Lignin Phenol Formaldehyde Resoles Using Base-Catalysed Depolymerized Kraft Lignin.

Lignin phenol formaldehyde (LPF) resols were produced using depolymerized lignin fractions at various levels of phenol substitution (50 to 70 wt %). To produce monomeric-rich (BCD-oil) and oligomeric (BCD-oligomers) bio-based phenolic compounds, softwood kraft lignin was base-catalysed degraded. These base-catalysed depolymerized (BCD) building blocks were further used to substitute phenol in the synthesis of phenolic resins and were characterized in detail (such as viscosity, free formaldehyde and phenol content, chemical composition, curing and bonding behaviour). The adhesive properties wer

Thermosetting Polymers from Lignin Model Compounds and Depolymerized Lignins.

Lignin is the most abundant source of renewable ready-made aromatic chemicals for making sustainable polymers. However, the structural heterogeneity, high polydispersity, limited chemical functionality and solubility of most technical lignins makes them challenging to use in developing new bio-based polymers. Recently, greater focus has been given to developing polymers from low molecular weight lignin-based building blocks such as lignin monomers or lignin-derived bio-oils that can be obtained by chemical depolymerization of lignins. Lignin monomers or bio-oils have additional hydroxyl functi

Characterization of Lignin-Phenol-Formaldehyde Resins Synthesized with Different Lignin Sources.

The growing demand for sustainable adhesives has increased interest in lignin as a renewable alternative to phenol in PF resins. In this study, lignins from hardwood, softwood, and bamboo were evaluated as partial replacements for phenol in plywood and paper panel applications. Softwood lignin exhibited the highest molecular weight and guaiacyl-rich structure, hardwood lignin contained more syringyl units, and bamboo lignin presented notable p-hydroxyphenyl content with minimal ash and sulfur. Incorporating up to 50% lignin increased resin viscosity and markedly shortened gel time from 136-152

Wine-red lignin revisited, dirigent proteins, and native lignin macromolecular configuration.

The wine-red coloration of xylem in antisense cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase (CAD) down-regulated tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) has long been reported as due to wine-red colored lignin. To investigate validity of the wine-red lignin report, both wild type (WT) and anti-sense CAD down-regulated tobacco stem xylem tissues were examined, with the red pigment found to be facilely removed by treatment with an 0.5 % HCl in MeOH solution at 4 °C. The red pigment in the xylem tissues was rapidly reconstituted in both pre-treated antisense CAD and WT xylem tissues by incubation with sinapyl aldehyde in M

Thermal Polymerization of Softwood Kraft Lignin: Enhanced Adhesion of Lignin-Phenol-Formaldehyde Blends.

Thermal polymerization improved the adhesion properties of softwood kraft lignin, making polymerized softwood kraft lignin a viable and sustainable partial substitute for phenol-formaldehyde resins used in engineered wood panels. This was confirmed by the increased shear strengths observed after pressing hardwood veneers with either alkaline aqueous lignin solutions or their blends with commercial phenol-formaldehyde resins. Plywood panels bonded with blends of polymerized kraft lignin and phenol-formaldehyde resins exhibited higher wood failure values compared with those bonded with phenol-fo

All-Lignin Microspheres with Controllable Surface Charges Fabricated from Water-Soluble Quaternized Lignin.

Technical lignin offers a renewable aromatic platform for functional materials. However, its direct transformation into well-defined particulate adsorbents remains challenging owing to its poor aqueous processability and uncontrolled interfacial properties. In this study, kraft lignin (KL) is quaternized by introducing permanent quaternary ammonium groups, yielding a water-processable quaternized lignin (QL) with tunable cationic characteristics. Polymer matrix-free lignin microspheres are then fabricated by water-in-oil emulsion crosslinking using KL and QL as lignin building blocks. Compared

Formation of phenolic compounds from roasted sesame hull lignin: Impact of lignin structure.

The phenolic compounds generated from sesame hull lignin roasting contribute to sesame oil quality, yet their formation mechanism remains unclear. In this study, a thermal desorption unit with gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (TDU-GC-MS) was used to simulate the roasting of five lignins isolated from sesame hull: two types of milled wood lignin (MWL-1 and MWL-2), acetic acid lignin (AAL), alkali lignin (AL), and ethanol lignin (EL). The effect of lignin structure on phenolic product formation during roasting was investigated. UV-vis, FT-IR, and NMR showed that all five lignins w

Interlinking Lignin Molecules with Citric Acid: The Effect of Reaction Conditions on Lignin Properties.

