Voice stress evaluators and lie detection.

Proponents of vocal stress analysis systems argue that they are able to detect spoken deception by analysis of "stress" in the voice signal. Presumably, they do so by examining traces made by laryngeal microtremors which, they claim exist in the voice, are associated with stress, and ultimately are associated with lying. However, most research that seeks to identify the relationships between microtremors and laryngeal function has produced negative results, and data on the ability of voice analyzers to detect stress from speech--or to identify spoken deception--have been negative or "mixed" in

Transcranial Current Stimulation of the Temporoparietal Junction Improves Lie Detection.

The ability to detect deception is of vital importance in human society, playing a crucial role in communication, cooperation, and trade between societies, businesses, and individuals. However, numerous studies have shown, remarkably consistently, that we are only slightly above chance when it comes to detecting deception. Here we investigate whether inconsistency between one's own opinion and the stated opinion of another impairs judgment of the veracity of that statement, in the same way that one's own mental, affective, and action states, when inconsistent, can interfere with representation

Hypnotically induced belief in lies: impacts on microexpressions during deception and implications for lie detection.

This study aimed to investigate whether microexpressions differ between lying (when believing the lie is true) and truth-telling, and to explore the feasibility of lie detection using microexpression changes. A 2×3 within-subjects design was adopted, with 30 college students screened for high hypnotic susceptibility via the Harvard Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility (HGSHS-A; scores 9-12). Participants told real and hypnotically induced false stories across three states: waking state 1, hypnotic state (with belief in the lie), and waking state 2. Facial microexpressions were coded using th

Privacy-Preserving Approach for Early Detection of Long-Lie Incidents: A Pilot Study with Healthy Subjects.

(1) Background: Detecting long-lie incidents-where individuals remain immobile after a fall-is essential for timely intervention and preventing severe health consequences. However, most existing systems focus only on fall detection, neglect post-fall monitoring, and raise privacy concerns, especially in real-time, non-invasive applications; (2) Methods: This study proposes a lightweight, privacy-preserving, long-lie detection system utilizing thermal imaging and a soft-voting ensemble classifier. A low-resolution thermal camera captured simulated falls and activities of daily living (ADL) perf

Cognitive Load as a Key to Lie Detection: A Psycholinguistic Exploration of Pause and Hesitation in True and Fabricated Narratives.

This study investigates the role of pauses and hesitations as crucial non-verbal cues in deception detection, emphasizing the influence of cognitive load, as framed by the theoretical framework established by Memon et al. (2003). By examining cognitive indicators such as filled and silent pauses, repetitions, slips of the tongue, word omissions, speech rearrangements, sentence incompletions, and drawl, this research sheds light on the mental processes underlying language production in deceptive communication. Utilizing a comprehensive experimental design, we collected narratives from 30 native

Brain Fingerprinting and Lie Detection: A Study of Dynamic Functional Connectivity Patterns of Deception Using EEG Phase Synchrony Analysis.

This study investigated the brain functional connectivity (FC) patterns related to lie detection (LD) tasks with the purpose of analyzing the underlying cognitive processes and mechanisms in deception. Using the guilty knowledge test protocol, 30 subjects were divided randomly into guilty and innocent groups, and their electroencephalogram (EEG) signals were recorded on 32 electrodes. Phase synchrony of EEG was analyzed between different brain regions. A few-trials-based relative phase synchrony (FTRPS) measure was proposed to avoid the false synchronization that occurs due to volume conductio

Psychophysiological indexes in the detection of deception: A systematic review.

Robust evidence on deception detection highlights that humans perform at chance level, especially when a truth-default cognitive threshold is crossed by the deceiver. This systematic review examined whether identification of deceptive stimuli elicits specific physiological responses in the detectors of deception. Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, five databases were searched for human studies that evaluate physiological reactivity to deceptive stimuli, along with behavioural responses. Eleven studies (thirteen experiments) were in

Possible Sources of the Difference in the Severity of the Prior Information Effect on Polygraph Scoring Found in Three Published Studies.

The present article compares three CQT polygraph studies (Elaad et al., 1994; Ginton, 2019; Krapohl & Dutton, 2018), each indicating a different degree of the prior information effect in triggering confirmation bias while scoring polygraph examinations. The comparison led to the conclusion that the sample of the examiners who did the scoring in Krapohl and Dutton's study (2018) was a better representative of the examiners' population; however, the robust effect found in it is somewhat questionable since an unspecified part of it could be attributed to uncontrolled contamination of a conformity

Brain mapping of deception and truth telling about an ecologically valid situation: functional MR imaging and polygraph investigation--initial experience.

