Lymph node ratio is more predictive than traditional lymph node stratification in lymph node positive invasive breast cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationships between lymph node ratio (LNR, the ratio of positive lymph nodes in excised axillary lymph nodes) and disease-free survival (DFS) by comparing with traditional absolute positive lymph node number (pN classification) for prediction of breast cancer (BC) progrnosis. METHODS AND PATIENTS: We retrospectively reviewed patients who received comprehensive therapy in Department of Breast Surgery, Hubei Cancer Hospital, China from Jan 2002 to Dec 2006 (Group A), and Department of Breast and Thyroid Surgery, Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University, China from Jun 20

The impact of the number of harvested central lymph nodes on the lymph node ratio.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of lymph node harvest on the lymph node ratio (LNR). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 106 patients diagnosed preoperatively with PTMC (papillary thyroid microcarcinoma), no evidence of central or lateral neck nodal metastasis, and who underwent a total thyroidectomy and bilateral central lymph node neck dissection (CND). RESULTS: The median number of retrieved lymph nodes in the central compartments was 7±6.59 (range: 1-42). The mean number of metastatic lymph nodes in the central compartments on pathology was 1.1±1.79 (range

Lymph Node Ratio in Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy Era: Are We Losing Prognostic Information?

BACKGROUND: The number of involved axillary lymph nodes (LNs) found pathologically is regarded as a significant prognostic factor in early-stage breast cancer (EBC). Recently, there is speculation that LN ratio (LNR) may be a better surrogate at predicting cancer-specific outcome than number of involved LNs. This study investigated prognostic value of LNR, using predetermined cutoff values. METHODS: Data included all women diagnosed with node-positive EBC between January 1, 2001, and December 31, 2010 (N = 553). Retrospective evaluation for clinical, demographic, and pathologic data was perfo

Esophageal cancer with distant lymph node metastasis: prognostic significance of metastatic lymph node ratio.

The cervical and celiac lymph node metastases are defined as distant metastasis (Mlym) from thoracic esophageal carcinoma by TNM (primary tumor, regional lymph nodes, and distant metastasis) classification. The prognostic factors, however, of such distant node metastases are not fully understood. Of 85 patients with node-positive thoracic esophageal carcinoma who were treated with the same modalities of treatment, 31 (37%) had Mlym. Prognostic factors for long-term survival were analyzed by univariate and multivariate analyzes. Three patients are alive and free of cancer, and two patients surv

INFLUENCE OF NEOADJUVANT THERAPY ON THE RATIO OF LYMPH NODES.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the relationship between the ratio of affected lymph nodes (LNR) and clinical and anatomopathological variables in patients with rectal adenocarcinoma submitted or not to neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy. METHODS: The LNR was determined by dividing the number of compromised LNR by the total number of LNR dissected in the surgical specimen. Patients were divided into two groups: with QRT and without QRT. In each group, the relationship between LNR and the following variables was evaluated: degree of cell differentiation, depth of invasion in the rectal wall, angiolymphatic

Lymph node ratio predicts local recurrence for periampullary tumours.

BACKGROUND: To better define the prognostic role of nodal disease, evaluation of metastatic lymph node ratio (MLR) has been performed, and this method has recently gained prominence in various gastrointestinal cancers. The present study attempts to identify prognostic factors and evaluate the independent prognostic influence of MLR in patients who have undergone curative pancreaticoduodenectomy. METHODS: In our institution within the study period, 111 patients received curative pancreaticoduodenectomy for periampullary cancers. Clinicopathologic data were collected and MLR was calculated for

Clinicopathologic Determinants of Lymph Node Count and Prognostic Significance of Metastatic Lymph Node Ratio in Colorectal Cancer.

Background/Objectives: Accurate lymph node (LN) evaluation is crucial to predicting outcomes in colorectal cancer (CRC). Higher lymph node counts (LNCs) improve prognosis, whereas increased metastatic involvement worsens survival. This study aimed to identify factors associated with higher LNCs and evaluate the prognostic value of the metastatic lymph node ratio (MLNR). Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on 989 CRC resections. Patients were stratified into four MLNR categories-MLNR0 (no metastasis), MLNR1 (<0.20), MLNR2 (0.20-0.50), and MLNR3 (>0.50)-and into two LNC groups-lower

Superiority of Pathologic Lymph Node Ratio over Positive Lymph Node Count in Operated Early-Stage Breast Cancer.