To increase the molecular weight (MW) and glass transition temperature (Tg) of lignin, thereby improving manufacturing for applications such as polymer blends and carbon fibers, lignin is crosslinked with a renewable interlinking agent, citric acid, via esterification. MW and Tg of a kraft (BioChoice) lignin and an alkaline-pretreated hybrid poplar lignin (HPL) were increased by up to 7× (e.g., from 20 to 146 kDa) and up to 36 °C, respectively. Moderate decreases in polarity were obtained, as observed by the solubility of the esterified lignins in toluene and ethanol. Three reaction mechanisms

Lignin blending modulates laccase-catalyzed polymerization of lignosulfonates using organosolv lignin from vine shoots.

Laccase-catalyzed repolymerization of technical lignins is an emerging biocatalytic strategy for upgrading lignin streams into polymeric systems and biomaterial precursors under mild reaction conditions. Lignosulfonates are attractive substrates for enzymatic polymerization due to their high water-solubility; however, their relatively low reactivity can limit their application. In contrast, organosolv lignin typically presents low-molecular weight and high phenolic content, which increase its susceptibility to laccase-mediated oxidation; however, its limited water solubility restricts enzymati

Solvent-directed ozonolysis dismantles lignin heterogeneity: An integrated strategy for a tunable lignin biorefinery.

Impurities and the heterogeneous three-dimensional structure of alkali lignin complicate its valorization. In this study, technical alkali lignin from soda bagasse was ozonated in ethanol, tetrahydrofuran (THF), 1,4-dioxane, acetone, or methyl cellosolve to combine oxidative depolymerization with solvent fractionation. The comparison tested how solvent polarity and hydrogen-bonding behavior affect product distribution under otherwise fixed conditions. FTIR, GPC, and GC-MS showed differences among the five soluble fractions. Protic solvents retained more phenolic monomers and oligomers, whereas

One pot synthesis of furan-modified lignin from agricultural waste via lignin-first approach.

This study investigated a lignin-first approach to produce furan-modified lignin from sugarcane bagasse (SB), rice hull (RH), and sunn hemp biomass (SHB) using 5 methylfurfural (MF) and 5 methul-2-furanmethanol (MFM). The reaction time (5 h) was selected based on the delignification of SB using methanol and Ru/C catalyst which yielded the highest hydroxyl content. Delignification of SB with various MF weight ratios (1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 2:1, and 3:1) revealed that 1:1 and 2:1 ratios produced the highest hydroxyl content (7.7 mmol/g) and bio-oil yield (23.2 % wt% total weight). Advances of Modified Lignin as Substitute to Develop Lignin-Based Phenol-Formaldehyde Resin Adhesives.

Traditionally, phenols used to prepare phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin adhesives are obtained from phenolic compounds and various chemicals, which are extracted from petroleum-based raw materials. Lignin, a sustainable phenolic macromolecule in the cell wall of biomass with an aromatic ring and a phenolic hydroxyl group similar to those of phenol, can be an ideal substitute for phenol in PF resin adhesives. However, only a few lignin-based adhesives are produced on a large scale in industry, mainly because of the low activity of lignin. Preparing lignin-based PF resin adhesives with exceptional

Dielectric Characterization of Protonated Chitosan-Lignin Biocomposite Membranes: Influence of Chitosan and Lignin Types.

Biobased chitosan-lignin composite membranes with tailored dielectric and conductive properties were developed using chitosan of high (CSH) and low (CSL) molecular weight and degree of deacetylation, combined with kraft (KL) and organosolv lignin (OL) as fillers. The membranes were protonated by immersion in 1.0 M sulfuric acid. CSH composites exhibit stronger ionic interactions with sulfate groups compared to CSL composites, resulting in a dense structure that hinders water absorption and increases fragility. Chitosan interactions with sulfuric acid and lignin restrict the mobility of dielect

Structural features of dioxane lignin: A comparative study with milled wood and formaldehyde-stabilized lignins.

Dioxane lignin (DL) is isolated from plant material under mild acidolysis conditions and is widely used in many studies as a representative sample of protolignin, an alternative to milled wood lignin (MWL). However, the structural changes caused by hydrolytic degradation reactions during DL extraction are still poorly understood. In this work, an integrated approach based on 2D NMR and high-resolution mass spectrometry was used to establish the features of the lignin structure on the example of pine lignin isolated using dioxane under various conditions: MWL, DL and "formaldehyde stabilized" l
