[Oto-mandibular ligaments: disco-mallear and malleo-mandibular ligaments].

Phylogenesis, embryology and anatomy are emphasizing that two ligaments are found between the temporo-mandibular joint and the middle ear. These two oto-mandibular ligaments are named the disco-mallear ligament and the malleo-mandibular ligament. Originating from the first arch, these ligaments are not involved in the otologic manifestations of the temporo-mandibular joint syndrome. The disco-mallear ligament is a brake applied to the anterior excursion of the disc. When this disco-mallear ligament is stretched the disc can be displaced anteriorly breeding disc displacement, hypermobility and

Lumbar intrathecal ligaments.

A meticulous examination was performed on 56 vertebral columns from cadavers between 64 and 89 years of age. Identification of all contents within the dural sac was completed; however, the main focus was the cauda equina and lumbar region. In addition to scope dissection, radiographs and histological preparations were used to identify structures, tissue types, and any possible pathology. Discrete intrathecal ligamentous bands were observed in all cadavers examined. They were found randomly binding the dorsal nerve roots of the cauda equina to the dura. Occasional binding of the ventral nerve r

MRI of wrist ligaments.

The optimal imaging protocols for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the wrist ligaments are discussed, including the use of magnetic resonance arthrography, and 3 Tesla (T) versus 1.5 T magnetic field strength. The normal MRI appearance of the triangular fibrocartilage complex, capsular, and interosseous wrist ligaments is briefly covered to point out potential diagnostic pitfalls. Numerous examples of common ligamentous pathology discernible on MRI are provided, along with the latest estimates of diagnostic sensitivity and specificity provided by the literature.

Wrist Ligaments Injuries and Instability.

Wrist instability is a challenging topic for radiologists due to the wrist's intricate ligamentous anatomy and complex kinematics. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the intrinsic and extrinsic wrist ligaments, their characteristic imaging appearance, and the pathomechanics and classification systems of carpal instability to enhance radiologists' ability with the diagnosis of wrist ligamentous pathologies. Furthermore, the evolving role of advanced imaging modalities, such as high-resolution MR, kinematic MRI, MR arthrography, 4DCT, CT arthrography, and dynamic imaging technique

Tendons and ligaments--an overview.

The structure, range of functions, blood supply, nerve supply, biochemical composition and development of tendons and ligaments are reviewed. The importance of their cells is often overlooked because of the obvious role of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in determining the physical properties of tendons and ligaments. However, it is emphasised that tendon and ligament cells have elaborate cell processes that form a three dimensional network extending throughout the extracellular matrix. The cells communicate with each other via gap junctions that could form the basis of an important load sensin

[Healing of ligaments and tendons].

Regeneration of ligaments and tendons is a slow process, compared with the healing of other connective tissues (e.g., bone). Healing starts from the surrounding soft tissues ("extrinsic healing"), but also from the ligament or tendon itself ("intrinsic healing"). Regeneration is poor when there is little surrounding soft tissue available, as is the case in the anterior cruciate ligament. Regeneration of the medial collateral ligament of the knee is examined best. Mechanical and ultrastructural properties are not completely normal even 1 year after dissection of the ligament irrespective of whe

Epididymal ligaments: anatomy and function.

Three ligaments are described in relation to the epididymis: superior and inferior epididymal, and vasal ligaments. The study was conducted on 38 cadavers and included direct dissection and histologic examination. The superior and inferior epididymal ligaments are triangular folds of the visceral tunica vaginalis, and extend from epididymis to testicle. The superior ligament binds the epididymal head to the testicle, protecting the fine efferent ductules from damage. The inferior ligament fixes body and tail and mesoepididymis; further, it prevents epididymal convolutions from unraveling. The

The ligaments of the wrist.

The ligaments of the wrist were studied by dissecting ten fixed and seven fresh frozen wrists. In three other specimens multiple cross-sections were prepared. These studies show that the wrist ligaments can be classified into two groups: extrinsic and intrinsic. In the extrinsic group, the deep volar radiocarpal ligaments are three strong and very important structures connecting the radius to the capitate, the radius to the lunate, and, in a deeper layer, the radius to both the scaphoid and the lunate. A ligamentous deficiency was noted frequently between the capitate and the lunate. There als

MR Imaging of Wrist Ligaments.

