Survival test of submersible life support systems.

An experiment to validate predictions concerning submersible survivability was performed in December, 1975, by members of the Canadian Forces in the CF Submersible Lockout Vehicle SDL-1 in Halifax Harbour in water of 4 degrees C temperature at a depth of 40 ft. Data was collected relevant to the life support equipment to determine if it would operate for a simulated 6-h mission followed by a 24-h immobility period, at the end of which rescue was presumed to have occurred. Physiological data was collected from the submersible occupants in order to assess the degree of thermal stress experienced

Basic life support and systems saving lives.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To describe recent science in basic life support (BLS) after cardiac arrest and how evolving knowledge in resuscitation is changing current guidelines and practices. RECENT FINDINGS: The core elements of BLS have remained mostly unchanged since 2005 when Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation recommendations were changed from 2 ventilations to 15 compressions and up to three stacked shocks for shockable rhythms, to 30 compressions to 2 ventilations and single shocks. Since 2010, basic life support has largely focused on the importance of providing high-quality CPR for professional a

Extracorporeal life support systems: alternative vs. conventional circuits.

Emerging technologies and practices for pediatric and neonatal extracorporeal life support (ECLS) are promising. This experiment sought to compare the Medtronic 0800 silicon rubber membrane oxygenator to the Quadrox-iD Pediatric oxygenator in the conventional roller pump circuit, as well as comparing the conventional circuit to an alternative circuit. Three circuits were set up in the experiment. Two conventional roller pump circuits were used to compare the two oxygenators and an alternative circuit consisting of the Quadrox-iD Pediatric oxygenator and Maquet Rotaflow centrifugal pump system

Current devices for pediatric extracorporeal life support and mechanical circulatory support systems in the United States.

Extracorporeal life support (ECLS) and mechanical circulatory support (MCS) have become indispensable treatment tools for pediatric patients with congenital heart defects undergoing peri-operative or end-stage heart and/or lung failure. ECLS and MCS can serve as bridges to recovery, transplantation (heart or lung), destination therapy, or "bridge to bridge" long-term MCS. Dependent on patient condition, venoarterial ECMO (V-A ECMO) for heart and lung support, venovenous ECMO (V-V ECMO) for respiratory support, and MCS for uni- and biventricular support can be selected properly. Considering sma

Integrating resource utilization and bioregenerative life support systems for sustainable space exploration.

The long-term presence of humans in space depends on reducing reliance on Earth's resupply of materials and resources. In situ resource utilization (ISRU) represents a sustainable approach to support human activities in space by converting local materials into consumables, propellants, and structural feedstocks. In parallel, bioregenerative life support systems (BLSS) primarily sustain internal loop closure (LC) by regenerating air, H2O, nutrients, and food from habitat-contained streams. Traditional ISRU concepts have primarily focused on abiotic technologies that process rocks, regolith, and

Novel multi-functional life support system.

UNLABELLED: Concepts of cardiopulmonary support (CPS), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and ventricular support (VS) have been thoroughly studied and refined. These perfusion adjuncts often require multiple devices, skill sets, and significant financial burden to purchase, maintain, deploy, and use. We describe a novel system that is rapidly deployable, user-friendly, portable, safe, and economical. Over a 1-year period we have used a multi-functional life support system (MLS) in the cardiac catheterization laboratory, cardiovascular intensive care unit, and cardiac surgical suites.

Components of aircraft life support systems interact with each other and the user.

The life support system in a tactical aircraft provides necessary supplemental oxygen to the aircrew. However, interactions among its various components may generate unexpected breathing loads. We focus here on the interactions between a regulator and breathing mask commonly used together in the U.S. Navy, the CRU-103 regulator and MBU 23/P mask, and some effects of the interactions on the user. The data reported were collected during a larger research effort examining potential physiological and cognitive effects of low regulator inlet pressures. Seventeen participants completed a series of t

Plant and microbial science and technology as cornerstones to Bioregenerative Life Support Systems in space.

Long-term human space exploration missions require environmental control and closed Life Support Systems (LSS) capable of producing and recycling resources, thus fulfilling all the essential metabolic needs for human survival in harsh space environments, both during travel and on orbital/planetary stations. This will become increasingly necessary as missions reach farther away from Earth, thereby limiting the technical and economic feasibility of resupplying resources from Earth. Further incorporation of biological elements into state-of-the-art (mostly abiotic) LSS, leading to bioregenerative

Precision nutrition and food biomanufacturing for space missions: Toward intelligent and bioregenerative life-support systems.

Long-duration spaceflight presents unique physiological and nutritional challenges due to factors such as microgravity, radiation, confinement, and circadian rhythm disruption. These stressors reshape energy metabolism, bone and muscle homeostasis, immune responses, and gut microbiota composition, leading to impaired nutrient absorption and oxidative imbalance. Conventional Earth-based dietary models are inadequate to address such complex interactions, highlighting the need for precise nutritional strategies combined with sustainable in-situ food production systems. This review examines recent

Complications of extracorporeal life support systems using heparin-bound surfaces. The risk of intracardiac clot formation.

