Multiple parameters for evaluating posterior longitudinal ligaments in thoracolumbar burst fractures.

BACKGROUND: The posterior longitudinal ligament plays a key role in spinal stability. The purpose of this study was to determine the injuries of the posterior longitudinal ligament (PLL) in thoracolumbar burst fractures. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients suffering a thoracolumbar burst fracture from January 2011 to December 2015 were divided into an intact group and a disrupted group according to the status of the PLL. Mid-sagittal canal diameter, width and height of bone fragments, inversion angle and horizontal rotation angle of bone fragments and local kyphosis angle were measured. Anterior,

Cervical laminoplasty in patients with ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligaments.

Cervical laminoplasty was the operation used for myeloradiculopathy secondary to ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligaments. Some 57 patients were followed up for 5-13 years (average: 7.8 years). The spinal canal from C3 to C7 was surgically opened en bloc unilaterally with spacer bone grafting to maintain the laminae in a 'kept open' position and thus to implement posterior decompression. No serious major surgery-related complications were observed. Favourable results were obtained in 42 patients (74%), but those with advanced preoperative neurological symptoms did not improve. Pati

[Updates on ossification of posterior longitudinal ligament. Symptoms in patients with ossification of posterior longitudinal ligament].

Symptom prevalence of OPLL is estimated between 20% and 50%. Patients with OPLL have neurological disorders, pain/numbness, and trunk stiffness. These symptoms of stenotic myelopathy and of ossification. spondylosis deteriorate patients'quality of life. The ossification extends and elongates very gradually and tiny ossification at first visit hardly grows up to enough to cause myelopathy. A majority of patients experience a chronic course, but some suffer spinal cord injury. Preemptive surgery should be carefully contemplated because definite criteria have not been established yet.

[Ossification of posterior longitudinal ligament].

Ossification of posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) is a hyperostotic disease of the spine associated with myelopathy which is occurred by an anterior compression to the spinal cord. OPLL was first reported by Key GA in 1838, and was previously considered specific to east Asian people, especially Japanese. However, now OPLL is recognized as a subtype of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperosteosis, which is detected in Europe and the United States. We discuss the etiology and natural history of OPLL in this review.

[Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament].

The authors described 21 patients aged 37 to 83 with ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (10 with ischemic myelopathy, 6 with aftermaths of a trauma of the cervical spine, and 5 with the radicular syndrome on the basis of vertebral osteochondrosis. X-ray signs of three types of ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament were defined and specified: linear, curved and mixed. The linear type was more frequently observed in the cervical spine whereas the curved type was more frequent in the lumbar spine.

The surgical strategy for multilevel massive ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligaments.

PURPOSE: Creating enough decompression, favorable outcome, less complication, and maintain adequate lordosis and stability in the patients with cervical myelopathy due to multilevel massive ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) still poses a challenge for surgeons. The aim of our study is to retrospectively evaluate our patients and try to seek a better surgical strategy. METHODS: Between 2015 and 2019, 55 consecutive patients with multilevel massive OPLL underwent surgical treatment. Among these, 40 patients were treated with cervical laminectomy and then anterior decomp

Ossification of the posterior longitudinal and yellow ligaments on the lumbar spine.

Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament and ossification of the yellow ligament are the main causes of spinal canal stenosis. This article describes a case of ossification of the posterior longitudinal and yellow ligaments on the lumbar spine. The patient presented with gradually worsening left lower-extremity ache and pain. The deep tendon reflex was hyperreflexia in the lower extremities. Disturbances existed in the blade and bowel. The ossified lesion of ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament was observed at L5-S1, and plain lateral radiographs and computed tomograp

Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligaments: a cause of spinal stenosis syndrome.

Spinal Stenosis Syndrome (SSS) causes varying radiculopathies and myelopathies by compressing the spinal cord, rootlets and nerves within the bony canal. An enlarged and ossified posterior longitudinal ligament, a rare cause of the syndrome, can occupy up to 80% of the cervical spinal canal resulting in severe, sometimes permanent myelopathy. The clinical and the radiographic findings are discussed.

Ossification of posterior longitudinal ligament and fluorosis.

OBJECTIVE: Ossification of posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) is a progressive disease that causes spinal canal compromise and serious neurological sequelae in advanced cases. The incidence of OPLL in the Asiatic population is 2%-3%, but the incidence is more in the background of fluorosis. Our aim was to study the association of OPLL with fluorosis by comparing urine fluoride levels and to study the types of OPLL. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty consecutive patients with OPLL, observed on cervical skiagram, and confirmed by the computed tomography (CT) of the cervical spine, underwent a 24

The Pathogenesis of Ossification of the Posterior Longitudinal Ligament.

Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) is a multi-factorial disease involving an ectopic bone formation of spinal ligaments. It affects 0.8-3.0% aging Asian and 0.1-1.7% aging European Caucasian. The ossified ligament compresses nerve roots in the spinal cord and causes serious neurological problems such as myelopathy and radiculopathy. Research in understanding pathogenesis of OPLL over the past several decades have revealed many genetic and non-genetic factors contributing to the development and progress of OPLL. The characterizations of aberrant signaling of bone morphog

Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament: a review.

Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) is most commonly found in men, the elderly, and Asian patients. There are many diseases associated with OPLL, such as diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis, ankylosing spondylitis, and other spondyloarthropathies. Several factors have been reported to be associated with OPLL formation and progression, including genetic, hormonal, environmental, and lifestyle factors. However, the pathogenesis of OPLL is still unclear. Most symptomatic patients with OPLL present with neurological deficits such as myelopathy, radiculopathy, and/or bow

Longitudinal split tears of the ulnotriquetral ligament.

Unlike tears of the peripheral triangular fibrocartilage or avulsions of the distal radioulnar ligaments, longitudinal split tears of the ulnotriquetral (UT) ligament do not cause any instability to the distal radioulnar joint or the ulnocarpal articulation. It is mainly a pain syndrome that can be incapacitating. However, because the UT ligament arises from the palmar radioulnar ligament of the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC), it is by definition, an injury of the TFCC. The purpose of this article is to describe the cause of chronic ulnar wrist pain arising from a longitudinal split

Is ossification of posterior longitudinal ligament an enthesopathy?

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of ossification of posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) with enthesis, the site where the posterior longitudinal ligament (PLL) attaches to the vertebral body, by multi-detector CT reconstruction images. Twenty-nine patients with OPLL were studied. According to the plaques' continuity to the vertebral body, OPLL plaques were classified into two categories: "free" and "contiguous". A "broken sign" was defined as a crack between two plaques. The sites where each "contiguous" plaque attached to the vertebral body were then analysed.

The genetics of ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament.

OBJECT: Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) is a pathological process of ectopic calcification with a preponderance for the cervical spine. Epidemiological and familial studies have both indicated predisposition; however, the genetic inheritance pattern and responsible genes for OPLL are still uncertain. The aim of this study was to evaluate and summarize the current understanding of the genetics underlying OPLL. METHODS: The authors reviewed epidemiological and genetic studies surrounding OPLL, with a particular focus on inheritance patterns and potential genes respons

Ossification of the posterior cervical longitudinal ligament.

Forty patients with cervical myelopathy due to OPLL (Ossification of the Posterior Longitudinal Ligament) of the cervical spine were studied. According to Abe's or Yamamoto's classification, 12 of them had a 50% decrease in the cross-sectional area of the spinal canal. Subtotal vertebrectomy was carried out in 8 of these patients and the remaining 4 patients received posterior decompression. We concluded that anterior decompression, if possible, is the treatment of choice and posterior decompression is recommended only for the longitudinal type involving more than 3 segments.