PURPOSE: To examine the neural correlates during deception and truth telling by using a functional magnetic resonance (MR) imaging technique and an ecologically valid task and to compare the results with those of a standard polygraph examination. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All subjects gave written informed consent for this HIPAA-approved study, which was approved by the institutional review board of Drexel University. Eleven healthy subjects (five female and six male subjects; mean age, 28.9 years) were randomly assigned to the group of guilty subjects or the group of nonguilty subjects. Each gr

Introducing the high-context communication style interview protocol to detect deception in pairs.

In four experiments, we examined whether pairs of truth tellers could be distinguished from pairs of lie tellers by taking advantage of the fact that only pairs of truth tellers can refer to shared events by using brief expressions (high-context communication style). In Experiments 1 and 2, pairs of friends and pairs of strangers pretending to be friends answered (i) questions they likely had expected to be asked (e.g., 'How did you first meet'?) and (ii) unexpected questions (e.g., 'First, describe a shared event in a few words. Then elaborate on it'). Pairs were interviewed individually (Exp

Clinical and conceptual problems in the attribution of malingering in forensic evaluations.

The authors review clinical and conceptual errors that contribute to false attributions of malingering in forensic evaluations. Unlike the mental disorders, malingering is not defined by a set of (relatively) enduring symptoms or traits; rather, it is an intentional, externally motivated, and context-specific form of behavior. Despite this general knowledge, attributions of malingering are often made by using assessment tools that may detect feigning but cannot be relied upon to determine incentive and volition or consciousness (defining characteristics of malingering). In addition, forensic e

Evaluating eye-tracking as a method for deception detection against the polygraph as deployed in practice.

Can credibility assessment be based on methods more reliable than those currently used? Traditional polygraph examinations, although widely employed, have well-documented limitations, motivating the search for alternative, noninvasive approaches. In this study, we developed an eye-tracking-based method to detect concealed memory traces by analyzing patterns of eye movements during a Concealed Information Test. Unlike previous research that examined eye movements in isolation, we directly compared the performance of the eye-tracking method with polygraph measurements within the same participant

Periorbital thermal signal extraction and applications.

We propose a novel method that localizes the thermal footprint of the facial and ophthalmic arterial-venous complexes in the periorbital area. This footprint is used to extract the mean thermal signal over time (periorbital signal), which is a correlate of the blood supply to the ocular muscle. Previous work demonstrated that the periorbital signal is associated to autonomic responses and it changes significantly upon the onset of instantaneous stress. The present method enables accurate and consistent extraction of this signal. It aims to replace the heuristic segmentation approach that has b

Effect of a question theme on differential responding in the Concealed Information Test: Comparison of knowledgeable versus unknowledgeable contexts.

The autonomic-based Concealed Information Test (CIT) focuses on differential responses to a crime-relevant item that is significant only for knowledgeable persons. This study examined whether pre-test instructions on question themes defining knowledgeable and unknowledgeable contexts modulate the magnitude of differential responses to the relevant item. The participants (36 men 46 women) were instructed to steal one item from one of two possible locations in a mock theft task. In the subsequent CIT, an identical set of items was presented under two different contextual conditions, and particip

Cognitive and emotional reactions to questions in the Comparison Question Test.

The effect of situational factors on perceptions of items on the polygraph Comparison Question Test (CQT) was assessed. In an initial experiment, 86 students (30 men, 56 women; M age = 20.3 yr., SD = 4.0) imagined one of eight scenarios that varied by guilt or innocence, the commission of a real crime or mock crime, and interrogation by a police officer or a professor. They then rated generic CQT questions for importance and emotional concern. All participants rated crime-relevant questions as being more important than past-crime comparison questions. "Guilty" participants also rated these que

Unraveling the Misconception About Deception and Nervous Behavior.

In this article, we attempt to unravel the misconception about deception and nervous behavior. First we will cite research demonstrating that observers believe lie tellers display more nervous behaviors than truth tellers; that observers pay attention to nervous behaviors when they attempt to detect deception; and that lie tellers actually feel more nervous than truth tellers. This is all in alignment with a lie detection approach based on spotting nervous behaviors. We then will argue that the next, vital, step is missing: Research has found that lie tellers generally do not display more than

Multimodal machine learning for deception detection using behavioral and physiological data.

Deception detection is crucial in domains like national security, privacy, judiciary, and courtroom trials. Differentiating truth from lies is inherently challenging due to many complex, diversified behavioural, physiological and cognitive aspects. Traditional lie detector tests (polygraphs) have been widely used but remain controversial due to scientific, ethical, and practical concerns. With advancements in machine learning, deception detection can be automated. However, existing secondary datasets are limited-they are small, unimodal, and predominantly based on non-Indian populations. To ad
