Lipoblastoma.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Lipoblastoma is a rare benign mesenchymal tumor of embryonal fat that occurs almost exclusively in infants and children. This study was done to determine the clinical and pathologic characteristics of lipoblastoma. METHODS: Nine cases of pathologically proven lipoblastoma from 1979 to 1997 were reviewed. There were 6 boys and 3 girls ranging in age from 3 months to 29 months. RESULTS: A soft tissue mass was the chief complaint in 7 patients, abdominal distension in 1 patient with a retroperitoneal mass, and defecation difficulty in 1 patient with a perirectal mass. In 4 p

Lipoblastoma of the extremities.

BACKGROUND: Lipoblastoma is a rare benign tumor of infancy and childhood, with similar radiographic imaging findings as malignant liposarcoma. Therefore, it is crucial to distinguish through other diagnostics and clinical features. We present our experience with the diagnosis and clinical management of this entity. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed to identify children treated for lipoblastoma at our institution over a 30-year period. Charts were evaluated for diagnostic methods, treatment, and recurrence risk. RESULTS: A total of 9 males and 3 females were identified. The

Lipoblastoma and lipoblastomatosis.

We report two cases of lipoblastoma of the buttock in a 10-month-old boy and a 20-month-old girl, the first with rearrangement of chromosome 8 and the second without cytogenetic abnormality, and one case of lipoblastomatosis of a leg in a 6-month-old boy with a normal karyotype but with a rearrangement of the PLAG1 gene. Lipoblastoma and lipoblastomatosis are two different presentation of the same rare benign soft tissue mesenchymal tumour arising from fetal white fat and occurring almost exclusively in young children under 3 years. These neoplasms have no malignant potential but may recur in

Lipoblastoma of the lip.

Lipoblastomas are benign tumors arising from embryonic white fatty cells that continue to proliferate and develop during the postnatal period. It commonly affects children 3 years of age or younger, with the neck being the most frequent site in the head and neck region. Only 10% of cases are seen at 10 years or above. The etiopathogenesis of lipoblastomas is linked to polysomy and rearrangement of chromosome 8q11-13 with or without the involvement of the pleomorphic adenoma gene 1 (PLAG1) gene. Here, we report one of the first cases of lipoblastoma of lip in a 10-year-old boy with atypical imm

Primary cardiac lipoblastoma.

Lipoblastoma is a benign adipose tumor in children that has been described in various anatomic locations, most commonly the extremities. We describe the case of a 17-month-old boy diagnosed with cardiac lipoblastoma, a previously unreported primary cardiac tumor in children. Our patient presented with symptoms of coughing, wheezing, and hoarseness and was found to have a large mediastinal mass, which narrowed the left mainstem bronchus and compressed the right atrium and superior vena cava, causing superior vena cava syndrome. Surgical exploration revealed an intrapericardial soft tissue mass

Mediastinal lipoblastoma in paediatrics.

OBJECTIVE: To describe two cases of mediastinal lipoblastoma, an infrequent and little-known patho logy, which is extremely rare in the mediastinum, with no cases reported in our country. CLINICAL CASES: Two case reports. Both patients were boys younger than three years, in which a mediastinal mass was found incidentally on a chest x-ray. The study was complemented with a CT scan and with a thoracoscopic biopsy in one of the cases. Complete resection of the tumor was achieved in both patients through thoracotomy. One of the patients presented Claude Bernard Horner syndrome as a complication f

An isolated digital lipoblastoma.

This report presents a girl with a lipoblastoma of a finger presenting as a macrodactyly. Documented inflammation of the digit at birth raises suspicion of neo-adipogenesis, which is recognised in lipomas. This case highlights a rare site for lipoblastomas and explores a potential aetiopathogenesis.

Congenital lipoblastoma of the scalp.

Lipoblastoma is a unique tumor of infancy and early childhood that can occur congenitally. It commonly occurs in trunk and extremities, but also rarely in head and neck. We have not encountered any report of congenital lipoblastoma of scalp in published literature. Here we describe the case of an infant who presented with a rapidly growing large scalp mass that measured 15 x 15 x 10 cm. At birth, the mass was located on the bregma but progressed to extend into the left upper eyelid and eyebrow. The mass was resected in two stages: the first stage consisted of resecting the scalp mass and the s

Metastatic lipoblastoma-like tumour.

