Knee deformity in congenital longitudinal deficiencies of the lower extremity.

UNLABELLED: The knee has various pathologic appearances in patients with congenital longitudinal deformities of the lower extremities. Radiographs from 39 patients with unilateral longitudinal congenital deficiencies of the lower extremities were analyzed to describe epiphyseal and metaphyseal configurations and position of the epiphyseal plate. We defined 22 radiographic parameters of the femur and tibia, calculated the mean values, and compared the parameters of the affected knee with the unaffected knee for patients in different age groups. In the femur, we observed hypoplasia of the latera

Anatomical basis for congenital deformities of the lower extremities. Part I. The hip and thigh.

Congenital deformities frequently produce problems not always discernible at birth. Often, a period of time is required for the development of signs and symptoms. The present discussion presents the intrauterine anatomy of a midterm fetus relative to conditions of the hip and thigh. Cryomicrotomy is used in this study to present the best anatomical evidence of the morphology involved.

Anatomical basis for congenital deformities of the lower extremities. Part II. The knee and leg.

The congenital etiology of many malformations of the lower extremities is undisputed. This study uses cryomicrotomy of the knees and legs of midterm fetuses to establish the best anatomical representations of lower extremity parts, as they are developing, in a partially microscopic form. Adequate treatment plans of congenital defects require a knowledge of the normal status of development, and this investigation provides these data in a unique way. A comprehensive review of current therapeutic philosophies is related to morphology, which is discussed in light of the various congenital abnormal

A Case of Macrodystrophia Lipomatosa of the Lower Extremity: An Effective Measuring of the Dynamic Plantar Pressure for Severe Congenital Deformity.

Macrodystrophia lipomatosa is a rare, congenital, non-hereditary form of localized gigantism characterized by abnormal fibroadipose tissue proliferation. Here, we report a case of a 39-year-old male with macrodystrophia lipomatosa of the whole left extremity with refractory foot ulcer. Imaging showed fibroadipose tissue proliferation and severe giant deformities of the second and third toes. The plantar pressure measurements during gait revealed that both peak pressure and pressure-time integral around the ulcer were increased; therefore, the forefoot deformities might have caused the ulcerati

Bilateral congenital vertical talus with severe lower extremity external rotational deformity: treated by reverse Ponseti technique.

Congenital vertical talus, also known as congenital convex pes valgus, is a complex, rare, foot deformity that is resistant to conservative treatment. We report a case of bilateral congenital vertical talus with severe lower extremity external rotational deformity that was treated by means of a method of serial manipulations and casts. Although the initial manipulation and casting before surgical treatment is the current concept of idiopathic congenital vertical talus, a good result can be obtained by a well-organized conservative treatment with the help of patient compliance, so routine surgi

[Assessment and management of rotation and angulation of lower limbs in children].

Most rotational and angulational variations in young children are benign and resolved spontaneously. However, they may cause great concerns to parents. In order to provide a deliberate assessment and management of lower limb rotational and angulational problems, it is necessary for pediatricians to understand the normal variations of lower limb development in healthy children combined with the features of child growth and development and detail physical examinations.

Research Note: Comparing methods to assess Valgus-Varus deformity in broiler chickens.

Valgus-varus deformity (VVD) is one of the leg disorders affecting health and welfare of broiler chickens. In research, several protocols are used to determine the prevalence and/or severity of VVD. This study aimed to investigate effects of five different protocols on the angulation of the tibiotarsal-tarsometatarsal joint. Angulation was determined (1) in living chickens with fixation at the femorotibiotarsal joint; (2) in dead chickens without fixation; (3) in dead chickens with fixation; (4) in dissected legs, including muscles, but without skin; (5) in dissected legs, without muscles, but

Lower Extremity Abnormalities in Children.

Rotational and angular variations of the lower extremities in children are common conditions seen in primary care. These visits are often due to parental concerns about the appearance of their child's lower extremities. Common variations include intoeing (metatarsus adductus, internal tibial torsion, and femoral anteversion); out-toeing (external tibial torsion, femoral retroversion, and pes planus); and angular variations (genu varum and genu valgum). History, particularly age of onset; duration; progression; appearance and impact; prenatal and birth history; nutritional deficiencies; growth

Congenital Lower Extremity.

The most common plastic surgery-related congenital conditions of the lower extremity are: constriction ring, lymphedema, syndactyly, nevi, and vascular anomalies. Principles of reconstruction are based on the condition and type of deformity. The pediatric population typically has less co-morbidities than adults that can negatively affect outcomes (eg, diabetes, peripheral vascular disease), although children can be less compliant with postoperative care. Growth, development, appearance, and postoperative compliance are variables that especially influence operative management of children.

Comparative analysis of surgical treatment modalities for a popliteal pterygium: a meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Popliteal pterygium syndrome is a rare congenital disorder characterized by orofacial, cutaneous, musculoskeletal, and genital anomalies. The popliteal pterygium (PP) affects ambulation due to severe knee flexion contracture and equinovarus deformities. Surgical treatment aims to correct these deformities while preserving limb sensibility. However, due to its rarity, surgical guidelines are lacking. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A meta-analysis according to PRISMA guidelines was conducted to summarize and compare surgical methods for PP. 183 paper were identified in PubMed and data fro

A case of severe dysmelia of all extremities.

A group of limb reduction defects is defined by congenital absence of either part of limbs. We report an extremely rare case of symmetrical upper limb peromelia (absence of distal bones) and asymmetrical lower limb phocomelia (absence of long bones and a flipper-like appearance of feet) in a female fetus at the 20th week of pregnancy. No other malformations were identified. The prevalence of peromelia and phocomelia is extremely rare, and these malformations can be associated with some candidate genes (e.g. de novo apparently balanced reciprocal translocation 46,XX,t(2;12)(p25.1;q24.1)).

A genotype-first analysis in a cohort of Mullerian anomaly.

Müllerian anomaly (M.A.) is a group of congenital anatomic abnormalities caused by aberrations of the development process of the Müllerian duct. M.A. can either be isolated or be involved in Mendelian syndromes, such as Dandy-Walker syndrome, Holt-Oram syndrome and Bardet-Biedl syndrome, which are often associated with both uterus and kidney malformations. In this study, we applied a genotype-first approach to analyze the whole-exome sequencing data of 492 patients with M.A. Six potential pathogenic variants were found in five genes previously related to female urogenital deformities (PKD1, SO

Supernumerary and absent limbs and digits of the lower limb: a review of the literature.

Anatomical history over centuries includes description of a wide variety of malformations involving the lower limbs. This article offers an organized review of these diverse abnormalities, including new understanding of mechanisms through recent discoveries in genetics and molecular biology. In 19th century Europe, a number of unique anomalies were reported, as well as evidence of foot amputations occurring in ancient Peruvian culture. Embryologically, the limbs develop early, with the lower limb being recognizable for the first time at stage 13 of development. By stage 23, the toes are clearl
