stone in the ureter or kidney. The shock waves mechanically stress and crush the stone, eliminating the need for manipulation or open procedure. The pain of ESWL is caused by skin sensation. Eutectic mixture of local anesthetics (EMLA) cream (2.5% lidocaine and 2.5% p

Dermal effects and pharmacokinetic evaluation of the lidocaine/prilocaine cream in healthy Chinese volunteers.

BACKGROUND: EMLA cream is a local anesthetic. The pharmacokinetics and dermal effects of a topical anesthetic formulation has not been evaluated in healthy Chinese volunteers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Pharmacokinetics of the lidocaine/prilocaine test (T) or reference (R, EMLA) cream were evaluated in a fasting, single-dose, two-period crossover bioequivalent study conducted in 40 healthy Chinese volunteers. Meanwhile, the dermal effects including blanching, erythema, temperature sensation, edema, and skin rash were also evaluated during the study. RESULTS: After applied 15 g of the cream f

Evaluation of eutectic lidocaine/prilocaine cream for jugular blood sampling in cats.

OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a eutectic lidocaine/prilocaine cream (EMLA cream; Astra Pharmaceuticals) in reducing pain and reaction to venepuncture during jugular blood sampling in cats after a 30-min topical application time. METHODS: The study was a prospective, blind, controlled clinical trial. Eighteen healthy client-owned cats were randomly allocated to two study groups. All cats were clipped on the left jugular groove region and then, depending on the study group, either the placebo (liquid paraffin) or EMLA cream was applied to the region. The area was then

Lidocaine/prilocaine spray for premature ejaculation.

Although premature ejaculation is the most common ejaculation problem, it is poorly understood and currently has no standard definition.1 Typically, it involves reduced time to ejaculation, inability to control or delay ejaculation and associated distress.1-5 Treatments that have been assessed include psychosexual counselling, antidepressants (e.g. selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), phosphodiesterase type-5 inhibitors, tramadol and topical anaesthetic agents (e.g. lidocaine/prilocaine cream). A new formulation (cutaneous spray) of lidocaine/prilocaine (Fortacin-Plethora Solutions Ltd.)

[Methaemoglobinaemia in a child treated with Emla(®) cream: circumstances and consequences of overdose].

BACKGROUND: Emla(®) cream, a mixture of two local anaesthetics (prilocaine 2.5%, lidocaine 2.5%) has a good benefit-risk profile. However, methaemoglobinaemia can occur, especially when the cream is applied in excessive amounts or over long periods. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The authors report a case of seizure and respiratory disturbances (MetHb=20.1%) after excessive application of Emla(®) (30g) for curettage of molluscum contagiosum in a young girl with eczema. The patient's clinical condition improved after withdrawal of the cream and administration of methylene blue, and she returned home on

Plasma fibroblast skin tightening treatment resulting in bilateral chemical eye injury secondary to EMLA cream: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Plasma fibroblast skin tightening treatment is a relatively novel and growing minimally invasive aesthetic skin procedure. The treatment claims to rejuvenate skin by improving facial lines, wrinkles and skin pigmentation associated with photo-ageing. The skin is often anaesthetised prior to the procedure with topical creams such as EMLA (Eutectic mixture of local anaesthetics). We present the first case of bilateral chemical eye injury following plasma fibroblast skin tightening treatment secondary to EMLA cream. EMLA cream was inadvertently administered to both eyes in preparation

Coolsense® versus EMLA® for peripheral venous cannulation in adult volunteers: A randomised crossover trial.

Peripheral venous cannulation (PVC) is a commonly performed invasive medical procedure. Topical treatments such as the eutectic mixture of local anaesthetics (EMLA®, Aspen Pharmacare Australia Pty Ltd, St Leonards, NSW) attenuate the associated pain, but are limited by requiring up to one hour of application before becoming effective. The Coolsense® (Coolsense Medical Ltd., Tel Aviv, Israel) pain numbing applicator is a new device using a cryoanalgesic means to anaesthetise skin within seconds. Coolsense is being increasingly used for cannulation, but comparative studies are lacking. We recrui
