Hepatoprotective activity of Luffa echinata fruits.

The different extracts of the fruits of Luffa echinata Roxb. (Cucurbitaceae) were tested for their hepatoprotective activity against CCl(4) induced hepatotoxicity in albino rats. The degree of protection was measured by using biochemical parameters like serum glutamic oxalacetic transaminase (SGOT), serum glutamic pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), alkaline phosphatase (ALKP), total protein (TP) and total albumin (TA). The petroleum ether, acetone and methanolic extracts showed a significant hepatoprotective activity comparable with those of Silymarin.

Luffa operculata affects mucociliary function of the isolated frog palate.

BACKGROUND: Luffa operculata is a medicinal plant used in homeopathic and alternative medicine. In the United States, it is sold in a purified spray form, whereas a homemade L. operculata dry fruit infusion (DFI) is commonly used in Latin America. The L. operculata DFI is applied intranasally, inducing profuse mucous secretion and relieving nasal symptoms. Nevertheless, this medication may cause irritation of the nasal mucosa, as well as epistaxis or anosmia. Given the growing popularity of alternative medicine, a decision was made to evaluate the effects of this substance on mucous membranes.

Dynamic transcriptomic and metabolomic responses to seed germination in Luffa cylindrica.

Seed dormancy is a critical agronomic trait that affects uniform germination and seedling establishment in Luffa cylindrica. In this study, we performed phenotypic, transcriptomic, and metabolomic analyses on two contrasting Luffa cylindrica materials: Z-184 and Z-114. Phenotypic evaluation revealed that compared with Z-114 seeds, Z-184 seeds exhibited significantly lower germination potentials and germination rates. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that the DEGs were predominantly associated with plant hormone signal transduction, MAPK signaling, and metabolic pathways. Metabolomic profiling

Inheritance and molecular mapping of solitary/cluster fruit-bearing habit in Luffa.

Fruiting behaviour and sex form are important goals for Luffa breeders and this study aimed to shed light upon inheritance patterns for both these traits. The hermaphrodite form of Luffa acutangula (known as Satputia) is an underutilized vegetable with a unique clustered fruiting habit. Its desirable traits, such as plant architecture, earliness, as well as contrasting traits like unique clustered fruiting, bisexual flower, and crossability with Luffa acutangula (monoecious ridge gourd with solitary fruits), make it a potential source for trait improvement and mapping of desirable traits in Lu

Graphene Aerogel Derived from Luffa Sponge Biochar for Efficient Dye Removal from Wastewater.

In this study, we report for the first time the synthesis of a novel three-dimensional graphene aerogel composite adsorbent (LGA) derived from luffa sponge biochar (LSBC) for the efficient removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solution. The synthesis involves an effective alkali-activated pyrolysis process followed by a one-step solvothermal electrostatic coassembly. LSBC acts as a reinforcing and bridging agent, effectively preventing the aggregation of graphene nanosheets and promoting the formation of a three-dimensional hierarchical porous network. As a result, LSBC imparts several d

A comparative analysis of the impact of different treatments on Luffa Cylindrica fiber tensile properties.

In recent years, there has been a growing demand for environmentally friendly materials as alternatives to synthetic fibers, which pose significant environmental hazards due to their non-biodegradability. Natural fibers, such as Luffa Cylindrica, have gained attention due to their sustainability, lightweight properties, and biodegradability. However, their poor mechanical performance in composite applications limits their widespread use. The novelty of this study lies in the exploration of various treatments aimed at improving the tensile properties of Luffa Cylindrica fibers (LCFs), a relativ

Hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent-functionalized luffa as biosorbent in a thin film microextraction system (Luffa-HDES-TFME): A novel low-cost method for PAHs analysis in lake water and tea infusion samples.

Biosorbents play a key role in microextraction techniques by improving selectivity and extraction efficiency. Luffa sponge (Luffa acutangula/aegyptiaca), a porous, abundant, and biodegradable lignocellulosic material, remains largely underexplored in this context. This study introduces a hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent-functionalized Luffa integrated into a thin-film microextraction (TFME) system, providing enhanced extraction efficiency, improved sensitivity, and a sustainable alternative to previously reported Luffa-based sorbents. The developed biosorbent was successfully applied in TFME,

A mutation in LacDWARF1 results in a GA-deficient dwarf phenotype in sponge gourd (Luffa acutangula).

A dwarfism gene LacDWARF1 was mapped by combined BSA-Seq and comparative genomics analyses to a 65.4 kb physical genomic region on chromosome 05. Dwarf architecture is one of the most important traits utilized in Cucurbitaceae breeding because it saves labor and increases the harvest index. To our knowledge, there has been no prior research about dwarfism in the sponge gourd. This study reports the first dwarf mutant WJ209 with a decrease in cell size and internodes. A genetic analysis revealed that the mutant phenotype was controlled by a single recessive gene, which is designated Lacdwarf1 (

Protective effect of Luffa cylindrica Roemer against dexamethasone-induced muscle atrophy in primary rat skeletal muscle cells.

Glucocorticoids (GCs) are commonly used in the treatment of chronic inflammatory conditions. However, the administration of high doses and long-term use of GCs can induce muscle atrophy (MA) in patients, leading to a decline in quality of life and increased mortality. MA leads to protein degradation in skeletal muscle, resulting in a reduction of muscle mass. This process is triggered by GCs like dexamethasone (DEX), which induce the expression of E3 ubiquitin ligases, namely Atrogin-1 and muscle RING-finger protein-1 (MuRF1). In this study, we examined the anti-MA potential of Luffa cylindric
