Review of Supramolecular Oleogel Lubricants.

Supramolecular oleogel lubricants construct a three-dimensional network structure within base oils through gelator-mediated non-covalent interactions, such as hydrogen bonding, van der Waals forces, and π-π stacking. These materials demonstrate unique advantages in mitigating issues inherent to traditional lubricants, including leakage, volatility, creep, and poor heat dissipation. Focusing on structural design and performance regulation, this review systematically summarizes the current development of supramolecular oleogel lubricants in the fields of green lubrication, extreme operating cond

Persistence of Polydimethylsiloxane Condom Lubricants.

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is commonly used to lubricate condoms. The detection of PDMS on swabs from complainants can be used to support an allegation of sexual assault. Previous research has focused on establishing analytical techniques for detecting PDMS. This research examined the persistence of PDMS on the penis, in the vagina, in the mouth, and on skin. The longest PDMS detection times were 20 h on the penis, 35 h in the vagina, and 52 h on skin. PDMS was detected up to 4 h in the mouth if the participant did not eat or drink and up to 9 h if the participant slept. PDMS was not detected

Lubrication for Osteoarthritis: From Single-Function to Multifunctional Lubricants.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common degenerative joint disease that progressively destroys articular cartilage, leading to increased joint friction and severe pain. Therefore, OA can be treated by restoring the lubricating properties of cartilage. In this study, recent advances in lubricants for the treatment of OA are reviewed for both single-function and multifunctional lubricants. Single-function lubricants mainly include glycosaminoglycans, lubricin, and phospholipids, whereas multifunctional lubricants are composed of lubricating and anti-inflammatory bifunctional hydrogels, stem cell-loaded

Upcycling of polyvinyl chloride into polyalphaolefin lubricants.

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is a thermoplastic used ubiquitously in households and industry owing to its light weight, mechanical strength, durability, low cost and ultraviolet and fire resistance1,2. With a production volume of about 60 million tonnes annually2, post-consumer and post-industrial PVC waste pose marked environmental challenges, such as leaching chlorohydrocarbons and additives, which contaminate groundwater and soil1-4. To address the formidable challenge of recycling PVC and achieving carbon circularity, valorization into high-value products is essential to mitigate the associate

Allergenic characterization of best-selling personal lubricants.

Personal lubricants vary appreciably in ingredient composition. Although some products are labeled hypoallergenic, these claims are seldom evidence-based. The objective was to determine the potential allergenicity of popular lubricants and elucidate the validity of hypoallergenic product claims. This cross-sectional study involved publicly available data on Amazon's 50 best-selling lubricants as of July 2023. Product ingredient lists were cross-referenced with the North American Contact Dermatitis Group and American Contact Dermatitis Society allergen series. Associations were explored between

Use of Moisturizers and Lubricants for Vulvovaginal Atrophy.

The estrogen decrease in postmenopausal women results in functional and anatomical changes in the genitourinary tract. The most prevalent and bothersome symptoms are vaginal dryness, dyspareunia, and reduced lubrication, which can significantly affect the quality of life of these women, principally those who are sexually active. Hormonal therapy with local estrogens is generally considered the "gold standard." However, there are cases in which there are clinical concerns about its use or women opt for non-hormonal options. Thus, safe and effective non-hormonal options are needed to improve sym

A Self-Lubricating Organogel Patch for Rapid Water Environment Lubrication Restoration.

Reliable lubrication is essential for maintaining the operation of water-exposed frictional interfaces in marine, offshore, and wet mechanical systems. However, rapid lubrication restoration after local lubricant depletion or interfacial failure remains challenging because wet environments simultaneously disrupt substrate attachment and destabilize interfacial lubricant retention. Here we report a flexible self-lubricating organogel patch (SLOP) as a press-on material for post-damage lubrication restoration and temporary surface protection in water environments. SLOP is prepared by photopolyme

Macroscale Superlubrication Achieved with Shear-Thinning Semisolid Lubricants.

Macrosuperlubric materials are pivotal for reducing friction and wear in engineering applications. However, current solid superlubricants require intricate fabrication and specific conditions (e.g., vacuum or inert atmospheres), while liquid superlubricants are prone to creep, leakage, and corrosion. Here, a novel semisolid subnanometer nanowire (SNW) superlubrication material based on the shear-thinning effect is introduced to overcome these challenges. The SNWs achieve an exceptionally low friction coefficient (0.008-0.009) with silicon nitride (Si3N4) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) trib

Environmental assessment of ester-based lubricants after application.

