[Lumpy Skin Disease].

Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) is a viral disease affecting cattle and water buffaloes, caused by Lumpy Skin Disease Virus (LSDV). Infected animals typically develop numerous sikn nodules across the body, along with clinical signs such as fever, decreased milk production, and abortion. The nodular skin lesions and necrotic, detached tissues (sit-fast) contain high concentrations of the virus and, due to the virus's high environmental stability, serve as important sources of horizontal transmission. However, LSDV transmission is primarily mediated by blood-feeding arthropod vectors such as biting mid

Host immune response to lumpy skin disease virus.

Lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) is a transboundary pathogen of cattle characterised by necrotic skin nodules, lymphadenopathy, and fever. First detected in southern Africa a century ago, it has continued to spread and cause significant welfare concerns and economic losses in Asia and, more recently, in Europe. LSDV replicates locally in the skin before dissemination via lymph and blood, causing vasculitis and characteristic cutaneous lesions. Localised innate immune responses lead to infiltration of immune cells in the skin; however, virally encoded proteins interfere with the innate response'

Isolation and Identification of Lumpy Skin Disease Virus.

Lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV), a member of the capripoxvirus genus, induces lumpy skin disease (LSD) in cattle and buffalo populations. The initial documentation of LSD dates back to 1929 in Zambia, with subsequent rapid dissemination within the cattle community in Africa and Asia. Described as the "smallpox" equivalent in cattle, LSD manifests through clinical features such as fever, extensive cutaneous nodules, body wasting, lymph node enlargement, and skin edema. Isolation of LSDV constitutes an important step in evaluating virulence and implementing disease control measures. Skin samples

A study of the pathology of lumpy skin disease in cattle.

Microscopic lesions in cattle infected with the virus of the Neethling form of lumpy skin disease comprised a granulomatous reaction in the dermis and hypodermis which extended to the surrounding tissue. During the early stages of the lesions a vasculitis and lymphangitis with concomitant thrombosis and infarction resulted in necrosis and oedema. A hallmark of the acute to subacute stages of the lesions was the presence of intracytoplasmic eosinophilic inclusions in various cell types. The inclusions consisted of the viroplasm which was identified as aggregates of electron-dense, finely granul

Lumpy Skin Disease in Iraq: Study of the Disease Emergence.

This study intends to report the first emergence of lumpy skin disease (LSD) in Iraq, in addition to describing its related clinical signs. In August 2013, 21 cases of four outbreaks developed clinical signs suggestive of LSD in the Nineveh (Mosul) and Baghdad Governorates, which were considered as the first infected foci of LSD in Iraq. The disease was diagnosed tentatively, on the basis of clinical signs and epidemiological features, and it was confirmed as positive by the polymerase chain reaction and histopathological features. In September 2013, eight new outbreaks of LSD also appeared in

Seminal transmission of lumpy skin disease virus in heifers.

It is known that lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) can be shed in bull semen following infection and also that artificial insemination (AI) poses a biosecurity risk. However, it is not known whether the use of LSDV infected semen in AI poses a biosecurity risk. The aim of this study was to investigate whether LSDV, transmitted through semen, can infect cows and their embryos. Two controlled trials were performed simultaneously. Eleven young beef heifers, naïve to LSDV, were synchronized using an OvSynch protocol and inseminated on Day 0 with fresh semen spiked with a field strain of LSDV on day

Non-vector-borne transmission of lumpy skin disease virus.

The transmission of "lumpy skin disease virus" (LSDV) has prompted intensive research efforts due to the rapid spread and high impact of the disease in recent years, especially in Eastern Europe and Balkan countries. In this study, we experimentally evaluate the vaccine-derived virulent recombinant LSDV strain (Saratov/2017) and provide solid evidence on the capacity of the virus for transmission in a vector-proof environment. In the 60-day long experiment, we used inoculated bulls (IN group) and two groups of in-contact animals (C1 and C2), with the former (C1) being in contact with the inocu

Evaluation of the immune responses in buffaloes vaccinated with a live-attenuated lumpy skin disease vaccine (Lumpi-ProVacInd).

Since 2019, Lumpy skin disease (LSD) has suddenly spread in many Asian countries, including India. LSD primarily occurs in cattle. However, recent LSD outbreaks in India have also revealed significant morbidity and production losses in buffaloes. This has raised concerns about the role of buffaloes in the epidemiology and transmission of LSD and necessitates the inclusion of buffaloes in the mass vaccination program for the prevention and control of the disease in the country. However, there is no significant data on the immune response in buffaloes following vaccination with the LSD vaccine.

Alternative cell lines for the propagation of lumpy skin disease virus.