AIM: In early-stage breast cancer, the axillary lymph nodes play a crucial role in determining the prognosis of the disease. The rate of lymph node involvement might be a more valuable prognostic factor than the number of positive lymph nodes. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate whether the lymph node ratio (LNR) is a superior prognostic indicator compared to the pathologic lymph node count in early-stage disease. METHODS: We included 3053 non-metastatic, lymph node-positive breast cancer patients who were treated and followed at 6 medical oncology centers in Türkiye between 2004-2018. Based on L

Prognostic performance of examined lymph nodes, lymph node ratio, and positive lymph nodes in gastric cancer: a competing risk model study.

BACKGROUND: Previous research on the prognostic effectiveness of examined lymph nodes (ELN), lymph node ratio (LNR), and positive lymph nodes (pN) in postoperative gastric cancer (GC) has yielded inconsistent results despite their widespread use. METHODS: This study used a competing risk model (CRM) to evaluate the prognostic efficacy of these markers in patients with GC. Data from 337 patients with lymph node (LN)-positive stage II GC undergoing resection and chemotherapy between 2010 and 2015 were collected from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. Assessment of the nodal status in ampullary carcinoma: the number of positive lymph nodes versus the lymph node ratio.

BACKGROUND: This study was intended to compare the prognostic power of the number of positive lymph nodes with that of the lymph node ratio in patients with ampullary carcinoma. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted of the medical records of 71 consecutive patients with ampullary carcinoma who underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy with regional lymph node dissection. A total of 2151 lymph nodes were dissected (median: 28 nodes per patient) and examined histologically. Cutoff points were determined for both the number of positive nodes and the lymph node ratio using χ(2) scores calculate

Lymph node ratio predicts recurrence in pediatric papillary thyroid cancer.

BACKGROUND: Regional lymph node (LN) metastasis at the time of presentation plays a significant role in predicting recurrence in patients with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). Multiple studies in the adult population have demonstrated that the lymph node ratio (LNR) in both the central and lateral neck can improve the accuracy of recurrence prediction, but this ratio has not been studied in the pediatric population. In this study, we sought to investigate the LNR in the central and lateral compartments as a prognostic predictor for recurrence in pediatric patients with PTC. METHODS: A retrospe

Does lymph node ratio impact survival in resected periampullary malignancies?

BACKGROUND: Lymph node ratio (LNR) has been associated with long-term survival in patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma; however, this has not been demonstrated in other periampullary malignancies. The purpose of this study was to determine if LNR is associated with survival in other periampullary malignancies. METHODS: A retrospective review of a prospective database of 522 pancreaticoduodenectomies (PDs) performed between 1988 and 2007 was undertaken. Clinicopathologic data were collected, and LNR was calculated. Patients with positive lymph node (LN) status were placed into the following

Factors Affecting Central Node Metastasis and Metastatic Lymph Node Ratio in Papillary Thyroid Cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Despite the growing evidence that metastatic lymph node ratio (MLNR) is a valuable predictor for the prognosis of papillary thyroid carcinoma, it has not yet been fully determined which factors give the ratio predictive value independent of the number of metastatic lymph nodes (MLNs). STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING: A comprehensive cancer center. METHODS: Recurrence and clinicopathologic factors were analyzed in 2409 patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma who underwent total thyroidectomy and central node dissection. Lymph node ratio as an alternative to pN staging in node-positive breast cancer.

PURPOSE: In the current pTNM classification system, nodal status of breast cancer is based on the number of involved lymph nodes and does not account for the total number of lymph nodes removed. In this study, we assessed the prognostic value of the lymph node ratio (LNR; ie, ratio of positive over excised lymph nodes) as compared with pN staging and determined its optimal cutoff points. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From the Geneva Cancer Registry, we identified all women diagnosed with node-positive breast cancer between 1980 and 2004 (n = 1,829). The prognostic value of LNRs was calculated for val

Prognostic value of lymph node ratio in node-positive breast cancer in Egyptian patients.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer in Egypt is the most common cancer among women and is the leading cause of cancer mortality. Traditionally, axillary lymph node involvement is considered among the most important prognostic factors in breast cancer. Nonetheless, accumulating evidence suggests that axillary lymph node ratio should be considered as an alternative to classical pN classification. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of patients with operable node-positive breast cancer, to investigate the prognostic significance of axillary lymph node ratio. RESULTS: Five-hundred
