Drawing on stress and life-course perspectives and using panel data from 1,286 south Florida young adults, we assess three critical questions regarding the role of marijuana in the "gateway hypothesis." First, does teen marijuana use independently (causally) affect subsequent use of more dangerous substances? Second, if so, does that effect apply to the abuse of other illicit substances, as defined by the DSM-IV, or only to the use of such substances? Finally, does any causal effect of teen marijuana use survive beyond adolescence, or is it a short-term effect that subsides as adolescents tran

This is the second article of a two part series about utilizing the life course perspective (LCP) in genetic counseling. Secondary data analysis was conducted on a grounded theory, longitudinal study which provided a wide focus on living with hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) risk. The aim of this analysis was to explore the longitudinal data for both the temporal and social context of living with BRCA mutation genetic test results. Sixteen women from two previous studies were interviewed on multiple occasions over an 8 year time period. The LCP was used to direct a thematic analysis

This is the first article in a two part series about utilizing the life course perspective (LCP) in genetic counseling. LCP can be a useful tool for genetic counselors when counseling people with a known genetic mutation. Previous theories such as Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) and Common Sense Model of Self-Regulation (CSMSR) examine current reactions to a positive genetic test result. LCP extends beyond the current time to explore temporal and contextual elements of the experience. A review of research revealed, LCP has been used to study the perspective of caregivers of people with Alzh

Background/Objectives: Childhood obesity represents a major global health challenge. Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) remain an important modifiable dietary exposure; however, adolescent beverage behavior is often examined independently of dietary patterns established earlier in life. This narrative review examines SSB consumption and adiposity across the life course, particularly during the first 1000 days as a sensitive period for developing dietary habits. Methods: Targeted literature searches were conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science (January 2021-13 August 2026). We prioritized

Current American policies and responses to juvenile sex offending have been criticized for being based on myths, misconceptions, and unsubstantiated claims. In spite of the criticism, no organizing framework has been proposed to guide policy development with respect to the prevention of juvenile sex offending. This article proposes a developmental life course (DLC) criminology perspective to investigate the origins, development, and termination of sex offending among youth. It also provides a review of the current state of knowledge regarding various parameters characterizing the development o

OBJECTIVE: To examine the prevalence of depressive symptoms in mid-pregnancy and their relation to life circumstances across the life course in a community-based sample.
METHODS: The Pregnancy Outcomes and Community Health (POUCH) Study enrolled women at 16-26 weeks' gestation from 52 clinics in five Michigan communities. At enrollment women completed a screening instrument for depressive symptoms (CES-D) and questions about life circumstances covering three "periods," i.e. previous 6 months, adulthood, and childhood. Questions were grouped into sub-constructs (e.g., abuse, economic, substanc

PURPOSE: This commentary examines the complex maternal health landscape in rural America, highlighting the structural barriers to effective chronic disease management. We provide recommendations to center chronic disease management using a life course approach.
CONCLUSIONS: Women in rural areas face significantly higher maternal mortality and morbidity rates than their urban counterparts, largely due to a disproportionate burden of chronic disease conditions such as gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, cardiomyopathy, and mental health disorders. These disparities are deeply rooted in the uneq

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Ambient air pollution is strongly linked to cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. We summarize available published evidence regarding similar associations with diabetes across the life course.
RECENT FINDINGS: We performed a life-course survey of the recent literature, including prenatal, gestational, childhood/adolescence, and adult exposures to air pollution. Oxidative stress is identified as a key factor in both metabolic dysfunction and the effects of air pollution exposure, especially from fossil fuel combustion products, providing a plausible mechanism for air poll

Despite extensive research on the impact of fertility behaviors on mid-late-life health, conclusions remain inconsistent, and understanding is limited regarding the role of fertility-correlated life events in this causality. This study uses the 2018 wave and life-history information of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) dataset to explore how the number of children born (NCB) and age at first birth (AFB) influence later-life health. It also examines the effects of early-life educational attainment and mid-late-life caregiving on later-life health from a life-course per

Previous research has indicated that intersex people face specific challenges in their sexual development, including uncertainties or confusion about their gender, a negative genital self-image, and hesitance to engage in romantic and sexual relationships. However, in-depth knowledge regarding a central period in this development, adolescence, is missing. In our qualitative study, we explore which factors influence the relational and sexual development of intersex youth and what elements contribute to positive development. We interviewed eighteen intersex persons aged 18-38. We identified thre

The life-history narratives of 10 Mexican American men with mobility limitations, age 55-77 years (mean = 63.8, SD = 5.8), were explored using a qualitatively driven, life-history mixed-methods study to understand perceptions of mobility limitations over the life course. Within that methodological and paradigmatic framework, conceptualizations of alterity and masculinity guided interpretation of data. Through an iterative, thematic analysis, we detail the way the men's lives were influenced by growing familial responsibility with age. Quantitative data were integrated into themes of narrative

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Research has yet to seek a more complete understanding of how people aging with intellectual disabilities experience their social relations, and how their earlier life experiences impact the development of their social relations. This study investigated the experiences of older adults with intellectual disabilities with their social relations from a life course perspective.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A process of paired recruitment generated a sample of 12 adults with intellectual disabilities aged 50 and over with at least one key support person each. Data collec

BACKGROUND: A small number of cross-sectional studies have found that financial insecurity-a social determinant of health-is associated with lower urinary tract symptoms.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine (1) whether women in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adult Study with higher levels of financial strain, assessed at 7 time points across 25 years beginning in 1985-1986, were more likely to report lower urinary tract symptoms and impact after the 2010-2011 financial strain assessment and (2) whether healthcare access and comorbidities mediated potential associations.

PURPOSE: The growing burden of non-communicable diseases in ageing populations demands urgent public health attention. Hypertension and diabetes, as chronic conditions, frequently co-exist and pose serious public health challenges due to their contribution to cardiovascular morbidity, premature mortality and escalating healthcare costs. METHODS: This study uses Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI, 2017-18), a nationally representative survey using a rigorous multi-stage sampling design across rural and urban areas. Of the 73,396 individuals surveyed, 66,606 were aged 45 years and above. A

INTRODUCTION: Gambling disorder (GD) is characterized by persistent gambling behavior associated with significant distress and functional impairment. Pathways to GD reflect a complex interplay of individual, environmental, and experiential factors. United States (U.S.) veterans are considered particularly vulnerable due to heightened exposure to trauma and cumulative life stressors. In a qualitative study examining barriers to treatment among veterans, participants described various risk factors contributing to GD, prompting a secondary analysis to better identify the unique risk factors shapi

AIM: The present study investigated the way in which people who had experienced medically defined obesity understood and explained the causes of the weight gains they had experienced during their life course and related such explanations to gender and social background.
METHOD: The study was a qualitative in-depth interview study of 20 Danish middle-aged women and men with high and low levels of education who had experienced obesity.
RESULTS: Women mainly related weight gain to life-course transitions associated with the female biological lifecycle; to changes in social relations; or to pers

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5; aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 μm) is a leading contributor to the global burden of disease and is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. However, its health effects are often evaluated within single-exposure frameworks, limiting causal inference and reducing the translational relevance of evidence for policy development. In this study, we reconceptualise PM2.5 within the exposome framework by integrating external exposures, internal biological responses, and structural determinants of health across the life course. PM2.5 comprises a complex and dynamic