Extracorporeal life support with heparin-coated extracorporeal membrane oxygenation circuits are being used with increased frequency in patients who have cardiogenic shock. We report our experience in 30 patients with cardiogenic shock, looking specifically at the complications associated with this form of life support. Thirty patients with a mean age of 46.5 +/- 16.6 years received extracorporeal life support for a mean of 62.8 +/- 41.1 hours (range 0.5 to 159 hours). Twenty-three patients had postcardiotomy cardiogenic shock, five had acute myocardial infarction, and one each had acute cardi

[Physiological and ecological characteristics of Azolla pinnata and its possible use in biological life support systems].

The principal physiological and ecological characteristics of Azolla pinnata were investigated in order to determine its potential use in biological life support systems. Plant requirements for biogenic elements were specified in order to develop balanced nutrient mixtures for continuous cultivation. Data on the growth and development, photosynthetic and nitrogen fixation rate, and biochemical composition of the plant were obtained for optimal cultivation conditions. The plant biomass contains large quantities of carotenoids and sulfur-containing amino acids, which are deficient in unicellular

Evaluation of two fiber optic-based solar collection and distribution systems for advanced space life support.

Growing plants in an enclosed controlled environment is crucial in developing bioregenerative life-support systems (BLSS) for space applications. The major challenge currently facing a BLSS is the extensive use of highly energy-intensive electric light sources, which leads to substantial energy wastes through heat dissipations by these lamps. An alternative lighting strategy is the use of a solar irradiance collection, transmission, and distribution system (SICTDS). Two types of fiber optic-based SICTDS, a Fresnel-lens Himawari and a parabolic-mirror optical waveguide (OW) lighting system, wer

A Clinical Decision Support System for the Prediction of Quality of Life in ALS.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Motor Neuron Disease (MND), is a rare and fatal neurodegenerative disease. As ALS is currently incurable, the aim of the treatment is mainly to alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life (QoL). We designed a prototype Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) to alert clinicians when a person with ALS is experiencing low QoL in order to inform and personalise the support they receive. Explainability is important for the success of a CDSS and its acceptance by healthcare professionals. The aim of this work isto announce our prototype (C-ALS),

The Type A belief system: relationships to hostility, social support, and life stress.

Certain core beliefs may underlie the Type A behavior pattern, predisposing individuals to health problems and impaired interpersonal relationships. Previous studies have revealed that the Type A Cognitive Questionnaire (TACQ), a self-report measure reflecting these beliefs, is indeed related to emotional distress. The current study assessed the TACQ's relationship to aspects of the interpersonal environment, including perceived social support and stressful events. It also investigated the TACQ's relationship to subtypes of hostility (ie, cynicism and paranoid alienation). Subjects were 111 co

Bridging the Gap: A Scoping Review of Clinical Decision Support Systems in End-of-Life Care for Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: Clinical decision support (CDS) systems have been widely adopted in health care to enhance decision making, but opportunities to refine their application in end-of-life (EOL) care for older adults remain. Despite the potential of CDS tools to facilitate timely hospice referrals and improve palliative care planning, challenges such as eligibility complexities, late referrals, and integration into clinical workflows persist. This scoping review maps the current landscape of CDS systems in EOL care, identifies key system types, and examines their effectiveness in guiding clinical deci

[Ethical aspects in the context of extracorporeal life support systems (ECLS): consensus paper of the DGK, DGTHG and DGAI].

Extracorporeal life support systems (ECLS) are life-sustaining measures for severe cardiovascular diseases, serving as bridging treatment either until cardiovascular function is restored or alternative treatment, such as heart transplantation or the implantation of permanent ventricular assist devices is performed. Given the insufficient evidence and frequent urgency of implantation without initial patient consent, the ethical challenges and psychological burden for patients, relatives and the interprofessional intensive care team are significant. As with any treatment, an appropriate therapeu

Design of a modular controlled unit for the study of bioprocesses: Towards solutions for Bioregenerative Life Support Systems in space.

Space exploration beyond the Low Earth Orbit requires the establishment of Bioregenerative Life Support Systems (BLSSs), which, through bioprocesses for primary resource recycling, ensure crew survival. However, the introduction of new organisms in confined space habitats must be carefully evaluated in advance to avoid unforeseen events that could compromise the mission. In this work, we have designed and built an experimental chamber, named Growing/Rearing Module (GRM), completely isolated and equipped with micro-environmental monitoring and control systems. This unit is specially intended fo

A novel technique to establish hemodynamic monitoring in patients supported with extracorporeal life support systems (ECLS) for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR).

PURPOSE: Veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) is increasingly used to support conventional unsuccessful resuscitation and it is mandatory to rapidly initiate invasive hemodynamic monitoring, as soon as ECPR therapy is commenced. Commonly, this is achieved by establishing an additional arterial line via the right radial artery for invasive blood pressure measurement, but this can be challenging and risky on the one hand and might lead to erroneous measurements on the other hand. Therefore, a faster, easier, safer and more valid method for hemodynamic monitoring is pressin
