Multinodular goiter in lingual thyroid is quite rare. Surgical removal is indicated in symptomatic patients and when cancer is suspected. An external approach is most often used, but is associated with morbidity and sequelae. In this study, we present for the first time the technique of transoral robotic surgery (TORS) for removal of a massive lingual goiter. Prospective patient data were collected, including demographics, medical history, symptoms, comorbidities and drugs prescribed. The da Vinci Surgical System was used for a transoral approach to the oropharynx. The technique was validated

INTRODUCTION: Lingual thyroid is a rare ectopic thyroid anomaly caused by the failure of thyroid descent during embryogenesis. It accounts for 90% of ectopic thyroid cases. Multinodular goiter (MNG) in a lingual thyroid is extremely rare, with only three cases previously reported.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old female presented with intermittent mouth bleeding, worsening dysphagia, and a foreign body sensation in the throat. Examination revealed a firm submental swelling and a vascular nodular mass at the tongue base with active bleeding. Imaging and Technetium-99m thyroid scan confirmed li

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Thyroid hemiagenesis (THA) is a very rare congenital anomaly defined by the underdevelopment or complete absence of one thyroid lobe. Similarly, ectopic thyroid tissue (ETT) is a rare condition where thyroid tissue is located outside its usual anatomical position, most often at the tongue base. The simultaneous occurrence of THA and ETT is extremely rare, as demonstrated in our case.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 30-year-old female presented with a long-standing history of anterior neck swelling. Ultrasound revealed right THA along with enlarged isthmus. Fine needle aspira

An 8-year-old girl with a lingual thyroid was evaluated because of a tumor at the base of the tongue. Ultrasound showed a hypoechogenic homogeneous parenchymatous structure at the base of the tongue consistent with thyroid tissue. Suboptimal levothyroxine treatment resulted in longstanding TSH stimulation causing a lingual goiter.

An ectopic thyroid located at the base of the tongue is a rare entity, resulting from early developmental defects of thyroid gland embryogenesis during its descent from the foramen caecum to its normal eutopic pretracheal site. This condition is the main cause of congenital primary hypothyroidism, even though signs and symptoms of thyroid dysfunction may also appear later in childhood. Lingual thyroid may sometimes present with symptoms of respiratory obstruction or feeding difficulties. We illustrate the case of a 7-year-old girl with subclinical hypothyroidism due to Hashimoto's thyroiditis

BACKGROUND: Only 1 case with dual thyroid ectopy and a normally located thyroid gland has been reported.
METHODS: We present the case of a 71-year-old woman who had 1-sided lateral neck swelling in the right submandibular space, which grew and doubled in size within 1 year. A CT scan demonstrated 2 right submandibular, lobulated, heterogeneously enhanced masses, an ectopic lingual thyroid, and bilateral thyroid goiter. A Tc-99m sodium pertechnetate thyroid scan revealed a cold area in the right lateral neck region below the submandibular gland, an ectopic lingual thyroid, and bilateral pretra

A 72-yr-old woman who had previously undergone partial thyroidectomy for "toxic goiter" and subhyoid gland resection presented with signs and symptoms of ectopic lingual thyroid at the base of the tongue. The combination of lingual subhyoid and pretracheal thyroid is a rarity with only three cases reported. Discovery of ectopic thyroid tissue should raise suspicion of other ectopic thyroid tissues along the path of embryologic migration from its origin to the porta hepatis. This may necessitate assessment of radionuclide uptake and imaging of numerous areas. Sodium levothyroxine is the mainsta

OBJECTIVE: We report an extremely rare case of thyroid hemiagenesis with ectopic lingual thyroid.
METHOD: Case report and review of the world literature concerning thyroid hemiagenesis with ectopic lingual thyroid and heredity.
RESULTS: Ectopic thyroid is an uncommon embryological aberration characterised by the presence of thyroid tissue in a site other than its usual, pretracheal location. The lingual thyroid is the most common manifestation of benign ectopic thyroid tissue, but is still a rare clinical entity. Thyroid hemiagenesis is also a very rare abnormality, in which one thyroid lobe

Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) can be due to an absent gland (athyrosis), an ectopic gland (usually lingual), or an inborn metabolic error (goiter). In this study, radionuclide scanning was compared with ultrasound (US) and serum thyroglobulin (Tg) concentration as a method of determining the cause of CH in 50 newborns. Mean serum Tg values were significantly lower in athyrotic children (7.9 pmol/L) than in either those with goitrous (149.1 pmol/L) or ectopic (60.5 pmol/L) glands, but there was marked overlap among all three groups. With the interpreter "blinded" to the radionuclide diagnosis,

Ectopic thyroid tissue is a rare developmental abnormality involving aberrant embryogenesis of the thyroid gland during passage from the primitive foregut to the pretracheal position. The most frequent position is the base of the tongue (lingual thyroid); however, it has been described in other sites, such as the submandibular region, trachea, mediastinum, and subdiaphragmatic regions. Here, we report a case of an adenomatous goiter that developed in mediastinal thyroid tissue without any connection to the pretracheal thyroid gland.

