Photobiomodulation: The Clinical Applications of Low-Level Light Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Low-level light therapy (LLLT) is a recent addition to the pantheon of light-based therapeutic interventions. The absorption of red/near-infrared light energy, a process termed "photobiomodulation," enhances mitochondrial ATP production, cell signaling, and growth factor synthesis, and attenuates oxidative stress. Photobiomodulation is now highly commercialized with devices marketed directly to the consumer. In the gray area between the commercial and therapeutic sectors, harnessing the clinical potential in reproducible and scientifically measurable ways remains challenging. OBJE

Photobiomodulation (low-level light therapy) and dry eye disease.

Dry eye disease is one of the most common, chief-complaints presenting in clinical practice, with a prevalence of up to 50%. Evaporative dry eye, as a result of meibomian gland dysfunction, is thought to be the biggest component factor. Treatments for meibomian gland dysfunction aim to restore tear film homoeostasis and include warm compress therapy, eyelid hygiene, in-office meibomian gland expression and lipid-containing, artificial tears. A recent introduction to the in-office treatments available for meibomian gland dysfunction has been low-level light therapy, also known as photobiomodula

Lichen Planopilaris and Low-Level Light Therapy: Four Case Reports and Review of the Literature About Low-Level Light Therapy and Lichenoid Dermatosis.

Lichen planopilaris (LPP) is a cell-mediated scarring alopecia that causes inflammation of the scalp and the eventual destruction of hair follicles in affected areas. Current literature on treatment of LPP remains limited with no definitive treatment approach being recognized, although a combination of topical/intralesional steroids and orally administered hydroxychloroquine remains the most utilized option. Low-level light therapy (LLLT) is an expanding technology shown to be effective in a variety of dermatologic conditions. We report here four patients with LPP who show a dramatic response

Role of Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT) in Androgenetic Alopecia.

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the commonest type of alopecia affecting over half of men and women. Only two drugs have been approved so far (minoxidil and finasteride), and hair transplant is the other treatment alternative. Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) has been claimed to be a new safe devise-based modality for stimulating hair growth in men and women in AGA. Searches of PubMed and Google Scholar were carried out using keywords alopecia, hair loss, and LLLT. Fifteen studies were found to be strongly relevant and were analyzed. Studies have shown that LLLT stimulated hair growth in both men

Umbrella review of low-level light therapy: evidence across clinical conditions.

Low-level light therapy (LLLT) and photobiomodulation (PBM) have been studied in diverse clinical fields. Although numerous systematic reviews have been published, their findings are fragmented and inconsistent. This umbrella review of systematic reviews aimed to synthesize the evidence on the effectiveness and safety of LLLT across various clinical conditions. PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases were searched from inception to February 24, 2026. Eligible studies were systematic reviews or meta-analyses of LLLT in humans. Data on clinical conditions, intervention cha

Low-level laser (light) therapy (LLLT) in skin: stimulating, healing, restoring.

Low-level laser (light) therapy (LLLT) is a fast-growing technology used to treat a multitude of conditions that require stimulation of healing, relief of pain and inflammation, and restoration of function. Although skin is naturally exposed to light more than any other organ, it still responds well to red and near-infrared wavelengths. The photons are absorbed by mitochondrial chromophores in skin cells. Consequently, electron transport, adenosine triphosphate nitric oxide release, blood flow, reactive oxygen species increase, and diverse signaling pathways are activated. Stem cells can be ac

Combination of low level light therapy and nitrosyl-cobinamide accelerates wound healing.

Low level light therapy (LLLT) has numerous therapeutic benefits, including improving wound healing, but the precise mechanisms involved are not well established; in particular, the underlying role of cytochrome C oxidase (C-ox) as the primary photoacceptor and the associated biochemical mechanisms still require further investigation. We previously showed the nitric oxide (NO) donating drug nitrosyl-cobinamide (NO-Cbi) enhances wound healing through a cGMP/cGMP-dependent protein kinase/ERK1/2 mechanism. Here, we show that the combination of LLLT and NO-Cbi markedly improves wound healing compa

Repeated Low-level Red-light Therapy: The Next Wave in Myopia Management?

Exposure to long-wavelength light has been proposed as a potential intervention to slow myopia progression in children. This article provides an evidence-based review of the safety and myopia control efficacy of red light and discusses the potential mechanisms by which red light may work to slow childhood myopia progression. The spectral composition of the ambient light in the visual environment has powerful effects on eye growth and refractive development. Studies in mammalian and primate animal models (macaque monkeys and tree shrews) have shown that daily exposure to long-wavelength (red or
