Magnitude estimation of loudness. II: Loudness perception in presbycusic listeners.

Because clinical methods most commonly used for assessing loudness are indirect measures that require one normal or near normal ear, loudness perception has not been studied thoroughly in listeners with symmetrical hearing loss. In this investigation, loudness perception was studied in three groups of listeners: normal listeners, listeners with asymmetrical sensorineural hearing loss, and individuals with bilaterally symmetrical hearing impairment due to presbycusis. In Experiment 1, a Magnitude Estimation of Loudness (ME) technique was compared to Alternate Binaural Loudness Balance ( ABLB )

Cortical PV interneurons regulate loudness perception and sustainably reverse loudness hypersensitivity.

Parvalbumin-expressing inhibitory neurons (PVNs) stabilize cortical network activity, generate gamma rhythms, and regulate experience-dependent plasticity. We found that PVNs act like a volume knob in the mouse auditory cortex (ACtx), bi-directionally adjusting neural and perceptual sensitivity to sound level over a 20 dB range. PVN-based gain adjustments were "sticky," such that a single bout of PVN activation at 40 Hz-but not at 1 or 70 Hz-sustainably dampened ACtx sound responsiveness, enhanced feedforward inhibition, and behaviorally desensitized mice to loudness. We then developed a mouse

Narrative Review of Loudness Perception Measures in Children.

Recent surveys of pediatric audiologists have highlighted the need for improved understanding of pediatric loudness perception and their role in the hearing device fitting process. The purpose of this article is to provide a brief overview of methods used to measure loudness perception and summarize the existing literature exploring loudness perception in children. A narrative literature review was conducted and 29 articles were reviewed to (1) provide evidence for or against developmental differences, (2) describe variability across listeners of the same age, and (3) discuss evaluations of te

Cortical determinants of loudness perception and auditory hypersensitivity.

Parvalbumin-expressing inhibitory neurons (PVNs) stabilize cortical network activity, generate gamma rhythms, and regulate experience-dependent plasticity. Loudness perception affected by early age hearing loss.

Tinnitus and hyperacusis, commonly seen in adults, are also reported in children. Although clinical studies found children with tinnitus and hyperacusis often suffered from recurrent otitis media, there is no direct study on how temporary hearing loss in the early age affects the sound loudness perception. In this study, sound loudness changes in rats affected by perforation of the tympanic membranes (TM) have been studied using an operant conditioning based behavioral task. We detected significant increases of sound loudness and susceptibility to audiogenic seizures (AGS) in rats with bilater

The clinical relationship between acoustic reflexes and loudness perception.

Speech-elicited acoustic reflexes and three measures of subjective loudness perceptions were administered to 10 normal ears and to 20 ears with confirmed sensorineural hearing loss. Most notable was the comparison between loudness discomfort level and the acoustic reflex, revealing a limited relationship. The use of the acoustic reflex as a clinical predictor of loudness discomfort is questioned.

Cochlear synaptopathy causes loudness perception impairment without hearing loss.

PURPOSE: In this study, the development of a quantitative measurement method to predict long-term auditory adaptation through the stimuli that have been modulated according to different short-term modulation types was aimed to form a psychoacoustic test battery. It might be used in the evaluation process of individuals with hidden hearing loss. METHODS: The individuals participating in our study were separated into two groups: high-risk group (n = 39) and low-risk group (n = 30) according to the noise-exposure score. To all participants, auditory brainstem response (ABR), dichotically digit t

Loudness perception for short-duration tones in masking noise.

The effect of masking noise on the temporal summation of loudness is investigated here by performing loudness balances between a standard 500-msec tone burst (1000 Hz at either 20-, 50-, or 80-dB SPL) and either masked or unmasked comparison tone bursts (1000 Hz with durations between 10 and 640 msec). In all but two instances, the obtained functions relating SPL for equal loudness to stimulus duration could be plotted as two line segments that met to form a knee. The slopes of the line segments at durations less than the kneepoints are altered by the masking noise, becoming less steep with in

Evaluating the loudness of phantom auditory perception (tinnitus) in rats.

Using our behavioral paradigm for evaluating tinnitus, the loudness of salicylate-induced tinnitus was evaluated in 144 rats by comparing their behavioral responses induced by different doses of salicylate to those induced by different intensities of a continuous reference tone mimicking tinnitus. Group differences in resistance to extinction were linearly related to salicylate dose and, at moderate intensities, to the reference tone as well. Comparison of regression equations for salicylate versus tone effects permitted estimation of the loudness of salicylate-induced tinnitus. These results

The effect of the helicotrema on low-frequency loudness perception.

Below approximately 40 Hz, the cochlear travelling wave reaches the apex, and differential pressure is shunted through the helicotrema, reducing hearing sensitivity. Just above this corner frequency, a resonance feature is often observed in objectively measured middle-ear-transfer functions (METFs). This study inquires whether overall and fine structure characteristics of the METF are also perceptually evident. Equal-loudness-level contours (ELCs) were measured between 20 and 160 Hz for 14 subjects in a purpose-built test chamber. In addition, the inverse shapes of their METFs were obtained by

The neural correlates of subjectively perceived and passively matched loudness perception in auditory phantom perception.

