Specialization of Sesquiterpene Lactone Metabolites in Liriodendron Plant Defense.

Tulip trees (Liriodendron tulipifera and Liriodendron chinense), members of the Magnolia family, are known for their distinctive morphology and ecological significance, but their chemical diversity remains understudied. In this study, we report the identification and characterization of an array of sesquiterpene lactones (SQLs) produced by L. tulipifera. Through comprehensive chemical analysis, including high-resolution mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, we identified a series of STLs with distinct bioactivity profiles. Notably, one of these compounds exhibited anti

Antioxidant, Antimicrobial, and Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Liriodendron chinense Leaves.

Liriodendron chinense has been widely utilized in traditional Chinese medicine to treat dispelling wind and dampness and used for alleviating cough and diminishing inflammation. However, the antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory effects of L. chinense leaves and the key active constituents remained elusive. So, we conducted some experiments to support the application of L. chinense in traditional Chinese medicine by investigating the antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory abilities, and to identify the potential key constituents responsible for the activities. The ethano

Lch-miR156b-directed repression of LcSPL11 regulates flowering in Liriodendron chinense.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small regulatory RNAs that control gene expression through sequence-specific interactions with target transcripts and play pivotal roles in plant developmental phase transitions. Among them, the miR156-SQUAMOSA PROMOTER BINDING PROTEIN-LIKE (SPL) module constitutes a conserved regulatory pathway controlling flowering time in diverse species, yet its molecular function in woody perennials with extended juvenile phases remains poorly understood. Here, seven miR156 family members were identified in Liriodendron chinense by small RNA sequencing, and the Lch-miR156b-LcSPL11 r

Liriodendron attenuates intestinal fibrosis and inflammation in mice with radiation proctopathy.

Radiotherapy (RT) is a commonly employed therapeutic approach for malignant tumors located in the abdomen. However, radiation proctopathy (RP) is a significant side effect that occurs during RT, and there are limited pharmaceutical interventions available. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of Liriodendron, a primary extract derived from the traditional Chinese medicine Fibraureae Caulis, in the prevention and treatment of radiation proctopathy. We established a mouse model of radiation proctopathy through local irradiation and analyzed various clinicopathological measures over

Flooding with brackish water disrupts Liriodendron tulipifera sap flux in an ecosystem-scale experiment.

Coastal forests are retreating due to sea‑level rise and extreme precipitation events, yet the physiological mechanisms that precede woody plant decline remain poorly constrained. We used the ecosystem‑scale TEMPEST (Terrestrial Ecosystem Manipulation to Probe the Effects of Storm Treatments) experiment; annual, plot‑level freshwater and saltwater flooding of a mid‑Atlantic deciduous forest, to quantify short‑ and long‑term responses of sap flux in three tree species: Acer rubrum, Fagus grandifolia, and Liriodendron tulipifera. We analyzed five years of sap flux density measurements (2021-2025

The investigation of inhibiting quorum sensing and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus biofilm formation from Liriodendron hybrid.

The quorum sensing (QS) of pathogens has been found to affect their biofilm forming ability, making it a potential target for anti-microbial therapy. The present research aimed to evaluate the anti-QS activities of different extracts and isolated phytochemicals from Liriodendron hybrid barks and their roles in the inhibition of the growth and biofilm formation of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The assays on the inhibition of QS by the five extracts (n-hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, acetone, and methanol) and eight isolated compounds were carried out by using both

Overexpression of the Liriodendron tulipifera BOP2 Gene (LtuBOP2) Affects Leaf Margin Development in Transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana.

BLADE-ON-PETIOLE 2 (BOP2) plays a pivotal role in leaf morphogenesis. Liriodendron tulipifera is a suitable model for exploring the molecular mechanisms underlying leaf serration formation, which are largely unknown. Here, we isolated the full-length LtuBOP2 gene and its promoter from L. tulipifera and characterized its function in leaf morphogenesis through multidimensional approaches. The spatiotemporal expression pattern of LtuBOP2 indicated the high expression of LtuBOP2 in stems and leaf buds. We constructed LtuBOP2 promoter, fused the promoter sequences to the β-glucuronidase (GUS) gene,

Transcriptome analysis and functional validation reveal the novel role of LhCYCL in axillary bud development in hybrid Liriodendron.

Shoot branching significantly influences yield and timber quality in woody plants, with hybrid Liriodendron being particularly valuable due to its rapid growth. However, understanding of the mechanisms governing shoot branching in hybrid Liriodendron remains limited. In this study, we systematically examined axillary bud development using morphological and anatomical approaches and selected four distinct developmental stages for an extensive transcriptome analysis. A total of 9,449 differentially expressed genes have been identified, many of which are involved in plant hormone signal transduct

LhCAT2-mediated crosstalk between reactive oxygen species homeostasis and anthocyanin biosynthesis enhances zinc tolerance in Liriodendron hybrid.

