The dried aqueous extract of leaves of Buddleia cordata (loganiaceae) and its main flavonoid glycoside, linarin, have been evaluated for analgesic and antipyretic effects in mice and rats, respectively. Both the extract and linarin exerted significant and dose-dependent analgesic and antipyretic activities, the first being obtained against a chemical stimulus (writhing a test in mice) and the second being obtained by a pyretogenic stimulus (yeast-induced hyperthermia test). Furthermore, the response of the animals in the hot plate test was modified by linarin and an aqueous extract. These acti

Strychnos nux-vomica L. (Loganiaceae) is famous for its monomeric alkaloid content, such as strychnine, a convulsant poison. The stem bark of the tree is traditionally used to treat intermittent fever in South East Asia. In various studies, it appeared that dimeric indolo-monoterpenic alkaloids possess a promising activity on Plasmodium falciparum. Three bisindolomonoterpenic alkaloids together with strychnochrysine, previously identified in the root bark of S. nux-vomica, were isolated from the stem bark. The structures of these compounds were established using NMR spectroscopy and mass spect

The composition of the essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation of the leaves of Strychnos spinosa (Loganiaceae) was analysed by GC-FID and GC-MS. Out of twenty-two compounds identified in the oil, the main constituents were palmitic acid (34.3%), linalool (16.0%), and (E)-phytol (6.7%). Since the leaves of this plant are used in African traditional medicine to treat African trypanosomiasis, we evaluated the in vitro activity of the essential oil as well as of 15 of its components on Trypanosoma brucei brucei bloodstream forms and on mammalian cells (J774 murine macrophages) to evaluate the

Indoles are chemical compounds that naturally occur in Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes. For example, indole alkaloids mainly occur in plant families such as Nyssaceae, Rubiaceae, Apocynaceae, and Loganiaceae. The popularity of indoles has led to further research into their function and synthetic modification. Meanwhile, the Wnt (Wingless and Int-1) signaling pathway is responsible for cell regulatory processes, while its dysfunction often constitutes the molecular basis for the pathogenesis of neoplastic processes. Databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Science Direct were used to pe

Gelsemium elegans (Gardn. & Champ.) Benth is a toxic flowering plant in the family Loganiaceae used to treat skin diseases, neuralgia and acute pain. The high toxicity of G. elegans restricts its development and clinical applications, but in veterinary applications, G. elegans has been fed to pigs as a feed additive without poisoning. However, until now, the in vivo processes of the multiple components of G. elegans have not been studied. This study investigates the excretion, metabolism and tissue distribution of the multiple components of G. elegans after feeding it to pigs in medicated feed

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis is the 13th leading cause of death worldwide. The emergence of multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) poses a major health security threat. Plants have traditionally been used as a source of medicine, since olden days and 80% of the communities in Africa still rely on herbal medicines for their healthcare. In many parts of Uganda, some plants have shown ethno-pharmacological prospects for the treatment of TB, and yet they have not been fully researched.
AIM: This study aimed to document plant species used traditionally by the herbali

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The analyses of patterns of over-representation of southern African traditional medicinal plants at the genus and family level provide information about the differences in plant use among southern African countries and disease categories. 'Over-representation' refers to the phenomenon whereby the proportion of plants belonging to a taxonomic group is higher in ethnobotanical pharmacopoeia than in the total flora.
AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to use the Imprecise Dirichlet Model (IDM) to analyse data from ten southern African countries to establish how ove
