Lumbar lordosis is a key postural component that has interested both clinicians and researchers for many years. Despite its wide use in assessing postural abnormalities, there remain many unanswered questions regarding lumbar lordosis measurements. Therefore, in this article we reviewed different factors associated with the lordosis angle based on existing literature and determined normal values of lordosis. We reviewed more than 120 articles that measure and describe the different factors associated with the lumbar lordosis angle. Because of a variety of factors influencing the evaluation of

A majority of degenerative changes in the vertebral discs, the facet joints or even the interspinous ligaments, as in Baastrup's disease, are probably caused by pressure damage. Among the various causes of overloading, hyperlordosis--alone or in combination with other adjuvant causes--is presumably the most important one. Its detrimental influence is most noticeable in some peculiar situations, where lordosis is the common denominator of malformations of different origins, as, for instance, dorsal and dorsolumbar kyphosis, L4-5 facetarthrosis with L5-S1 spondylolisthesis, and posterior or post

Despite progress in attractiveness research, we have yet to identify many fitness-relevant cues in the human phenotype or humans' psychology for responding to them. Here, we test hypotheses about psychological systems that may have evolved to process distinct cues in the female lumbar region. The Fetal Load Hypothesis proposes a male preference for a morphological cue: lumbar curvature. The Lordosis Detection Hypothesis posits context-dependent male attraction to a movement: lordosis behavior. In two studies (Study 1 N: 102, Study 2 N: 231), we presented men with animated female characters tha

AIMS: Significant correction of an adolescent idiopathic scoliosis in the coronal plane through a posterior approach is associated with hypokyphosis. Factors such as the magnitude of the preoperative coronal curve, the use of hooks, number of levels fused, preoperative kyphosis, screw density, and rod type have all been implicated. Maintaining the normal thoracic kyphosis is important as hypokyphosis is associated with proximal junctional failure (PJF) and early onset degeneration of the spine. The aim of this study was to determine if coronal correction per se was the most relevant factor in

The rare spinal deformity of congenital thoracic lordosis is illustrated in five patients. Often this deformity is progressive and may cause severe pulmonary deficits and death. In the two patients most recently treated, early spine fusion (one anterior and one posterior) showed promising results--halting of the progression of deformity and even some amelioration of the lordosis. In two patients in whom active attempts were made to correct the lordosis, the complications were severe--one patient died and quadriparesis developed in the other.

BACKGROUND: Consideration of sagittal alignment is an integral part of spinal fusion surgery correlating with superior outcomes. Segmental lordosis is an important contributor to sagittal alignment. This study assessed surgical factors influencing segmental lordosis in a 360° fusion model, including cage dimensions, anterior longitudinal ligament resection, facetectomy, and posterior compression.
METHODS: Six L3-4 synthetic spinal motion segments were used in a repeated measures design. Each sample was sequentially instrumented with lateral cages of increasing height and angle. Lordosis was a

OBJECTIVE The subtraction of lumbar lordosis (LL) from the pelvic incidence (PI) offers an estimate of the LL required for a given PI value. Relative LL (RLL) and the lordosis distribution index (LDI) are PI-based individualized measures. RLL quantifies the magnitude of lordosis relative to the ideal lordosis as defined by the magnitude of PI. LDI defines the magnitude of lower arc lordosis in proportion to total lordosis. The aim of this study was to compare RLL and PI - LL for their ability to predict postoperative complications and their correlations with health-related quality of life (HRQ

BACKGROUND: In surgical correction of adult spinal deformity (ASD), pelvic incidence (PI)-lumbar lordosis (LL) plays a key role to restore normal sagittal alignment. Recently, it has been found that postoperative lordosis morphology act as an important factor in preventing mechanical complications. However, there have been no studies on the effect of postoperative lordosis morphology on the restoration of sagittal alignment. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of postoperative lordosis morphology on achievement of optimal sagittal alignment. The secondary objective w

OBJECTIVE: Maintaining cervical lordosis (CL) after laminoplasty is important for indirect decompression of the spinal cord. This study aimed to identify preoperative dynamic radiographic predictors for the loss of CL after laminoplasty.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 141 consecutive patients who underwent cervical laminoplasty for cervical myelopathy. The following radiographic parameters were measured before surgery and at 1 year of follow-up: CL, C7 slope, C2-7 sagittal vertical axis (SVA), C2-7 range of motion (ROM), CL in flexion, CL in extension, ROM of flexion (Flex ROM), and ROM