Excessive zinc (Zn) accumulation in soils impairs plant growth and threatens ecosystem sustainability. Although catalase (CAT) enzymes are central to antioxidant defense, their coordination with secondary metabolism in woody plants under heavy metal stress remains poorly understood. Here, we characterized LhCAT2, a Zn-inducible catalase gene from Liriodendron hybrid, using three Arabidopsis overexpression lines and two Liriodendron hybrid overexpression lines under controlled Zn treatments. Under Zn stress, LhCAT2 overexpression increased Arabidopsis germination rate by 22%, primary root lengt

Lirispirolides A-L, a new class of sesquiterpene-monoterpene heterodimers with anti-neuroinflammatory activity from the rare medicinal plant Liriodendron chinense.

Lirispirolides A-L (1-12), twelve novel sesquiterpene-monoterpene heterodimers featuring distinctive carbon skeletons, were isolated from the branches and leaves of Chinese tulip tree [Liriodendron chinense (L. chinense)], a rare medicinal and ornamental plant endemic to China. The structural elucidation was accomplished through comprehensive spectroscopic analyses, quantum-chemical calculations, and X-ray crystallography. These heterodimers exhibit a characteristic 2-oxaspiro[4.5]decan-1-one structural motif, biosynthetically formed through intermolecular [4 + 2]-cycloaddition between a germa

Integrating leaf-level combustion dynamics into wildfire risk assessment and carbon management: A decision-support framework for subtropical forests.

Forest litter strongly affects wildfire ignition, heat release, smoke generation, and post-fire carbon cycling, but species-specific leaf-level combustion data remain limited for subtropical green-space management. This study investigated the combustion behavior, carbon emission characteristics, and biochar properties of Liriodendron, Rhododendron, and Camphor litter collected from a managed subtropical green-space environment in East China. Leaf specimens were tested under external heat fluxes of 35, 55, and 75 kW/m2 using CONE tests, combined with proximate and ultimate analyses, carbon emis

Efficient recovery of Cr(vi) from electroplating wastewater by iron-modified sludge-based hollow-structured porous carbon: coexistence effects and competition for adsorption.

In the present work, porous carbon was made from sewage sludge and hybrid liriodendron leaves, and modified with iron ions (Fe@LS-BC) carried out on Cr(vi) in aqueous solution from a single-component system and in competitive biosorption with methyl orange (MO) from a binary-component system. The iron ion-modified porous carbon (Fe@LS-BC) showed higher efficiency in the removal of Cr(vi) compared to porous carbon prepared by the co-pyrolysis of sludge and hybrid liriodendron leaves. The incorporation of the Fe element improved the ability of the material to redox Cr(vi), while imparting magnet

Ozone exposure causes a decoupling of conductance and photosynthesis: implications for the Ball-Berry stomatal conductance model.

Industrialization has significantly altered atmospheric chemistry by increasing concentrations of chemicals such as nitrogen oxides (NO( x )) and volatile organic carbon, which react in the presence of sunlight to produce tropospheric ozone (O(3)). Ozone is a powerful oxidant that causes both visual and physiological damage to plants, impairing the ability of the plant to control processes like photosynthesis and transpiration. Damage to photosynthesis and stomatal conductance does not always occur at the same rate, which generates a problem when using the Ball-Berry model to predict stomatal

CD-200 induces apoptosis and inhibits Bcr-Abl signaling in imatinib-resistant chronic myeloid leukemia with T315I mutation.

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is characterized by a constitutively active Bcr-Abl tyrosine kinase. Although Imatinib has been proven to be an effective drug against CML, its resistance has been observed with disease relapse due to T315I predominant point mutation. Liriodendron tulipifera L., one of the fastest growing hardwood tree species, exerts antioxidant activity and anti-inflammatory effects. However, its anticancer effect has been minimally reported. In this study, we extracted CD-200 from Liriodendron tulipifera L. and investigated its effect on cell survival or apoptosis in CML cells

Advancing the helox compensation method to estimate intercellular humidity in leaves of diverse species.

The relative humidity in the intercellular airspaces of leaves (h) has long been thought to be saturating, but several recent studies have questioned this assumption. We present and develop a method to estimate h, describe practical considerations for its application, and demonstrate it on eight species (Gossypium hirsutum, Helianthus annuus, Heteromeles arbutifolia, Laurus nobilis, Liriodendron tulipifera, Magnolia grandiflora, Oryza sativa, and Pyrrosia hastata). N2/O2 (nitox) is replaced with He/O2 (helox), which speeds stomatal diffusion, but ambient humidity is simultaneously increased to

American Civil War plant medicines inhibit growth, biofilm formation, and quorum sensing by multidrug-resistant bacteria.

A shortage of conventional medicine during the American Civil War (1861-1865) spurred Confederate physicians to use preparations of native plants as medicines. In 1863, botanist Francis Porcher compiled a book of medicinal plants native to the southern United States, including plants used in Native American traditional medicine. In this study, we consulted Porcher's book and collected samples from three species that were indicated for the formulation of antiseptics: Liriodendron tulipifera, Aralia spinosa, and Quercus alba. Extracts of these species were tested for the ability to inhibit growt
