Cartilage Mimics Adaptive Lubrication.

The natural cartilage layer exhibits excellent interface low friction and good load-bearing properties based on the mechanically controlled adaptive lubrication mechanism. Understanding and imitating such a mechanism is important for developing high-load-bearing water-lubrication materials. Here, we report the successful preparation of thermoresponsive layered materials by grafting a poly(3-sulfopropyl methacrylate potassium salt) (PSPMA) polyelectrolyte brush onto the subsurface of an initiator-embedded high strength hydrogel [poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylic acid-co-initiator/Fe3+)] [P(

Boundary lubrication in vivo.

Evidence is reviewed for the concept that the body employs essentially the same lubrication system in many sites in the body where tissues slide over each other with such ease. This system consists of fluid adjacent to surfaces coated with an oligolamellar lining of surface-active phospholipid (SAPL) acting as a back-up boundary lubricant wherever the fluid film fails to support the load--a likely event at physiological velocities. Particular attention is paid to the load-bearing joints, where the issue of identifying the vital active ingredient in synovial fluid is reviewed, coming down--perh

Catheter lubrication and fixation: interventions.

This article looks at the indications for catheterisation, the anatomy of the urethra, the importance of asepsis and the rationale for the use of urethral lubrication for catheter insertion. The variations of lubrication available are discussed, including the use of products containing lidocaine and chlorhexidine. It then considers the problems caused by traction to the catheter and discusses the securement devices available for preventing tissue damage at the bladder neck, within the urethra and also at the meatus. The variation of devices is examined along with the potential problems associa

Lubrication for Osteoarthritis: From Single-Function to Multifunctional Lubricants.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common degenerative joint disease that progressively destroys articular cartilage, leading to increased joint friction and severe pain. Therefore, OA can be treated by restoring the lubricating properties of cartilage. In this study, recent advances in lubricants for the treatment of OA are reviewed for both single-function and multifunctional lubricants. Single-function lubricants mainly include glycosaminoglycans, lubricin, and phospholipids, whereas multifunctional lubricants are composed of lubricating and anti-inflammatory bifunctional hydrogels, stem cell-loaded

Pleural mesothelium lubrication after phospholipase treatment.

Coefficient of kinetic friction (μ) of rabbit pleural mesothelium increased after short treatment of specimens with phospholipase C. This increase was removed by addition of a solution with hyaluronan or sialomucin, as previously shown in post-blotting Ringer or after short pronase treatment. After phospholipase μ decreased with increase in sliding velocity, but at highest velocity it was still greater than control; this difference was removed by addition of hyaluronan or sialomucin, as in post-blotting Ringer or after short pronase treatment. Hyaluronan placed on specimen before phospholipase

A Self-Lubricating Organogel Patch for Rapid Water Environment Lubrication Restoration.

Reliable lubrication is essential for maintaining the operation of water-exposed frictional interfaces in marine, offshore, and wet mechanical systems. However, rapid lubrication restoration after local lubricant depletion or interfacial failure remains challenging because wet environments simultaneously disrupt substrate attachment and destabilize interfacial lubricant retention. Here we report a flexible self-lubricating organogel patch (SLOP) as a press-on material for post-damage lubrication restoration and temporary surface protection in water environments. SLOP is prepared by photopolyme

In vitro characterization of human salivary lubrication.

The friction coefficients for parotid and submandibular-sublingual salivas of 7 subjects were measured. At the load and speeds used, the lubricatory properties of the secretions followed the McKee-Petroff's curve. The friction coefficients for both secretions approximated those reported for boundary and thin film lubrication.

Lubrication of the temporomandibular joint.

Although tissue engineering of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) structures is in its infancy, tissue engineering provides the revolutionary possibility for treatment of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). Recently, several reviews have provided a summary of knowledge of TMJ structure and function at the biochemical, cellular, or mechanical level for tissue engineering of mandibular cartilage, bone and the TMJ disc. As the TMJ enables large relative movements, joint lubrication can be considered of great importance for an understanding of the dynamics of the TMJ. The tribological characteristi

Biomimetic chitosan-derived bifunctional lubricant with superior antibacterial and hydration lubrication performances.

