[Interactive Microcomputer Method of Lipreading (MIMILLE): an interactive microcomputerized method of lipreading].

A computer-aided speechreading assessment and training system is presented. It is intended to be one component of a comprehensive aural rehabilitation program for preretirement adults with acquired mild-to-moderate hearing loss. Each lesson focuses on a different viseme which is practiced using the 'discourse tracking' method. The system allows the evaluation of the basic skills necessary for lipreading, i.e. good visual speech decoding and effective use of lingustic redundancy and transmitter feedback, by evaluating separately tracking rate, strategy, and types of errors.

Lipread-induced phonetic recalibration in dyslexia.

Auditory phoneme categories are less well-defined in developmental dyslexic readers than in fluent readers. Here, we examined whether poor recalibration of phonetic boundaries might be associated with this deficit. 22 adult dyslexic readers were compared with 22 fluent readers on a phoneme identification task and a task that measured phonetic recalibration by lipread speech (Bertelson, Vroomen, & De Gelder, 2003). In line with previous reports, we found that dyslexics were less categorical in the labeling of the speech sounds. The size of their phonetic recalibration effect, though, was compar

Metacognitive Awareness of Lipreading Gains in Young and Older Adults.

PURPOSE: When listening to speech in noise, lipreading can facilitate communication. However, beyond its objective benefits, individuals' perceptions of lipreading advantages may influence their motivation to use it in daily interactions. We investigated to what extent older and younger adults are metacognitively aware of lipreading benefits, focusing not only on performance improvements but also on changes in confidence and listening effort and on the internal evaluations (confidence and effort) that shape listening experiences and may influence strategy adoption. METHOD: Forty participants

Visual inputs decrease brain activity in frontal areas during silent lipreading.

AIM: The aim of the present work is to analyze the modulation of the brain activity within the areas involved in lipreading when an additional visual stimulus is included. METHODS: The experiment consisted of two fMRI runs (lipreading_only and lipreading+picture) where two conditions were considered in each one (oral speech sentences condition [OSS] and oral speech syllables condition [OSSY]). RESULTS: During lipreading-only, higher activity in the left middle temporal gyrus (MTG) was identified for OSS than OSSY; during lipreading+picture, apart from the left MTG, higher activity was also p

Living in a Limited World: Experience of Lipreaders When Society Is Masked.

The goal of the current interpretive phenomenological study grounded in Heidegger's philosophies was to explore the experience of lipreaders when society was masked during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Participants were prelingually deafened English-speaking adults who predominantly relied on lip-reading and speaking for communication. Twelve in-depth email interviews were conducted with respondents recruited via social media. Thematic techniques of Benner were employed, and six themes emerged: Limiting of World Resulting in Negative Emotions, Increased Prominence of Deafness, Balanci

Audiovisual integration and lipreading abilities of older adults with normal and impaired hearing.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the current study was to examine how age-related hearing impairment affects lipreading and auditory-visual integration. The working hypothesis for the investigation was that presbycusic hearing loss would increase reliance on visual speech information, resulting in better lipreading and auditory-visual integration in older persons who have hearing impairment, compared with older persons who have normal hearing. DESIGN: This study compared the performance of 53 adults with normal hearing (above age 65) and 24 adults with mild-to-moderate hearing impairment (above age

A representation of abstract linguistic categories in the visual system underlies successful lipreading.

There is considerable debate over how visual speech is processed in the absence of sound and whether neural activity supporting lipreading occurs in visual brain areas. Much of the ambiguity stems from a lack of behavioral grounding and neurophysiological analyses that cannot disentangle high-level linguistic and phonetic/energetic contributions from visual speech. To address this, we recorded EEG from human observers as they watched silent videos, half of which were novel and half of which were previously rehearsed with the accompanying audio. We modeled how the EEG responses to novel and reh

Assessing Visual Speech Communication Abilities: Cross-Situational Consistency in Lipreadability.

Speech perception during face-to-face conversations is perhaps the most functionally significant aspect of multisensory processing in people's everyday lives. Although they may not be aware of it, people use lipreading to both supplement auditory processing under poor listening conditions and compensate for age-related declines. Thus, understanding the sender's role in communication is as important as understanding the receiver's role, and in both cases, a fundamental question concerns whether individual differences reflect abilities and not just skills. From a psychometric perspective, an abi

Lipreading in school-age children: the roles of age, hearing status, and cognitive ability.

PURPOSE The study addressed three research questions: Does lipreading improve between the ages of 7 and 14 years? Does hearing loss affect the development of lipreading? How do individual differences in lipreading relate to other abilities? METHOD Forty children with normal hearing (NH) and 24 with hearing loss (HL) were tested using 4 lipreading instruments plus measures of perceptual, cognitive, and linguistic abilities. RESULTS For both groups, lipreading performance improved with age on all 4 measures of lipreading, with the HL group performing better than the NH group. Scores from the 4 m

Lipreading as a communication strategy to enhance speech recognition in individuals with hearing impairment: a scoping review.

PURPOSE: This article explores the existing research evidence on the potential effectiveness of lipreading as a communication strategy to enhance speech recognition in individuals with hearing impairment. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted, involving a search of six electronic databases (MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, Engineering Village, CINAHL, and PsycINFO) for research papers published between January 2013 and June 2023. This study included original research papers with full texts available in English, covering all study designs: qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods. These

Lipreading a naturalistic narrative in a female population: Neural characteristics shared with listening and reading.