A Ectopic thyroid is any thyroid tissue not located in his normal anatomic situation. There have been described four general groups within the upper aerodigestive tract: lingual, sublingual, thyroglossal and intralaryngotracheal. Intralaryngotracheal thyroid tissue is rare and constitute 7 per cent of all intratracheal tumours, and it represents a problem of diagnosis and management. The controversy about the genesis of this tumours remains. There are two established theories: "the malformation theory" and "the ingrowth theory". These tumours affect more frequently adult female. The presence of simultaneous two ectopic foci of thyroid tissue (dual ectopic thyroid) is rare, and few cases have been reported in the literature. The ectopic thyroid tissue is an extremely uncommon embryological aberration due to the alterations occurring during the embryological development with incomplete migration of thyroid precursors. Commonly ectopic thyroid tissue is a midline structures, but the lateral location is possible but very rare. Ectopic thyroid is common in women and can vary in size from a microscopic focus to a few centimeters. The normal process of migration of the thyro

BACKGROUND: Ectopic thyroid is a rare developmental disorder, typically found in lingual areas, and most distantly in the abdomen. Thyroid ectopia in multiple regions is extremely rare. To date, there are no reports of ectopic goiter in four regions of the abdominal cavity in a single patient.
CASE SUMMARY: We present a case of thyroid ectopia in four areas of the abdomen, comprising normal orthotopic thyroid tissue. A 36-year-old woman, who underwent ovarian teratoma resection 10 years previously due to symptomatic ovarian teratoma, was referred to our hospital for treatment of an incidental

BACKGROUND: Ectopic thyroid is a rare disease. In the present study at the 9th People's Hospital in Shanghai, China, 42 patients' ectopic thyroid glands between the neck and maxillofacial region were subjected to a retrospective and transverse study based on data from 1978 to 2012 to explore the natural characteristics of ectopic thyroid.
METHODS: The patients' clinical data were collected. In addition, scintigraphy (Tc-99 m, Iodine-131), CT scan, histology and pathology were performed. The protein expression of thyroid transcription factor-1 (TTF-1), thyroglobulin (TG), calcitonin (CT), Ki-6

RATIONALE: Hematemesis is a common symptom of gastrointestinal disorders and is often associated with upper gastrointestinal issues. However, lingual thyroid, a rare ectopic thyroid condition, can also present with hematemesis, complicating diagnosis and increasing the risk of misdiagnosis. This paper reports a case of lingual thyroid in which the primary symptom was hematemesis.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 59-year-old male patient with dwarfism and congenital hypothyroidism underwent irregular thyroid hormone therapy. He was admitted to the hospital after experiencing hemoptysis and a sensation of a

We report a patient with the unusual coincidence of two rare congenital disorders, lingual ectopy of the thyroid gland and resistance to thyroid hormone (RTH), resulting in impaired thyroid hormone production and action, respectively. The proposita had a positive thyrotropin (TSH) newborn screening test (350 mU/L, confirmed) with normal thyroxine (T4) and no clinical signs of hypothyroidism. A scintiscan revealed lingual but no orthotopic thyroid tissue. Levothyroxine (LT4) replacement failed to reduce TSH and was discontinued after four months owing to significantly elevated free T4. OBJECTIVES: We developed a new approach of exposing the tongue base using frenuloplasty and mini-rakes (FMR) to resect lesions directly with microbipolar cautery. The purpose of this study is to review the patients who underwent this procedure at our center.
METHODS: A medical chart review was conducted from January 2011 to June 2023 looking for children under 18 years of age who had a base of tongue lesion resected using the FMR technique. Age at time of surgery, lesion type, intubation, number of days until eating, and length of hospital stay were recorded.
RESULTS: We identified 16 patien

Thyroid scintigraphy was performed in 69 consecutive infants with permanent primary congenital hypothyroidism (CH) detected by systematic neonatal thyroid screening using a rectilinear scanner or a gamma camera 15 minutes after the intravenous injection of 250 microCi Tc-99m sodium pertechnetate, immediately after the infants were fed. Immobilization of the infant in a supine position with the neck in hyperextension was achieved by a vacuum cushion without any sedation. Thyroid scintigraphy showed thyroid ectopia in 43 of the 69 CH infants, thyroid agenesis in 19, and goiter in the last 7 infa

OBJECTIVE: To describe a young woman with polycystic ovary syndrome and a lingual thyroid gland.
CLINICAL HISTORY: A 19-year old woman with secondary amenorrhea whose previous history had been uneventful. She had a normal spontaneous puberty with menarche at 13 years, followed by cyclical menstruations until six months before, when a period of four months of amenorrhea occurred. Physical exploration disclosed a normal young adult woman, without goiter, galactorrhea, acne, nor hirsutism. A pelvic ultrasound showed bilateral enlargement of the ovaries. Hormonal studies showed FSH 4 mUl/mL (nl =
