Alkaloids of the Lycopodiaceae family are of great interest to researchers due to their numerous properties and wide applications in medicine. They play a very important role mainly due to their potent antioxidant, antidepressant effects and a reversible ability to inhibit acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme activity. This property is of immense importance due to the growing problem of an increasing number of patients with neurodegenerative diseases in developed countries and a lack of effective and efficient treatment for them. Numerous studies have shown that Lycopodiaceae alkaloids are a ric

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Interspecific Diphasiastrum hybrids have been assumed to be homoploid and to produce well-formed spores serving sexual reproduction. If this were the case, forms intermediate between hybrids and parents or hybrid swarms should be expected. The purpose of this study was: (1) to check whether homoploidy consistently applies to the three hybrids throughout their Central European range; (2) to examine whether their genome sizes confirm their parentage as assumed by morphology; and (3) to perform a screening for detection of ploidy levels other than diploid and variation in DNA

Rich natural sources of the flavone tricin (5,7,4'-trihydroxy-3',5'-dimethoxyflavone; systematic IUPAC name: 5,7-dihydroxy-2-(4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one) are actively sought since this compound is endowed with a broad spectrum of biological activities and its dietary supplementation has been considered as a colon cancer chemoprotectant and for the treatment of human intestinal polyps. This paper describes a straightforward procedure for the high-yield isolation of flavonoids and tricin from aerial parts of Huperzia brevifolia (Hook. & Grev.) Holub, which grows on the

Profuse growth of Lycpodium cernuum L. was found in phosphate deficient red lateritic soil of West Bengal, India. Interaction of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhiza (VAM) with Lycopodium rhizoids were described earlier but association of PGPR with their rhizoids were not studied. Three potent phosphate solubilizing bacterial strains (P4, P9 and P10) associated with L. cernuum rhizoids were isolated and identified by 16S rDNA homologies on Ez-Taxon database as Burkholderia tropica, Burkholderia unamae and Burkholderia cepacia respectively. Day wise kinetics of phosphate solubilization against Ca3(P

BACKGROUND: Specialized metabolites represent a major component of plant adaptive and chemical diversity and constitute an important source of pharmacologically relevant compounds. Among them, Lycopodiaceae alkaloids form a distinctive group of lysine-derived metabolites characteristic of club mosses (Lycopodiaceae), a relict lineage of early-diverging lycophytes sister to the remaining extant vascular plants. Huperzia selago produces huperzine A (HupA) and huperzine B (HupB), potent acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, yet the regulation of their biosynthesis remains poorly understood, particular

Phlegmariurus cruentus, a member of the Lycopodiaceae family, is a phytochemically unexplored species that is native to the high Andean forests of Colombia and Venezuela. Herein, serratene-type triterpenoids were detected in the ethanol extract of P. cruentus via LC-ESIMS, and subsequent bioassay-guided fractionation performed using the Artemia salina lethality assay yielded four new serratenes (1-4) along with six known analogs (5-10). The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated by HRESIMS, IR, 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy, optical rotation, and a comparison with reported data. The

Lycopodium alkaloids (LAs) are derived from lysine (Lys) and are found mainly in Huperziaceae and Lycopodiaceae. LAs are potentially useful against Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, and myasthenia gravis. Here, we cloned the bifunctional lysine/ornithine decarboxylase (L/ODC), the first gene involved in LA biosynthesis, from the LA-producing plants Lycopodium clavatum and Huperzia serrata We describe the in vitro and in vivo functional characterization of the L. clavatum L/ODC (LcL/ODC). The recombinant LcL/ODC preferentially catalyzed the decarboxylation of l-Lys over l-ornithine (l-Orn) by

Four new trace alkaloids with lycodine-related structures, Lycocasuarinines A-D (1-4), together with seven known analogues (5-11), were isolated from the chloroform extract of Lycopodiastrum casuarinoides. The structures and stereochemistry of 1-4 were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis (IR, UV, MS, NMR, HRESIMS and CD) and comparison with known ones. The acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrocholinesterase (BuChE) inhibitory activities of nine isolates were evaluated. Lycocasuarinine D (4) showed the most potent AChE inhibitory effect. In addition, a plausible biogenetic pathway of compound

The protective potentials of a potentized homeopathic drug, Lycopodium-30, prepared from extract of spores of a plant, Lyocopodium clavatum (Fam: Lycopodiaceae) and used as a remedy for various liver ailments, have been tested in mice chronically fed p-dimethyl amino azo benzene (p-DAB) - an initiator, and phenobarbital (PB) - a promoter of hepatic cancer, by using some cytogenetic endpoints like chromosome aberrations (CA), micronuclei (MN), mitotic index (MI) and sperm head abnormality (SHA), and toxicity biomarkers like acid and alkaline phosphatases (AcP and AlkP, respectively), alanine an

The endodermis is a vital barrier tissue in plants, but its origin, evolution, and homologies across land plants remain ambiguous. Here, we implement a multifaceted investigation of the endodermis in lycopsids to shed light on its evolution in roots. We confirmed the presence of an endodermis with Casparian strips (CSs) in two of the three living lineages of lycopsids, while endodermoid layers with polar lignin caps were identified in the Lycopodiaceae. Although lignified tissues, including CSs, can be preserved in fossils, we did not find evidence for either an endodermis or an endodermoid in

Huperzine A (Hup-A), an alkaloid isolated from Huperzia serrata (Thunb.) Trevis. (Lycopodiaceae), acts as a selective inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase and shows memory-enhancing properties. Although Hup-A has shown promising expectation for Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients, controlled clinical trials supporting its use are limited. The aim of this work was to study in vivo, in an animal model of AD, the pharmacological activity of systemic administration of Hup-A on cortex- and hippocampus-dependent memory. With this purpose, a set of experiments was planned to evaluate attention, learning,
