INTRODUCTION: Altered lingual frenum modifies the normal tongue mobility, which may influence the stomatognathic functions, resulting in anatomical, physiological and social damage to the subject. It is necessary that health professionals are aware of the process of evaluation, diagnostics and treatment used today, guiding their intervention.
OBJECTIVE: To perform a systematic review of what are the treatment methods used in cases of lingual frenum alteration.
DATA SYNTHESIS: The literature searches were conducted in MEDLINE, LILACS, SciELO, Cochrane and IBECS, delimited by language (Portugu

Ankyloglossia is a developmental anomaly of the tongue characterized by a short, thick, lingual frenum resulting in limitation of tongue movement. The frenum is attached to the tip of the tongue in varying degrees. This study evaluates short lingual frenum and other associated pathologies (dentofacial anomalies and lingual dysglossia) and investigates whether ankyloglossia is related to speech problems. A thorough intraoral examination was carried out using the WHO regulations for dentofacial anomalies and occlusion problems and a new scale of lingual mobility. This article also discusses the

The health risks associated with aspiration and ingestion of foreign bodies in children are well known. The increased availability of magnetic toys have added to these risks. A 7-year-old girl presented at the Department of Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery at the University of Pretoria Oral and Dental Hospital with a complaint of pain under the tongue. Examination revealed that magnetic balls had been lodged on either side of the lingual frenum. The patient experienced pain and was unable to dislodge the magnets. This case report documents patient presentation and management and concludes with a

BACKGROUND: The lingual frenum is a fold of mucous membrane connecting the ventral tongue to the floor of the mouth. In general, lingual frenum serves multiple roles; its main function is to support the tongue and aid in limiting its movement in different directions. Any anatomical or functional deficiency of lingual frenum may have an impact on tongue functions based on its severity. Historically, the absence of lingual frenum was linked to multiple genetic and developmental conditions such as infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis, non-syndromic ankyloglossia diseases, and Ehlers-Danlos syn

We report on a boy with Rapp-Hodgkin syndrome (RHS) or Rapp-Hodgkin ectodermal dysplasia. He had sparse, wiry, slow growing and uncombable hair, but no pili torti or pili canaliculi characteristic of RHS. He also had sparse eyelashes and eyebrows, and obstructed lacrimal puncta and epiphora. Bilateral bony external auditory canal stenosis led to hearing loss. The mouth was small with repaired bilateral cleft lip and palate. Oral manifestations included hypodontia, microdontia, unerupted mandibular premolars with well formed roots, large dental pulp spaces, enamel hypoplasia, multiple caries, g

BACKGROUND: The orofacial musculature plays a pivotal role in maintaining a balance in positioning of the teeth and any imbalance which occurs in this , results in malocclusion. Lingual frenum is a soft tissue structure which tethers the ventral surface of the tongue to the floor of the mouth.
OBJECTIVE: This study was performed to analyze the lingual frenal lengths in skeletal class I, class II and Class III malocclusion and to correlate relationship between both.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study comprised of 30 subjects, with 10 in each group and an impression was made with the maximum mo

Despite the curious role of tongue in the development of oro-facial structures the tongue remains as rather quiescent organ without bony skeleton. But it is said that neuro-muscular complex of tongue is important in the developmental and functional process. Ankyloglossia and macroglossia are occasionally implicated in the oral diseases. Many authors supposed that the ankyloglossia and macroglossia might produce various abnormal oro-facial growth, such as bimaxillary or mandibular protrusion and anterior open bite, etc. We have designed the classification of ankyloglossia by measuring the media

Purpose: To assess the diagnostic criteria for restrictive lingual frenum and the association with feeding difficulties in mother-infant dyads. Methods: The protocol was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42024482618). Ovid MEDLINE, CINAHL, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were searched from 1946 to May 2025 for studies meeting inclusion criteria. The population included mother-infant dyads with or without feeding difficulties, where infants had a restrictive frenum. Outcomes measured included diagnostic accuracy of tools assessing ankyloglossia and the association of ankyloglossia with feedin

Ankyloglossia, also known as tongue-tie, is an embryological anatomical malformation of the tongue, characterized by an abnormally short and a thick lingual frenum. Tongue-tie restricts the physiologic movements of the tongue and results in various functional, behavioral and speech abnormalities along with the development of frontal and lateral lisps. Ankyloglossia in infants is also linked with the difficulty in breastfeeding difficulty, gagging, choking or vomiting food, delayed development or deterioration of speech and behavioral issues. A lingual frenectomy is a common oral surgical proce

Purpose: To provide evidence-based recommendations for managing infants with restrictive lingual frenum and breastfeeding difficulties. Methods: Recommendations were informed by 2 recent systematic reviews regarding outcomes such as the diagnostic criteria for ankyloglossia, association of ankyloglossia with feeding difficulties, and evidence for surgical release of the lingual frenum. The Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations (GRADE) approach guided consensus on problem prioritization, certainty of evidence, benefit-risk balance, patient values, acceptability, a

BACKGROUND: Ankyloglossia, commonly known as tongue tie, is a congenital condition wherein the lingual frenum is tethered to the floor of the mouth. The classification protocols traditionally used for the diagnosis of ankyloglossia that have been described in literature lack coherence in terms of their subjective nature and application across different age groups. The use of quantitative tools provides a means of assessing the lingual frenulum that is both reproducible as well as objective, improving the accuracy of diagnoses and reducing operator bias.
AIM: This systematic review aims to ide

This case report aimed to verify the effect of lingual frenectomy on the functional anatomical aspects of the tongue, the phonetic-acoustic characteristics, and the magnitude of tongue movement in the phonemes [ɾ] and [l] after the lingual frenectomy. The anatomical characteristics of the lingual frenum and the functional aspects of the tongue were evaluated using the Protocol for Evaluation of the Lingual Frenum. The phonetic-acoustic particularities of speech were assessed through formant analysis using PRAAT software, and the evaluation of the magnitude of tongue movements was conducted via

A congenital condition called ankyloglossia, or tongue tie, is characterized by an excessively short or tight lingual frenum that restricts the tongue's movement and flexibility. Although ankyloglossia, or tongue tie, is not a serious sign, it can cause a variety of challenges, such as difficulty with newborn feeding, speech problems, and many mechanical and social problems since there are restricted tongue movements, such as protrusion of the tongue. It is recommended to get a lingual frenectomy to treat ankyloglossia. A 24-year-old female patient reported to the Department of Periodontics wi
