Listening Comprehension and Listening Effort in the Primary School Classroom.

In the primary school classroom, children are exposed to multiple factors that combine to create adverse conditions for listening to and understanding what the teacher is saying. Despite the ubiquity of these conditions, there is little knowledge concerning the way in which various factors combine to influence listening comprehension and the effortfulness of listening. The aim of the present study was to investigate the combined effects of background noise, voice quality, and visual cues on children's listening comprehension and effort. To achieve this aim, we performed a set of four well-cont

Listening Effort and Memory Effort in Cochlear Implant Users: A Pupillometry Study.

OBJECTIVES: Following a conversation involves numerous cognitive processes. Speech needs to be processed, retained, encoded and an answer needs to be prepared. Hearing impairment leads to degraded speech signal, which results in the need for additional cognitive resources to processing and encoding. This is particularly true for cochlear implant (CI) users, where the auditory nerve is stimulated electrically. The present study examined the cognitive effort required for listening (listening effort) and retaining sentences in memory (memory effort) among CI users by means of pupil dilation. The

Neural indices of listening effort in noisy environments.

Listening in a noisy environment is challenging for individuals with normal hearing and can be a significant burden for those with hearing impairment. The extent to which this burden is alleviated by a hearing device is a major, unresolved issue for rehabilitation. Here, we found adult users of cochlear implants (CIs) self-reported listening effort during a speech-in-noise task that was positively related to alpha oscillatory activity in the left inferior frontal cortex, canonical Broca's area, and inversely related to speech envelope coherence in the 2-5 Hz range originating in the superior-t

Rasch Analysis of the Listening Effort Questionnaire-Cochlear Implant.

OBJECTIVES: Listening effort may be defined as the attentional and cognitive resources needed to understand an auditory message, modulated by motivation. Despite the use of hearing devices such as hearing aids or cochlear implants (CIs), the requirement for high listening effort remains a challenge for individuals with hearing loss. The Listening Effort Questionnaire-Cochlear Implant (LEQ-CI) is a hearing-specific patient-reported outcome measure (PROM), which has been designed for use in the CI candidacy and rehabilitation process to assess perceived listening effort in everyday life in adult

Cochlear-Implant Simulated Signal Degradation Exacerbates Listening Effort in Older Listeners.

OBJECTIVES: Individuals with cochlear implants (CIs) often report that listening requires high levels of effort. Listening effort can increase with decreasing spectral resolution, which occurs when listening with a CI, and can also increase with age. What is not clear is whether these factors interact; older CI listeners potentially experience even higher listening effort with greater signal degradation than younger CI listeners. This study used pupillometry as a physiological index of listening effort to examine whether age, spectral resolution, and their interaction affect listening effort i

Divergent effects of listening demands and evaluative threat on listening effort in online and laboratory settings.

OBJECTIVE: Listening effort (LE) varies as a function of listening demands, motivation and resource availability, among other things. Motivation is posited to have a greater influence on listening effort under high, compared to low, listening demands. METHODS: To test this prediction, we manipulated the listening demands of a speech recognition task using tone vocoders to create moderate and high listening demand conditions. We manipulated motivation using evaluative threat, i.e., informing participants that they must reach a particular "score" for their results to be usable. Resource availab

Combining Multiple Psychophysiological Measures of Listening Effort: Challenges and Recommendations.

About one-third of all recently published studies on listening effort have used at least one physiological measure, providing evidence of the popularity of such measures in listening effort research. However, the specific measures employed, as well as the rationales used to justify their inclusion, vary greatly between studies, leading to a literature that is fragmented and difficult to integrate. A unified approach that assesses multiple psychophysiological measures justified by a single rationale would be preferable because it would advance our understanding of listening effort. However, suc

Single-ended prediction of listening effort using deep neural networks.

The effort required to listen to and understand noisy speech is an important factor in the evaluation of noise reduction schemes. This paper introduces a model for Listening Effort prediction from Acoustic Parameters (LEAP). The model is based on methods from automatic speech recognition, specifically on performance measures that quantify the degradation of phoneme posteriorgrams produced by a deep neural net: Noise or artifacts introduced by speech enhancement often result in a temporal smearing of phoneme representations, which is measured by comparison of phoneme vectors. This procedure doe

Cognitive Abilities and Listening Effort in Individuals with Vestibular Migraine.