After lower-cervical-level spinal-cord tumor resection, compensatory upper cervical lordosis with lower cervical kyphosis was observed. However, no studies examined this compensation following posterior decompression surgery for cervical compressive myelopathy (CCM). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the compensatory mechanism after muscle-preserving selective laminectomy (SL) and to assess the clinical outcomes following such compensation. Enrolled in the study were 125 CCM patients who underwent C6 single-level SL, C5-C6 two-level SL, C4-C6 three-level SL, and C3-C6 four-level SL. Ce

The lordotic curvature of the lumbar spine (lumbar lordosis) in humans is a critical component in the ability to achieve upright posture and bipedal gait. Only general estimates of the lordotic angle (LA) of extinct hominins are currently available, most of which are based on the wedging of the vertebral bodies. Recently, a new method for calculating the LA in skeletal material has become available. This method is based on the relationship between the lordotic curvature and the orientation of the inferior articular processes relative to vertebral bodies in the lumbar spines of living primates.

The curvature of the lumbar spine and the risk of developing either osteoporosis (OP) or osteoarthritis (OA) are influenced by many common factors. The aim of this study is to determine whether lumbar lordosis is different between patients with either disease and healthy persons. A cross-sectional, blinded, controlled design was implemented. One hundred and twelve postmenopausal women were evaluated for bone mineral density as well as undergoing spinal radiography. Lordosis measurement was performed with Cobb's method. The sample was divided in four groups: patients with OP (n = 34, L1-L5 = 40

PURPOSE: The mean potential of lordosis restoration by transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) is supposed to be low in general. In contrast, clinical experience shows a wide range of segmental lordosis correction. In this study, the predictability of lordosis correction should be investigated.
METHODS: Prospectively collected register data were analyzed retrospectively. One hundred twenty-one consecutive patients (2014-2016) operated with single-level TLIF L4/5 (10°-lordotic cage). Segmental lordosis (L4/5) and overall lordosis (L1-S1) were measured on lumbar X-rays: preoperatively (pr

OBJECTIVE: In an effort to prevent loss of segmental lordosis (SL) with minimally invasive interbody fusions, manufacturers have increased the amount of lordosis that is built into interbody cages. However, the relationship between cage lordotic angle and actual SL achieved intraoperatively remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine if the lordotic angle manufactured into an interbody cage impacts the change in SL during minimally invasive surgery (MIS) for lumbar interbody fusion (LIF) done for degenerative pathology.
METHODS: The authors performed a retrospective review of

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Laminoplasty aims to decompress the spinal cord and stabilize the cervical spine in patients with multilevel cervical lesions. Not every patient with cervical compressive myelopathy is a good candidate for laminoplasty. Most studies recommend that neutral or kyphotic alignments are contraindications for laminoplasty. However, cervical sagittal alignment does not have a strong and consistent effect on the clinical outcomes of laminoplasty. Moreover, many reports on the effect of cervical sagittal alignment did not designate the ideal definition of alignment and used differen

STUDY DESIGN AND OBJECTIVES: Pelvic morphology and lumbopelvic lordosis were measured on standing radiographs of 75 patients with greater than 10% L5-S1 spondylolytic spondylolisthesis. The findings were compared with those of 75 volunteers to determine significant differences between the two groups.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Etiology of isthmic (lytic) spondylolisthesis remains uncertain. Causation appears to be multifactorial. The relationship between pelvic morphology and spondylolisthesis deserves additional study.
METHODS: Both groups had a standing lateral radiograph of the thoracolu

PURPOSE: To test the hypothesis that the relationship between PI and L1-S1 lumbar lordosis (LL) is always positive, even in cases with different lumbar sagittal profiles.
METHODS: Standing whole-spine sagittal alignment was measured with EOS system in 100 healthy adults (46 men, 54 women, mean age 40.9 years). The apex of lumbar lordosis was defined as the most anterior lumbar vertebra or intervertebral disk from the gravity line determined by a force plate measurement. Subjects were stratified into three groups: the upper group with an apex between L1 and L3 (UppA, n = 19), the middle group

PURPOSE: To establish whether common degenerative lumbar spine conditions have a predictable sagittal profile and associated range of lordosis. The spinopelvic balance of a normal population and normal ranges are well described in the literature. There is also evidence that certain degenerative conditions can lead to a preponderance of loss of lordosis at specific spinal levels. There is limited literature on the range and magnitude of loss of lordosis for known degenerative lumbar spine pathologies.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of prospectively obtained radiographs from a dual surgeon d
