LIGHT POLLUTION Artificial light can be a polluting agent deleterious for the retina, in relation to the toxicity of the blue band (380-500 nm) of the visible spectrum (380-700nm) specifically used in light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Photo-toxicity results from photochemical damage to the pigmented epithelium and retinal photoreceptors responsible for the visual function of the retina. Their photosensitive pigments, opsins for the cones and rhodopsin for the sticks, are consumed during the day and regenerated at night. Exposure to light at night seriously disrupts their metabolism. Photo-toxicity

Artificial light at night (ALAN) is a significant environmental factor with negative effects on human health. Technological advances have significantly altered light exposure patterns, reducing access to natural light during the day and increasing exposure to artificial light during the evening and night hours. ALAN disrupts the circadian rhythm, mainly by suppressing melatonin, leading to endocrine and metabolic disorders and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells, which modulate melatonin expression in response to light exposure, play

Mass introduction of lighting devices according to the concept of "maximum coverage area" and multistoried buildings of cities gave rise to light pollution, which became a problem for astronomers, ecologists and hygienists. Analysis of modern lighting devices and installations has shown that about 30-45% of the luminous flux becomes the light pollution. Night lighting of cities causes both direct and indirect damage to the environment, leads to unnecessary energy wastes. So in the USA due to excessive light there is wasted about 2 million barrels of oil per day. Light pollution affects the hum

At present, light pollution (exposure to light-at-night) both in the form of occupational exposure during night work and as a personal choice and life style, is experienced by numerous night-active members of our society. Disruption of the circadian rhythms induced by light pollution has been associated with cancer in humans. There are epidemiological evidences of increased breast and colon cancer risk in shift workers. An inhibition of the pineal gland function with exposure to the constant light (LL) regimen promoted carcinogenesis whereas the light deprivation inhibits the carcinogenesis. T

Light-sticks are used as bait in surface long-line fishing, to capture swordfish and other large pelagic predators. When discharged in the ocean, it may reach the beaches. The traditional Brazilian community of Costa dos Coqueiros, Bahia, use light-sticks as a medicine for rheumatism, vitiligo and mycoses. It may affect the marine life when its content leak in the open ocean. This work evaluated and identified the acute and chronic toxicity of the light-stick. A high acute toxicity was observed in the mobility/mortality of Artemia sp.; in the fertilization of sea urchin eggs, and a high chroni

Environmental light pollution adversely affects brain function, disturbing circadian rhythms and negatively impacting human health. Nanoplastics (NPs) pollution is pervasive in the human environment, and their minuscule size facilitates entry into the body, particularly invading brain and compromising its functionality. However, whether NPs infiltrate rhythm-regulated brain regions and disrupt circadian rhythms in organisms remains unclear. Our study demonstrates that exposure to NPs in mice perturbs normal circadian rhythms. Specifically, NPs invade the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), affectin

Understanding the causes and potential mitigations of light pollution requires measuring and monitoring artificial light at night (ALAN). We review how ALAN is measured, both from the ground and through remote sensing by satellites in Earth orbit. A variety of techniques are described, including single-channel photometers, all-sky cameras, and drones. Spectroscopic differences between light sources can be used to determine which are most responsible for light pollution, but they complicate the interpretation of photometric data. The variability of Earth's atmosphere leads to difficulty in comp

Mosquito breeding sites consist of water pools, which can either be large open areas or highly covered ponds with vegetation, thus with different light exposures combined with the presence in water of xenobiotics including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) generated by urban pollution. UV light and PAHs are abiotic factors known to both affect the mosquito insecticide resistance status. Nonetheless, their potential combined effects on the mosquito physiology have never been investigated. The present article aims at describing the effects of UV exposure alongside water contamination with

The increasing prevalence of artificial light at night (ALAN) is of growing ecological concern. By altering natural light regimes, ALAN affects the behaviour, physiology and life-history of organisms. While research has largely focused on terrestrial ecosystems, aquatic ecosystems are increasingly exposed. Here, we systematically review current knowledge of the impacts of ALAN on fishes and the underlying mechanisms and ecological consequences. We first discuss the factors influencing fish exposure to ALAN and how light can exert both direct and indirect effects. We then examine the potential

Emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) present global health threats, and their emergences are often linked to anthropogenic change. Artificial light at night (ALAN) is one form of anthropogenic change that spans beyond urban boundaries and may be relevant to EIDs through its influence on the behaviour and physiology of hosts and/or vectors. Although West Nile virus (WNV) emergence has been described as peri-urban, we hypothesized that exposure risk could also be influenced by ALAN in particular, which is testable by comparing the effects of ALAN on prevalence while controlling for other aspects

Light is the visible part of the electromagnetic radiation within a range of 380-780 nm; (400-700 on primates retina). In vertebrates, the retina is adapted to capturing light photons and transmitting this information to other structures in the central nervous system. In mammals, light acts directly on the retina to fulfill two important roles: (1) the visual function through rod and cone photoreceptor cells and (2) non-image forming tasks, such as the synchronization of circadian rhythms to a 24 h solar cycle, pineal melatonin suppression and pupil light reflexes. However, the excess of illum

At present, cancer is responsible for almost half of all deaths among women 45-64 years of age, and about 30% of all deaths among men in the same age group (1). This high rate represents a marked increase from the end of the last century (2), and it probably has a multifactorial etiology. Air pollution, smoking, diet, alcohol, occupational exposures and stress are all considered as possible etiologic and risk factors (3). We put forward a hypothesis that one of the most important etiologic factors in the rapid growth rate of cancer is the change of light exposure that took place in the last 10

Visible light refers to the frequencies within the electromagnetic spectrum that humans can see, encompassing radiation with wavelengths falling between 380 nm to 760 nm. The energy of a single photon increases with its frequency. In the retina, photoreceptor cells contain light-sensitive pigments that absorb light and convert it into electrical stimuli through a process known as phototransduction. However, since the absorption spectrum of photoreceptors closely aligns with blue light (ranging from 400 to 500 nm), exposure to high light intensities or continuous illumination can result in oxid

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of excessive light exposure during gestation on intrauterine development and early growth of neonates in rats.
METHODS: Pregnant rats were randomly allocated to three groups: the constant light exposure group, non-light exposure group and control group. Blood samples were collected from the tail vein to analyze melatonin and cortisol levels. Weight, daily food and water consumption were recorded. Uterine weight, placental weight and placental diameter were measured on gestational day 19. Natural birth and neonate growth were also monitored. The expression

The global increase in light pollution is being viewed with growing concern, as it has been reported to have negative effects ranging from the individual to the ecosystem level.Unlike movement on the ground, flying and swimming allows vertical motion. Here, we demonstrate that flight altitude change is crucial to the perception and susceptibility of artificial light at night of air-borne organisms. Because air-borne species can propagate through the airspace and easily across ecotones, effects might not be small-scale. Therefore, we propose including airspace as a vital habitat in the concept

OBJECTIVE: An increasing body of evidence suggests a relevant association between artificial light at night (ALAN) and adverse health effects. We evaluated the association between ALAN and health outcomes in children and adolescents.
METHODS: We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, EMBASE, and MEDLINE from January 1, 2020, to March 14, 2026, and included 72 observational studies from six continents, mostly conducted in Asia. The OHAT and GRADE assessed study quality and outcome certainty; meta-analysis was not performed due to high heterogeneity. ALAN exposure was measured by satellite im