GOAL, SCOPE AND BACKGROUND: Lubricants based on renewable resources are an environmentally friendly alternative to petrochemical products due to their better ecotoxicological performance and their excellent biodegradability. To improve the technical performance of lubricants, and to reduce friction and wear, the use of additives is nowadays obligatory. The collaborative research center SFB 442 aims at developing environmentally acceptable lubricants that facilitate the avoidance of these additives by transferring their function to suitable coatings. For a complete assessment of the ecological

[Use of lubricants in urology. Indications and results].

Lubricants are used for catheterization and/or endoscopic maneuvers. "The lubricant" should guarantee sufficient lubrification of the urinary tract, good visualization during endoscopy, and excellent local anesthesia. Additionally, asepsis or reliable control of the local bacterial flora of the urethra should be ensured. Modern lubricants fulfil these recommendations; in addition, they provide therapeutic opportunities for local therapy, for instance, of non-gonococcal urethritis. The latest results show that there are a few lubricants with antimicrobiotic influence on MRSA (methicillin-resist

LMJSSP for analysis of prophylactic lubricants, spermicides and residues.

DNA evidence in sexual assault cases have proven increasingly difficult to obtain and analyse due to increased condom use. With more interest in alternatives to DNA evidence, prophylactic lubricants, spermicides and residues may be interesting prospects. Current interest in the analysis of prophylactic residues focuses on the evaluation and identification of lubricants and constituents, primarily through gas chromatography or Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Though cost-effective methods, extensive sample preparation and destructive modes of analysis remain an area for improvement. As

OptiLube Active. The role of lubricants in urinary catheterisation.

Catheterisation is necessary for many patients but places them at risk of developing uncomfortable and potentially lethal infections. Catheter insertion can also be painful. It is essential that all staff who perform the procedure have a clear understanding of the measures they should implement to reduce discomfort, trauma and the risk of infection to the patient. The need for staff to be trained and competent and to use an aseptic technique when undertaking the procedure are core principles for practice. Guidance advises that lubricating gels are used in all patients undergoing urethral cathe

Mineral oil lubricants cause rapid deterioration of latex condoms.

As little as sixty seconds' exposure of commercial latex condoms to mineral oil, a common component of hand lotions and other lubricants used during sexual intercourse, caused approximately 90% decrease in the strength of the condoms, as measured by their burst volumes in the standard ISO (International Standards Organization) Air Burst Test. Burst pressures were also reduced, although less dramatically. Lubricants such as Vaseline Intensive Care and Johnson's Baby Oil, each containing mineral oil, also affected condom integrity. Five min. exposure of condoms to glycerol, a frequent component

Boundary lubrication in vivo.

Evidence is reviewed for the concept that the body employs essentially the same lubrication system in many sites in the body where tissues slide over each other with such ease. This system consists of fluid adjacent to surfaces coated with an oligolamellar lining of surface-active phospholipid (SAPL) acting as a back-up boundary lubricant wherever the fluid film fails to support the load--a likely event at physiological velocities. Particular attention is paid to the load-bearing joints, where the issue of identifying the vital active ingredient in synovial fluid is reviewed, coming down--perh

Biomimetic chitosan-derived bifunctional lubricant with superior antibacterial and hydration lubrication performances.

The lubrication deficiency in joints is a major cause of osteoarthritis. One of the most commonly used treatment means is to inject artificial lubricants, but there is a potential risk of infection during the injection process. Therefore, developing artificial lubricants with dual functions of friction-reduction and antibacterial is urgent. In this work, a novel polysaccharide-derived lubricant with simultaneous anti-bacteria and water-lubrication properties, called CS-MPC-N, is developed by grafting 2‑methacryloyloxylethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) and nisin peptide onto backbone of chitosan (C

Particle Entrainment in Lubricants Leads to Extended Mixed Lubrication in Soft Tribology.

Particle-laden lubricants provide a versatile platform for tuning frictional behavior across boundary, mixed, and elastohydrodynamic (EHL) regimes in soft tribological systems. In this study, we examine the evolution of an extended mixed regime between poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) tribopairs lubricated with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) suspensions in low-viscosity squalene and high-viscosity diisodecyl phthalate (DIDP). Smaller particles at low concentrations delay entrainment and slow film formation, while larger particles consistently reduce friction by enhancing load distribution and p

Lubrication of the temporomandibular joint.

Although tissue engineering of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) structures is in its infancy, tissue engineering provides the revolutionary possibility for treatment of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). Recently, several reviews have provided a summary of knowledge of TMJ structure and function at the biochemical, cellular, or mechanical level for tissue engineering of mandibular cartilage, bone and the TMJ disc. As the TMJ enables large relative movements, joint lubrication can be considered of great importance for an understanding of the dynamics of the TMJ. The tribological characteristi