In our Institute lumpy skin disease virus is grown on primary lamb testis cells for isolation, identification and vaccine production. However, the availability of lambs in Kenya has been seriously reduced over the past few years. This has led to an increase in the cost of using primary lamb testis cells. This study was undertaken to investigate other primary cell lines, which are easily available and provide an equivalent or better yield of lumpy skin disease virus. Foetal bovine muscle (FBM) cells were found to be an adequate alternative for lamb testis cells.

Characterization of bovine kidney cells infected with lumpy skin disease virus.

Lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) infection can cause systemic infection in cattle, accompanied by widespread viral dissemination in the skin, respiratory tract, lymphatic tissues, and visceral organs. However, the replication characteristics of the virus and the mechanisms by which it causes damage to host cells remain unclear. In this study, the ultrastructure of LSDV and the expression profile of host immune genes were investigated. The results showed that LSDV replicated efficiently in MDBK cells and induced cellular lesions, with the viral titer reaching approximately 1 × 10⁷ copies/mL. The

Molecular characterization of lumpy skin disease virus in Iran (2014-2018).

Lumpy skin disease was first reported in the western provinces of Iran in 2014, and this was followed by several outbreaks throughout the country. In this study, 10 Iranian lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) samples collected during the period of 2014-2018 were characterized by sequence analysis of the GPCR, LSDV142, and IL10LP genes. Sequence comparison of the respective genes revealed a close relationship between Iranian LSDV isolates and viruses from Asia and Europe. Interestingly, some nucleotide sequence diversity was also observed in the IL10LP genes of the Iranian field isolates.

Adverse Reactions to Field Vaccination Against Lumpy Skin Disease in Jordan.

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is an emerging disease in the Middle East region and has been recently reported in Jordan. The aim of this study was to investigate the adverse reactions that were reported after vaccine administration. Geographical areas enrolled in the study were free of the disease and away from the outbreak governorate. Sixty-three dairy cattle farms, with a total of 19,539 animals, were included in the study. Of those, 56 farms reported adverse clinical signs after vaccine administration. The duration between vaccine administration and appearance of adverse clinical signs ranged f

Development and Validation of a Population Assay for the Seroprevalence of Lumpy Skin Disease.

Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) is a transboundary bovine viral disease. It has a significant economic impact and is caused by the Lumpy Skin Disease Virus (LSDV). Effective surveillance tools are essential for the early detection of infection, outbreak control, and assessment of vaccination coverage in endemic regions such as India. In this study, an in-house ELISA based on inactivated whole-virus antigen (WVA) was developed, optimized, and validated for the detection of LSDV antibodies in cattle. Its field applicability was assessed through a cross-sectional seroprevalence survey conducted across f

Pathogenicity and virulence of lumpy skin disease virus: A comprehensive update.

Lumpy skin disease (LSD), which was confined to the Africa for many decades, has expanded its geographical distribution to numerous countries across Asia and Europe in recent years. The LSD virus (LSDV) is a relatively poorly studied virus. Its 151 Kb genome encodes 156 open reading frames (ORF); however, the exact number of the proteins encoded by the viral genome and their specific functions remain largely unknown. Arthropod vectors primarily transmit the LSDV mechanically, but the precise nature of these vectors in different regions and their role in transmission is not fully understood. Ho

Lumpy skin disease: A growing threat to the global livestock industry.

Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) is an infectious disease in cattle caused by the Lumpy Skin Disease Virus by the Poxviridae family. Historically, LSD was first documented in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) in 1929 as a symptom of bug bite poisoning or hypersensitivity, described as pseudo-urticaria. This disease, which causes widespread malaise and persistent weakness, is a serious, economically devastating, and reportable condition that lowers cattle output. The illness starts as a biphasic fever. After fever, emaciation, ocular discharge, and agalactia, the clinical signs of a minor infection develo

Development and Evaluation of an Inactivated Lumpy Skin Disease Vaccine for Cattle.

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) of cattle is caused by a virus within Capripoxvirus genus. It leads to huge economic losses in addition to trade and animal movement limitation. Vaccination is the only economically feasible way to control this vector-borne disease. Only live attenuated vaccines have been used so far and no inactivated vaccine has been developed nor tested in cattle. In this study, we developed an inactivated oily adjuvanted vaccine based on Neethling strain and tested it on cattle. Selected criteria of appreciation were safety, antibody response by Virus Neutralization and protection

Robust multi-class lumpy skin disease diagnosis for practical livestock applications.

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is a highly contagious viral infection that severely impacts cattle health and livestock productivity worldwide, necessitating reliable and automated diagnostic solutions. Recent advances in deep learning (DL) have demonstrated significant potential for image-based disease classification; however, achieving robust performance under real-world variability and class imbalance remains a critical challenge. In this study, we propose ConvNeXtLSD, a DL-based multi-class classification framework for automated cattle LSD diagnosis. The proposed model is built upon a modified C