The lubrication deficiency in joints is a major cause of osteoarthritis. One of the most commonly used treatment means is to inject artificial lubricants, but there is a potential risk of infection during the injection process. Therefore, developing artificial lubricants with dual functions of friction-reduction and antibacterial is urgent. In this work, a novel polysaccharide-derived lubricant with simultaneous anti-bacteria and water-lubrication properties, called CS-MPC-N, is developed by grafting 2‑methacryloyloxylethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) and nisin peptide onto backbone of chitosan (C

Particle Entrainment in Lubricants Leads to Extended Mixed Lubrication in Soft Tribology.

Particle-laden lubricants provide a versatile platform for tuning frictional behavior across boundary, mixed, and elastohydrodynamic (EHL) regimes in soft tribological systems. In this study, we examine the evolution of an extended mixed regime between poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) tribopairs lubricated with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) suspensions in low-viscosity squalene and high-viscosity diisodecyl phthalate (DIDP). Smaller particles at low concentrations delay entrainment and slow film formation, while larger particles consistently reduce friction by enhancing load distribution and p

Ocular surface lubricants.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of the ocular lubricants currently available, consider the components of the various formulations and highlight the status of preservative use in the treatment of anterior ocular surface diseases. RECENT FINDINGS: The primary components of ocular surface lubrication have been, in the past, based on various cellulose formulations that increase hydration. Advances in lubrication have come from areas of the human body requiring lubrication such as the skeletal joints as well as examining the use of natural components of the

Mixed lubrication after rewetting of blotted pleural mesothelium.

Coefficient of kinetic friction (μ) of pleural mesothelium blotted with filter paper, and rewetted with Ringer solution markedly increases; this increase is removed if a sufficient amount of sialomucin or hyaluronan is added to Ringer (Bodega et al., 2012. Respiratory Physiology and Neurobiology 180, 34-39). In this research we found that μ of pleural mesothelium blotted, rewetted, and sliding at physiological velocities and loads, decreased with increase of velocity, mainly at low velocities. Despite this decrease, μ at highest velocity was still double that before blotting. With small concen

Ocular bio-lubricating materials: from lubrication mechanism to dry eye syndrome treatment.

The human eye, a mechanically dynamic and physiologically vital organ, sustains continuous mechanical activity through repetitive blinking-averaging approximately 20 000 cycles daily, while exhibiting exceptional lubrication performance characterized by an ultralow coefficient of friction (<0.01). This remarkable lubricating functionality is mediated by the tear film, a multifunctional biological lubricant combining boundary lubrication mechanisms (via adsorbed mucins and lipids) and fluid film lubrication mechanisms to minimize friction and wear, and preserve ocular surface integrity. Failure

Filling process-induced tribo-charging of lubricated and non-lubricated gelatine and HPMC capsules.

Tribo-charging can negatively affect pharmaceutical processes and the quality of pharmaceutical products. This study investigates electrostatic charging during the filling of hard capsules intended to be used in dry powder inhalers (DPIs). Gelatin and HPMC capsules without and with external lubricants (sodium lauryl sulfate, carnauba wax, and magnesium stearate) were subjected to automatic powder filling at two filling speeds and two humidities. Tribo-charging was compared among capsules and correlated with filling parameters using a lactose and 1 % budesonide formulation. Further, we evaluate

Origins of synergy in multilipid lubrication.

Lipid bilayers, ubiquitous in living systems, form lubricious boundary layers in aqueous media, with broad relevance for biolubrication, especially in mechanically stressed environments such as articular cartilage in joints, as well as for modifying material interfacial properties. Model studies have revealed efficient lubricity by single-component lipid bilayers; synovial joints, however (e.g. hips and knees), comprise over a hundred different lipids, raising the question of whether this is natural redundancy or whether it confers any lubrication benefits. Here, we examine lubrication by prog

Persistence of Polydimethylsiloxane Condom Lubricants.

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is commonly used to lubricate condoms. The detection of PDMS on swabs from complainants can be used to support an allegation of sexual assault. Previous research has focused on establishing analytical techniques for detecting PDMS. This research examined the persistence of PDMS on the penis, in the vagina, in the mouth, and on skin. The longest PDMS detection times were 20 h on the penis, 35 h in the vagina, and 52 h on skin. PDMS was detected up to 4 h in the mouth if the participant did not eat or drink and up to 9 h if the participant slept. PDMS was not detected
