Sex determination in varanids, Gila monsters, beaded lizards, and other anguimorphan lizards is still poorly understood. Sex chromosomes were reported only in a few species based solely on cytogenetics, which precluded assessment of their homology. We uncovered Z-chromosome-specific genes in varanids from their transcriptomes. Comparison of differences in gene copy numbers between sexes across anguimorphan lizards and outgroups revealed that homologous differentiated ZZ/ZW sex chromosomes are present in Gila monsters, beaded lizards, alligator lizards, and a wide phylogenetic spectrum of varan

The occurrence of fungi was investigated in the gut of 200 common garden lizards (Agama agama). The most important pathogenic fungus isolated was Basidiobolus haptosporus, an aetiological agent of subcutaneous zygomycosis. It was recovered from the intestinal contents of 112 (56%) lizards. Other important fungi isolated included Aspergillus spp. in 24 (12%) lizards, Candida spp. in 12 (6%), Penicillium spp. in 12 (6%) and Fusarium spp. in 12 (6%). Mucor spp. were isolated from eight (4%) male lizards only. Agamid lizards are plentiful in rural and urban areas of Nigeria. As they live in close

The tetrapod limb is a highly diverse structure, and reduction or loss of this structure accounts for many of the limb phenotypes observed within species. Squamate reptiles are one of the many tetrapod lineages in which the limbs have been greatly modified from the pentadactyl generalized pattern, including different degrees of reduction in the number of limb elements to complete limblessness. Even though limb reduction is widespread, the evolutionary and developmental mechanisms involved in the formation of reduced limb morphologies remains unclear. In this study, we present an overview of li

Segmentation gives rise to the anterior-posterior axis in many animals, and in vertebrates this axis comprises serially arranged vertebrae. Modifications to the vertebral column abound, and a recurring, but functionally understudied, change is the elongation of the body through the addition and/or elongation of vertebrae. Here, we compared the vertebral and axial kinematics of the robustly limbed Fire skink (Riopa fernandi) representing the ancestral form, the limbless European glass lizard (Ophisaurus apodus), and the Northern water snake (Nerodia sipedon). We induced these animals to travers

Lizard ears are coupled across the pharynx, and are very directional. In consequence all auditory responses should be directional, without a requirement for computation of sound source location. Crocodilian ears are connected through sinuses, and thus less tightly coupled. Coupling may improve the processing of low-frequency directional signals, while higher frequency signals appear to be progressively uncoupled. In both lizards and crocodilians, the increased directionality of the coupled ears leads to an effectively larger head and larger physiological range of ITDs. This increased physiolog

Visual ecology explores how animal visual systems are related to light environments and important visual tasks. Anolis is a species-rich genus of small lizards that rely extensively on vision. Different species occupy habitats with different vegetation structure. The spectral properties of the habitats are similar, but total light intensities vary widely. They possess laterally positioned eyes with broad monocular visual fields, and a small region of binocular overlap toward the front. They possess a high-resolution central fovea associated with analysis of important images. There is a second,

SOAE from the last major lizard family not yet systematically investigated, the teiids, were collected from the genera Callopistes, Tupinambis and Cnemidophorus. Although their papillae show characteristics of the family Teiidae, the papillae differ both in their size and in the arrangement of uni- and bi-directional hair-cell areas. Among these three genera, Callopistes showed few (2 or 3) SOAE peaks, whereas the other two genera showed more (up to 6 per ear). In the absence of knowledge of the tonotopic maps, however, it was not possible to clearly relate the spectral patterns to the differe

The myrmicine ant Crematogaster brevispinosa attacks juveniles and possibly adults of the iguanid lizard, Anolis lineatopus; bitten juveniles usually run away. A juvenile A. lineatopus caged together with 38 C. brevispinosa specimens died within hours due to attacks by these ants. On a study site in Kingston, Jamaica, fewer A. lineatopus were found to inhabit a patch densely occupied by C. brevispinosa than a structurally similar patch where this ant was not present. Similarly, fewer A. lineatopus eggs and anole egg-shells were found in the patch with C. brevispinosa than in that where this sp

Two captive-bred lizards, a Western spiny-tailed iguana (Ctenosaura pectinata) and a bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps), were evaluated for anorexia and absence of feces. The iguana had a recent cloacal prolapse, whereas the dragon had a repaired prolapse 20 days earlier. Exploratory celiotomy under anesthesia revealed a devitalized distal colon in the iguana and stenosis of ductal organs in the pelvic cavity in the dragon, leading to colostomies. Stomal stenosis, managed through dilation, was the main complication. Both gained weight within 1,000 days post-surgery. At 2,152 days, the iguana we