INTRODUCTION: A fundamental question in phantom perception is determining whether the brain creates a network that represents the sound intensity of the auditory phantom as measured by tinnitus matching (in dB), or whether the phantom perception is actually only a representation of the subjectively perceived loudness. METHODS: In tinnitus patients, tinnitus loudness was tested in two ways, by a numeric rating scale for subjectively perceived loudness and a more objective tinnitus-matching test, albeit it is still a subjective measure. RESULTS: Passively matched tinnitus does not correlate wi

Sensory and affective dimensions in loudness perception: Insights from young adults.

Traditional psychoacoustic measures often lack accuracy in diagnosing hyperacusis and other sound tolerance disorders, possibly due to their reliance on artificial stimuli and unidimensional scales. The aim of this study was to assess loudness across sensory and affective dimensions using natural sounds, drawing on pain research wherein intensity and unpleasantness are assessed separately. We hypothesized that similar distinctions apply to loudness perception. A total of 102 young adults with normal to mild hearing loss rated 32 sound stimuli (pleasant, unpleasant, neutral, and artificial) at

Loudness perception deficits during altered and absent auditory feedback in Parkinson's disease.

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) present with speech difficulties including abnormal speech intensity regulation. It is possible that the neural circuitry in speech may be unique and more complex compared to the other major motor symptoms. The current study aimed to provide a better understanding of the sensorimotor integration and loudness perception deficits in PD using an altered intensity feedback (AIF) paradigm. Twenty-six participants with PD and 26 neurologically healthy control participants completed a magnitude production task (normal loudness, 2× louder, 4× louder, and max loud

The Louder, the Longer: Object Length Perception Is Influenced by Loudness, but Not by Pitch.

Sound by itself can be a reliable source of information about an object's size. For instance, we are able to estimate the size of objects merely on the basis of the sound they make when falling on the floor. Moreover, loudness and pitch are crossmodally linked to size. We investigated if sound has an effect on size estimation even in the presence of visual information, that is if the manipulation of the sound produced by a falling object influences visual length estimation. Participants watched videos of wooden dowels hitting a hard floor and estimated their lengths. Sound was manipulated by (

Loudness perception affected by high doses of salicylate--a behavioral model of hyperacusis.

The major side-effects of high doses of salicylate include sensorial hearing loss and tinnitus. Although salicylate decreases cochlear output, it enhances the evoked potentials recorded from the central auditory system (CAS), suggesting an increase to sound sensitivity. However, the loudness change after salicylate administration has not yet been directly measured. In this study, we established an operant conditioning based behavioral task in rats and measured their loudness perception changes before and after high doses of salicylate injection (250 mg/kg, i.p.). We found that high doses of sa

Early age noise exposure increases loudness perception - A novel animal model of hyperacusis.

The neural mechanisms that give rise to hyperacusis, a reduction in loudness tolerance, are largely unknown. Some reports suggest that hyperacusis is linked to childhood hearing loss. However, the evidence for this is largely circumstantial. In order to rigorously test this hypothesis, we studied loudness changes in rats caused by intense noise exposure (12 kHz narrow band noise, 115 dB SPL, 4 h) at postnatal 16 days. Rats without noise exposure were used as controls. The exposed noise group (n = 7) showed a mean 40-50 dB hearing loss compared to the control group (n = 8) at high frequencies (

The acoustic reflex threshold: not predictive for loudness perception in normally-hearing listeners.

The working hypothesis of an ongoing study is that the quick and reliable procedure of acoustic reflex threshold (ART) determination in conjunction with measurements of HTL may yield accurate estimates of loudness. The aim of this study was to investigate whether differences in loudness in normally-hearing subjects are reflected in the ARTs and to collect normal material with respect to pure-tone elicited ART and loudness categories. Categorical loudness scaling (CLS) and ART measurements were performed at frequencies of 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 kHz in 60 normally-hearing subjects (HTL<20 dB HL, 26 mal

[Category loudness scaling to evaluate sound perception in cochlear and retro-cochlear lesions].

Category loudness scaling was used to investigate the loudness perception of 31 patients with a cochlear hearing loss (Group 1) by comparing the results with those found in 15 patients with retro-cochlear hearing loss caused by an acoustic neuroma (Group 2). Narrow-band noise signals at four different frequencies (0.5 to 4.0 kHz) were used. In the cochlear hearing-impaired subjects the slopes of the level-loudness functions tended to increase with increasing hearing loss, indicating positive recruitment, whereas the much shallower slopes associated with retro-cochlear lesions were presumed to

Unilateral cochlear implant use promotes normal-like loudness perception in adolescents with childhood deafness.

OBJECTIVES: Behavioral measures of cochlear implant (CI) device stimulation levels can be difficult to obtain in individuals with limited or no hearing experience. Loudness measures are particularly challenging. It would therefore be useful to have a battery of objective and behavioral measures to determine CI stimulation levels in listeners with childhood deafness. In the present study, the authors characterized loudness growth in 20 adolescents: 8 with normal hearing and 12 CI participants with pre/perilingual bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. They asked (1) do adolescent CI users with c

A prospective randomized controlled trial evaluating alcohol on loudness perception in cochlear implant users.

AIM: The aim of this study was to determine the effects of alcohol on the psychophysical responses in patients with cochlear implants. This has not been previously studied. It was also hoped to provide information that could suggest possible sites of action of the known effects of alcohol on the auditory pathway. DESIGN: A prospective randomized placebo-controlled trial, with full ethical approval. PARTICIPANTS: Eight successful cochlear implant users were selected, of whom two had bilateral implants which were tested separately. In total 10 cochlear implants were tested. INTERVENTION: Alco