INTRODUCTION: Lipoblastoma-like tumours (LLT) are uncommon and their biologic nature is not well-understood. Complete resection of the primary lesion is usually curative. This is the first reported case of metastatic LLT. CASE PRESENTATION AND MANAGEMENT: This patient originally had a large primary resected from the vulva. She subsequently developed tumours in multiple areas including her right pleura and lung. These were resected and pathology was consistent with LLT. On follow-up imaging, there was evidence of metastatic disease. CONCLUSION: The patient is currently undergoing detailed mol

Intrascrotal lipoblastoma in adulthood.

This case report describes the case of a 37-year-old man that noticed an intrascrotal right mass with 1 month of evolution. During physical exam presented with a large mass at the inferior portion of the right testicle, clearly separated from the testicle, with a tender consistency and mobile. An ultrasound was performed that showed a solid and subcutaneous nodular lesion, extra testicular, heterogeneous, measuring 7.2 cm. Pelvic magnetic resonance imageMRI showed a lesion compatible with a lipoma. The patient was subjected to surgical excision of the lesion by scrotal access, having histology

Contemporary management of lipoblastoma.

PURPOSE: Lipoblastoma is a rare, benign, adipose tissue tumor. We report the largest single institution experience managing these uncommon neoplasms. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 32 cases of lipoblastoma entered in the pathology database at our institution between January 1991 and August 2005. We conducted a comprehensive literature review of lipoblastoma and summarized the results of the largest series published. RESULTS: Most patients presented with an enlarging, palpable, firm, nontender, mobile mass. The male-to-female ratio was 1.9:1. The anatomical distribution was trunk (n = 1

Mediastinal lipoblastoma of infancy.

We report the case of a rapidly expanding mediastinal and chest wall lipoblastoma in an 11-month old infant. Clinical presentation was respiratory distress and chest radiographs revealed a large soft tissue mass in the anterior mediastinum without specific features. CT scanning demonstrated a mass of principally fat attenuation, with enhancing hyperdense soft tissue whorls, which had a compressive effect on normal intrathoracic structures. At surgery the tumour was removed without complication and histology demonstrated an encapsulated, well differentiated lipoblastoma.

Pediatric lipoblastoma of the neck.

BACKGROUND: Lipoblastoma is a rare, benign, and encapsulated tumor arising from embryonic white fat. Most of the cases occur in the extremities and the trunk; only a few cases in the head and the neck are reported. Thus, we present a case of lipoblastoma of the neck with a review of the literature. PATIENT AND METHOD: A 1-year-old male infant presented to our hospital, with a history of painless swelling in the left side of the neck for 3 months that was rapidly enlarged. His birth history and medical history were unremarkable. A physical examination demonstrated a soft and compressible mass

Multifocal lipoblastoma of the face.

Lipoblastoma is a rare benign neoplasm found exclusively in the pediatric population that can occur anywhere in the body, most commonly seen in the extremities but also found in the face. We report an 8-month-old female subject who presented with multifocal soft tissue masses of the face. The diagnosis of lipoblastoma was made in 2 separate locations after surgical resection. Subsequent surgery was performed at the cheek site in an attempt to remove further mass, resulting in discovery of 2 other discrete tumors found to be lipoblastomas. Although the literature reports recurrence rates rangin

Cervical lipoblastoma: An uncommon presentation.

Lipoblastoma is extremely rare and mainly occurs in children younger than 3 years old. It is predominantly found in the extremities and trunk. Head and neck region occurrences are rare; only 4 such cases involving patients who presented with stridor have been previously reported. We report the fifth case of lipoblastoma of the neck with stridor in a 9-year-old girl, which had gradually worsened over the previous year. Imaging showed a retrotracheal mass extending superiorly to the thyroid level and inferiorly to below the carina of the trachea. Total resection of the tumor was performed, and t

[Embryonal fatty tumors. Lipoblastoma-lipoblastomatosis].

The authors present four cases. The first case is a diaphragmatic-mediastinal, the second one is a cervical-mediastinal one, the third case has a buttock, the last one is a case of hip-thigh. Their ages are one, eight and three years old and the fourth case is seven days old. They appear in axilla, neck, thoracic wall and fat prevertebral tissue, in below three year old children. Despite their benignity, the tumors grow very fast. The complete extirpation is fundamental to avoid relapses, which are presented approximately in a 15 for 100 of the cases. Mutilations are not necessary, since it is
