Allometry of litter size in dog breeds.

Litter size varies among dog breeds and is related to body size. Generally, the relationship is described as small breeds having smaller litters, and larger breeds larger litters, though the trend does not extend to very large breeds. Allometric relationships are often log-log relationships. This study aims to investigate the relationship between body weight, body conformation, and litter size, with the hypothesis that: (1) body size and litter size are positively related with a power relationship and (2) breed-specific genetic characteristics, which impact body conformation, influence litter

Unrearable litters and prenatal reduction of litter size in the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus).

It is widely believed that common marmosets (Callithrx jacchus) typically give birth to twins under natural conditions. In captivity, however, births of triplets or even larger litters are common, although parents rarely succeed in rearing more than two offspring. The traditional interpretation is that captive conditions, notably the ready availability of food, have led to increased reproductive output, perhaps involving a higher ovulation rate. The present paper provides evidence, combined from ultrasound examinations between ovulation and birth and hysterotomies conducted during the late emb

The Shapes and Sizes of Macroplastics and Other Litter in Rivers.

Limited data exist on the physical and geometric properties of river macrolitter. To resolve this, we reveal the physical-structural relationships of river macrolitter using two of the most comprehensive data sets generated to date. First, we dissect the properties of river litter using a detailed data set of 14,052 riverbank items, for which their dimensions (longest L1, intermediate L2, shortest L3) and physical characteristics (mass, volume, density) are determined. These properties are mapped onto a data set of 239,290 River-OSPAR items collected from 22 river and riverbank sites across fo

Litter size determines circadian periodicity of nursing in rabbits.

Nursing in rabbits occurs inside the nest with circadian periodicity. To determine the contribution of suckling stimulation in regulating such periodicity, we varied the size of the litters provided (1, 2, 4, or 6-8 pups). Nursing does, kept under a 14:10 (L:D) photoperiod, were continuously videotaped from parturition into lactation day 15. Although parturitions occurred throughout the day, a significant negative linear correlation (p < 0.0001; r = -0.68) was evident between time of delivery and time of nursing on lactation day 1, regardless of newborn number: longer intervals between these t

The effect of litter size on the development of the endocrine rat pancreas.

The influence of litter size on the development of the endocrine rat pancreas in the fetal period has been investigated. Rats from 3 spontaneously different litter sizes were chosen to estimate sex, body weight, food uptake, pancreatic wet weight, insulin and glucagon concentrations, plasma glucose and insulin. With increasing litter size we could observe an enhancement of the pancreatic insulin concentration whereas the glucagon content was decreased. Food uptake caused an increase of insulin and glucagon in the pancreas. The observed changes were not sex dependent. Our results show that the

Screening of Candidate SNPs Potentially Associated with Multi-Parity Litter Size and Litter Weight in Hu Sheep.

Multi-parity records improve ewe evaluation but require long-term follow-up. This study compared litter size, litter weight, and lambing type across four parities in 256 Hu sheep and 90 Tan sheep and evaluated six candidate SNPs in Hu sheep. The SNPs were confirmed by PCR and Sanger sequencing and genotyped using PARMS; repeated records were analyzed with mixed-effects models. The Hu sheep population showed higher litter weight and multiple-birth proportions than the Tan sheep population, together with a higher mean litter size. Analysis of 822 records from 256 Hu ewes showed that both traits

Litter size predicts adult stereotypic behavior in female laboratory mice.

Stereotypic behaviors are repetitive invariant behaviors that are common in many captive species and potentially indicate compromised welfare and suitability as research subjects. Adult laboratory mice commonly perform stereotypic bar-gnawing, route-tracing, and back-flipping, although great individual variation in frequency occurs. Early life factors (for example, level of maternal care received) have lasting effects on CNS functioning and abilities to cope with stress and therefore may also affect stereotypic behavior in offspring. Access to maternal resources and care are influenced by the

Within-generation mutation variance for litter size in inbred mice.

The mutational input of genetic variance per generation (sigma(m)(2)) is the lower limit of the genetic variability in inbred strains of mice, although greater values could be expected due to the accumulation of new mutations in successive generations. A mixed-model analysis using Bayesian methods was applied to estimate sigma(m)(2) and the across-generation accumulated genetic variability on litter size in 46 generations of a C57BL/6J inbred strain. This allowed for a separate inference on sigma(m)(2) and on the additive genetic variance in the base population (sigma(a)(2)). The additive gene

Prior mating without fertilization increases subsequent litter size in mice.

Female exposure to seminal fluid influences multiple aspects of reproductive physiology. We tested the hypothesis that extended exposure to seminal fluid prior to pregnancy provides fertility benefits, as predicted from human studies linking seminal fluid exposure to a reduced incidence of pregnancy disorders. Female mice were co-housed for five months with either vasectomized males (producing seminal plasma but not sperm), vasectomized males without seminal vesicles (producing neither seminal plasma nor sperm), intact males or other females, before mating all females with intact males to asse

Comparison of markers predicting litter size in different pig breeds.