The lizards of the species-rich clade Scincoidea including cordylids, gerrhosaurids, skinks, and xantusiids, show an almost cosmopolitan geographical distribution and a remarkable ecological and morphological divergence. However, previous studies revealed limited variability in cytogenetic traits. The sex determination mode was revealed only in a handful of gerrhosaurid, skink, and xantusiid species, which demonstrated either ZZ/ZW or XX/XY sex chromosomes. In this study, we explored the karyotypes of six species of skinks, two species of cordylids, and one gerrhosaurid. We applied conventiona

Because the musculoskeletal anatomy of the trunk is the framework for the behaviors of locomotion, ventilation, and body support in lepidosaurs, comparative study of trunk anatomy in this group is critical for unraveling the selective pressures leading to extant diversity in axial form and function among vertebrates. This work uses gross dissection and computed tomography to describe the muscular and skeletal anatomy of the trunk of varanid lizards (Varanidae, Anguimorpha). Gross muscle dissections were conducted to investigate the axial muscular anatomy of Varanus exanthematicus, Varanus giga

A formulary of drug dosages for use in lizards, snakes, and crocodilians based primarily on a survey of the existing literature is provided. The formulary is presented as a series of four tables: antimicrobial drugs; parasiticide drugs; anesthetic and analgesic drugs; and miscellaneous drugs. An extensive bibliography is included.

Oxygen consumption (MO2), effective alveolar ventilation (Veff), arterial and alveolar PO2 (PaO2, PAO2) and the alveolar-arterial PO2 difference [(A--a)PO2] were determined in the lizards Varanus exanthematicus and Iguana iguana at rest and during treadmill exercise at 35 degrees C. In both species, Veff increased more rapidly than MO2 giving rise to an increased PAO2. In contrast, PaO2 remained unchanged through the highest levels of MO2 attained. As a result, the (A--a)PO2 increased with increasing MO2. We suggest that the observed increase in (A--a)PO2 may be due to a rather low pulmonary o

The release of contaminants as herbicides, fungicides and insecticides into the environment has been listed as one of the six major contributors to the global decline of reptiles. Although reptiles may face severe risk from contaminants due to their ecology and physiology, they are currently less studied than other vertebrate groups. In the present work, we investigated if and how different types of field treatment (conventional and organic) affected the health status of Italian wall lizard (Podarcis siculus) individuals in central Italy. We chose a multi-biomarker approach that evaluated the

In this study, we describe two novel adenoviruses isolated from (i) a common lizard (Zootoca vivipara) found dead and examined post-mortem and (ii) pooled samples from free-living sand lizards (Lacerta agilis agilis). Sequencing indicated the two were closely related atadenovirus strains which were distinct from previously recorded adenoviruses in lizards. Adenoviruses are not always associated with disease in squamates, but morbidity and mortality have been reported. These are the first known cases of adenovirus infection in free-living native British lizards, and further monitoring will be n

Despite being a highly advantageous trait, tympanic hearing was secondarily lost multiple times within tetrapods. Typically, loss of a sensory structure implies a shift to new environments where selection for another trait inhibits the development of said sensory structure, or a relaxation of selection on the sensory organ. However, the loss of tympanic hearing within North American sand lizards (Phrynosomatidae: Callisaurini) has eluded explanation. To explore the evolutionary reduction and loss of tympanic hearing within this clade, we created 3D models of the stapes to analyze morphological

Recent work indicates that bipedal posture in lizards is advantageous during obstacle negotiation. However, little is known about how bipedalism occurs beyond a lizard's acceleratory threshold. Furthermore, no study to date has examined the effects of forelimb position on the body center of mass (BCoM) in the context of bipedalism. This study quantified the frequency of bipedalism when sprinting with versus without an obstacle at 0.8 m from the start of a sprint. Forelimb positions were quantified during bipedal running at the start of a sprint and when crossing an obstacle. Two species with c

The development of tetrapod digits is directed by the Homeobox (Hox) genes. The expression of Hox genes is influenced by exposure to endogenous sex steroids during development so that prenatal exposure to estrogens and androgens positively influences the lengths of digits 2 (2D) and 4 (4D), respectively. Because of this, Manning (2002) predicted that male tetrapods should have smaller 2D:4D than that of females because males are exposed to higher levels of androgens during development. We measured digits in green anolis lizards (Anolis carolinensis) to (a) test Manning's prediction; (b) compar