Background: Given the evidence of cognitive deficits in individuals with vestibular dysfunction, reduced cognitive resources may impact the effort required to process auditory information, particularly in adverse listening conditions. Although existing literature suggests impaired performance on cognitive tasks in vestibular disorders in general, research in this area specific to patients with vestibular migraine is limited.Purpose: This article aims to investigate working memory, auditory attention, and listening effort among individuals with vestibular migraine.Research Design: This study em

Voice Familiarization Training Improves Speech Intelligibility and Reduces Listening Effort.

Understanding speech among competing speech poses a substantial challenge. In these environments, familiar voices-including naturally familiar (e.g., friends, partners) and lab-trained voices-are more intelligible than unfamiliar voices. Yet, whether familiar voices also require less effort to understand is currently unknown. We trained 20 participants to become familiar with three voices, then tested listening effort during a speech intelligibility task. During familiarization and training, participants were exposed to three talkers for different lengths of time, either speaking 88, 166, or 4

A Multimodal Investigation of Listening Effort in Single-Sided Deafness.

PURPOSE: For patients with single-sided deafness (SSD), choosing between bone conduction devices (BCDs) and contralateral routing of signal hearing aids (CROS) is challenging due to mixed evidence on their benefits. The lack of clear guidelines complicates clinical decision making. This study explores whether realistic spatial listening measures can reveal a clinically valid benefit and if the optimal choice varies among patients. By assessing listening effort through objective and subjective measures, this research evaluates the efficacy of BCD and CROS, seeking to provide evidence-based reco

Effortful listening: Sympathetic activity varies as a function of listening demand but parasympathetic activity does not.

Research on listening effort has used various physiological measures to examine the biological correlates of listening effort but a systematic examination of the impact of listening demand on cardiac autonomic nervous system activity is still lacking. The presented study aimed to close this gap by assessing cardiac sympathetic and parasympathetic responses to variations in listening demand. For this purpose, 45 participants performed four speech-in-noise tasks differing in listening demand-manipulated as signal-to-noise ratio varying between +23 dB and -16 dB-while their pre-ejection period an

Neuroanatomical changes associated with age-related hearing loss and listening effort.

Age-related hearing loss is associated with a decrease in hearing abilities for high frequencies and therefore leads to impairments in understanding speech-in particular, under adverse listening conditions. Growing evidence suggests that age-related hearing loss is related to various neural changes, for instance, affecting auditory and frontal brain regions. How the decreased auditory input and the increased listening effort in daily life are associated with structural changes is less clear, since previous evidence is scarce and mostly involved low sample sizes. Hence, the aim of the current s

Objective assessment of perceived effort in listening by employing EEG feature.

The adjustment of hearing aid devices can heavily depend on the subjective feedback of the patients. Our aim is to investigate measures that can be used objectively to state a subject's listening effort. To obtain a comprehensive and reliable measure as an indicator for a person's listening effort, we need to have a better understanding of electroencephalograpic (EEG) activities. Decoding EEG signals specifically by the analysis of the instantaneous phase information has been a new trend in the last decades. Throughout many studies conducted in the past, it has been shown that the instantaneou

Aging, hearing acuity, and the attentional costs of effortful listening.

A dual-task interference paradigm was used to investigate the effect of perceptual effort on recall of spoken word lists by young and older adults with good hearing and with mild-to-moderate hearing loss. In addition to poorer recall accuracy, listeners with hearing loss, especially older adults, showed larger secondary task costs while recalling the word lists even though the stimuli were presented at a sound intensity that allowed correct word identification. Findings support the hypothesis that extra effort at the sensory-perceptual level attendant to hearing loss has negative consequences

The Presence of Another Individual Influences Listening Effort, But Not Performance.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to modify a speech perception in noise test to assess whether the presence of another individual (copresence), relative to being alone, affected listening performance and effort expenditure. Furthermore, this study assessed if the effect of the other individual's presence on listening effort was influenced by the difficulty of the task and whether participants had to repeat the sentences they listened to or not. DESIGN: Thirty-four young, normal-hearing participants (mean age: 24.7 years) listened to spoken Dutch sentences that were masked with a stationa

Impact of Single-Side Deafness on Listening Effort: A Prospective Comparative Study.

OBJECTIVE: Single-sided deafness (SSD) impairs sound source localization and speech recognition in noisy environments, requiring greater listening effort from affected individuals. Using pupillometry, this study aimed to investigate listening effort across two cognitive dimensions: selective attention and working memory in patients with SSD. METHODS: Forty-six participants were divided into a unilateral deafness (SSD) group and a normal hearing (NH) group. They completed two tests involving word and sentence recognition tasks, with accuracy and pupil diameter changes serving as indicators of