This article discusses the normal anatomy and pathologic appearances of the intrinsic and extrinsic wrist ligaments using MR Imaging. Technological advances in surface coil design and higher magnetic field strengths have improved radiologists' ability to consistently visualize these small ligaments in their entirety. Wrist ligament anatomy, in the context of proper physiologic function, is emphasized, including common normal variants, and their appearances on MR imaging. The spectrum of disorders, incorporating overlapping appearances of senescent degenerative changes, and destabilizing ligame

Material properties of periodontal ligaments.

The mechanism of orthodontic teeth movement is not entirely explained. The principal reaction on tissues at the cellular and molecular level is initiated by the force applied to the tooth crown and transferred in turn upon the periodontal ligament (PDL). It seems, therefore, that the PDL and particularly its properties play a key role in bone remodelling. One of the more commonly used methods, which is capable of analysis of a wide range of orthodontic movements or distribution of stress and strain within teeth and periodontium, is the finite element method (FEM). Aiming to achieve the FEM mod

Cleland's ligaments and Dupuytren's disease.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether Cleland's ligaments are affected by Dupuytren's disease and assess their contribution to the flexion contracture of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint. Twenty patients with Dupuytren's disease undergoing fasciectomy for a PIP joint contracture > 40° (mean 61°, range 45°-100°) were included. After excision of all other identifiable digital disease, Cleland's ligaments were assessed. If they appeared to be macroscopically affected by Dupuytren's disease they were excised, sent for histological analysis, and any further improvement of PIP joi

Are re-injured ligaments equivalent mechanically to injured ligaments: The role of re-injury severity?

The consequences of ligament re-injury have received limited attention. Although the mechanical properties of injured ligaments improve over time, these properties are never fully recaptured, rendering these injured ligaments susceptible to re-injury. Previous injury is a significant risk factor for recurrent injury, and this re-injury can result in longer absence from activity than the initial injury. A rabbit medial collateral ligament model was used to compare mechanically re-injured right medial collateral ligaments to injured left medial collateral ligaments. Two groups of different re-in

What Do We Know About Ligaments?

Ligaments have been extensively studied in anatomy and are traditionally defined as structures that connect bones and contribute to joint stability. However, a universally accepted definition of "ligament" remains elusive. Many structures classified as ligaments do not connect bones, such as the ligamentum arteriosum, raising questions about the criteria used for their designation. Moreover, distinguishing ligaments from tendons presents a significant challenge because of their shared histological characteristics and the lack of a clear, standardized definition of "ligament". Historically, lig

[Injuries to the lateral ankle ligaments].

Acute sprains and ruptures of the lateral ankle ligaments are the most common injuries of the ankle joint. They are often related to sporting activity and predominantly affect individuals under 40 years old. Lateral ligament injuries occur due to supination trauma. The anterior talofibular ligament is most commonly affected often in combination with the calcaneofibular ligament. In contrast, ruptures of all three lateral ankle ligaments (luxatio pedis supinatoria) or complete ruptures of the medial and lateral ligaments (luxatio pedis cum talo) are extremely rare. The clinical diagnostics have

Sub-SMAS Reconstruction of Retaining Ligaments.

BACKGROUND: Retaining ligaments must be fully released for effective soft-tissue mobilization during sub-superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) facelifts. Standard deep temporal fascia and lateral SMAS fixation techniques may fail earlier than anticipated, which may cause a relapse of facial aging signs. Reconstruction of retaining ligaments was previously proposed to enhance facelift fixation. OBJECTIVES: The author sought to assess the effect of their ligament reconstruction technique on early relapse rates and complication rates. METHODS: This study was a comparative analysis of 188

Percutaneous Ankle Reconstruction of Lateral Ligaments.

Chronic ankle instability following ankle sprains causes pain and functional problems such as recurrent giving way. Within the 3 ligaments of the lateral ligament complex, 80% of patients tear the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL), whereas the other 20% of patients tear the ATFL and calcaneofibular ligament (CFL). Rarely, the posterior talofibular ligament is involved. An incidence of 10% to 30% of patients will fail conservative treatment and result in chronic ankle instability that may require surgical treatment. To date, numerous open surgical procedures for anatomic repair or reconstruc