To overcome the limitations of conventional analysis of male fertility in animals and humans, proteomic studies have been performed to develop fertility-related biomarkers for prognosis and diagnosis of male fertility. However, the studies were focused on specific species or breeds. Therefore, a study is required to validate whether fertility-related markers would apply to other breeds in pigs. In this study, previously developed fertility-related biomarkers from Landrace were validated to use for prognosis of male fertility in commercially available breeds. Expression level of eight biomarker

Potential Candidate Genes Associated with Litter Size in Goats: A Review.

This review examines genetic markers associated with litter size in goats, a key reproductive trait impacting productivity in small ruminant farming. Goats play a vital socioeconomic role in both low- and high-income regions; however, their productivity remains limited due to low reproductive efficiency. Litter size, influenced by multiple genes and environmental factors, directly affects farm profitability and sustainability by increasing the output per breeding cycle. Recent advancements in genetic research have identified key genes and pathways associated with reproductive traits, including

[Changes in litter size in Kerry blue terrier dogs with abnormal dentition].

The pleiotropic effects of mutations resulting in abnormal dentition were analyzed in Kerry Blue Terrier. A decrease in litter size was demonstrated for dogs with dentition anomalies. The mean litter size was 5.72 puppies when both parents had normal dentition and 3.64 puppies when the parents had hypodontia. Analysis showed that the decrease in litter size cannot be fully explained by the effect of inbreeding and is most probably associated with the pleiotropic effect of the genes controlling teeth development on the embryonic viability.

Association of Polymorphisms in Candidate Genes with the Litter Size in Two Sheep Breeds.

Hu sheep and Small-tailed Han sheep are the most widely raised and most famous maternal sheep breeds in China, which are known for precocious puberty, perennial oestrus and high fecundity (1-6 lambs each parity). Therefore, it is crucial to increase litter size of these two breeds for intensive sheep industry. The objective of this study was to identify potential genetic markers linked with sheep litter size located at ten genes. This study collected blood sample of 537 Hu sheep and 420 Small-tailed Han sheep with litter size of first parity. The average litter sizes in Hu sheep and Small-tail

Relationship of cryptorchidism with sex ratios and litter sizes in 12 dog breeds.

The aim of this study was to identify the influence of genetic carriership for cryptorchidism on litter sizes and sex ratios in the offspring. Weaning data of 11,230 litters in 12 purebred dog breeds were evaluated. Parents were classified as cryptorchidism 'carriers' (C) when at least one of their offspring was found cryptorchid. Subsequently the effects of 'carrier' and 'non-carrier' (NC) parents on their litters were studied. In litters from C x C parents we found an increased number of males per litter in all breeds, a reduced number of females per litter in 8 breeds and an increased litte

Association of litter size with the ruminal microbiome structure and metabolomic profile in goats.

The Yunshang black goat is a renowned mutton specialist breed mainly originating from China that has excellent breeding ability with varying litter sizes. Litter size is an important factor in the economics of goat farming. However, ruminal microbiome structure might be directly or indirectly regulated by pregnancy-associated factors, including litter sizes. Therefore, the current experiment aimed to evaluate the association of different litter sizes (low versus high) with ruminal microbiome structure by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and metabolomic profiling of Yunshang black does. A total of twen

Influence of SLA haplotype on ovulation rate and litter size in miniature pigs.

Systemic blood was collected from and surgery performed on sows of 3 strains of miniature swine bred for specific SLA (swine MHC) haplotypes (a, c and d) from Day 2 to Day 6 after mating (first day of mating = Day 0). Ovulation rate was determined by counting corpora lutea and embryos were flushed from the uterus. Progesterone, oestradiol-17 beta and oestrone were quantitated in blood plasma and uterine flushings by RIA. SLAd/d females had a higher ovulation rate than SLAa/a or SLAc/c females (11.50 +/- 0.87 vs 9.11 +/- 0.68 and 8.17 +/- 0.83, respectively; P less than 0.01). Oestrone was high

The effect of litter size on the growth, survival and behaviour of neonatal bulbectomised mice.

Bilateral lesions of the olfactory bulbs in 1-day-old mice led to a slow rate of growth both before and after weaning and the growth changes were positively associated with the size of the lesion. Mothers continued to care for the bulbectomised mice which showed no evidence of retarded motor development though their eyes opened later and they were less active when exposed to an artificial perfume. Bulbectomised mice failed to survive in litters of two where both infants were bulbectomised and in litters with a large number of unoperated littermates. Keeping litters small and having both bulbec