INTRODUCTION: Few of us are skilled lipreaders while most struggle with the task. Neural substrates that enable comprehension of connected natural speech via lipreading are not yet well understood. METHODS: We used a data-driven approach to identify brain areas underlying the lipreading of an 8-min narrative with participants whose lipreading skills varied extensively (range 6-100%, mean = 50.7%). The participants also listened to and read the same narrative. The similarity between individual participants' brain activity during the whole narrative, within and between conditions, was estimated

MsDUNE: A multi-scale masked temporal fusion framework for speaker-independent lipreading via Dirichlet uncertainty estimation.

Lipreading, the task of recognizing speech based on visual cues from lip movements, typically requires a substantial amount of labeled training data to achieve optimal performance. However, this task is highly sensitive to variations among speakers, often resulting in significantly degraded recognition accuracy for unseen speakers. In this work, we introduce a novel framework, multi-scale masked temporal fusion with Dirichlet uncertainty estimation (MsDUNE), designed to mitigate the feature distribution disparities across different speakers. The proposed framework leverages a Dirichlet distrib

Lipreading: A Review of Its Continuing Importance for Speech Recognition With an Acquired Hearing Loss and Possibilities for Effective Training.

PURPOSE: The goal of this review article is to reinvigorate interest in lipreading and lipreading training for adults with acquired hearing loss. Most adults benefit from being able to see the talker when speech is degraded; however, the effect size is related to their lipreading ability, which is typically poor in adults who have experienced normal hearing through most of their lives. Lipreading training has been viewed as a possible avenue for rehabilitation of adults with an acquired hearing loss, but most training approaches have not been particularly successful. Here, we describe lipreadi

Exploring the effect of cognitive factors in lipreading: The roles of auditory-verbal learning, inhibition, verbal fluency, and visuospatial working memory.

Lipreading is a critical component of communication; however, substantial individual differences in performance have been consistently observed. Although several cognitive factors have been proposed as potential determinants of lipreading ability, empirical evidence supporting these associations is limited. This study investigated the roles of auditory-verbal learning, verbal fluency, inhibition, and visuospatial working memory in adults' lipreading. The study was conducted in two phases. First, the Lipreading Test (LRT) was developed through a literature review, expert evaluation, and a preli

Audiovisual speech is more than the sum of its parts: Auditory-visual superadditivity compensates for age-related declines in audible and lipread speech intelligibility.

Multisensory input can improve perception of ambiguous unisensory information. For example, speech heard in noise can be more accurately identified when listeners see a speaker's articulating face. Importantly, these multisensory effects can be superadditive to listeners' ability to process unisensory speech, such that audiovisual speech identification is better than the sum of auditory-only and visual-only speech identification. Age-related declines in auditory and visual speech perception have been hypothesized to be concomitant with stronger cross-sensory influences on audiovisual speech id

The visome: Using cognitive networks to examine lip-reading errors in English words.

Network science was used to examine how English words look rather than sound when spoken. Measures of the visome (network of visual word representations) were compared to a phonological network at the macro- (whole network), meso- (subsets of nodes), and micro-levels (individual nodes) to determine how the structure of the visome influences lipreading performance. Conventional psycholinguistic measures and network structure measures were further examined in two databases of lipreading errors. Lipreading errors were higher in frequency of occurrence than the target words. Target words had uniqu

Influence of linguistic properties and hearing impairment on visual speech perception skills in the German language.

Visual input is crucial for understanding speech under noisy conditions, but there are hardly any tools to assess the individual ability to lipread. With this study, we wanted to (1) investigate how linguistic characteristics of language on the one hand and hearing impairment on the other hand have an impact on lipreading abilities and (2) provide a tool to assess lipreading abilities for German speakers. 170 participants (22 prelingually deaf) completed the online assessment, which consisted of a subjective hearing impairment scale and silent videos in which different item categories (numbers

A Selective Deficit in Phonetic Recalibration by Text in Developmental Dyslexia.

Upon hearing an ambiguous speech sound, listeners may adjust their perceptual interpretation of the speech input in accordance with contextual information, like accompanying text or lipread speech (i.e., phonetic recalibration; Bertelson et al., 2003). As developmental dyslexia (DD) has been associated with reduced integration of text and speech sounds, we investigated whether this deficit becomes manifest when text is used to induce this type of audiovisual learning. Adults with DD and normal readers were exposed to ambiguous consonants halfway between /aba/ and /ada/ together with text or li

Criteria of candidacy for unilateral cochlear implantation in postlingually deafened adults I: theory and measures of effectiveness.

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to distinguish the equivalent-effectiveness, health-economic, and actuarial approaches to specifying criteria of candidacy for medical interventions; to apply the equivalent-effectiveness approach to unilateral cochlear implantation for postlingually deafened adults; and to determine whether the criterion should take age at implantation and duration of profound deafness into account. DESIGN: The study was designed as a prospective cohort study in 13 hospitals with four groups of severely-profoundly hearing-impaired subjects distinguished by their

A multiple-channel cochlear implant: an evaluation using open-set CID sentences.

A multiple-channel cochlear implant and speech processor have been used in two postlingually deaf adult patients with a total hearing loss, to enable them to perceive varying degrees of running speech. The results have veen confirmed with open-set CID everyday sentence tests. Using the implant alone, the patients obtained 8% and 14% scores with prerecorded material, and 34% and 36% scores for "live" presentations. This was equivalent to the perception of 35% of connected discourse. When the implant was used in conjuction with lipreading, improvements of 188% and 386% were obtained over lipread
