Lyngbya dermatitis (toxic seaweed dermatitis).

Lyngbya dermatitis is an irritant contact dermatitis caused by the blue-green alga (or cyanobacterium), Lyngbya majuscula, commonly found in tropical and temperate waters worldwide. Lesions generally appear in a bathing suit distribution minutes to hours after exposure, initially with itching or burning, evolving into a blistering eruption which eventually desquamates leaving bright red, tender erosions that resolve spontaneously in about a week. Our case is of a 13-year-old female that presented with haphazard clusters of reddish-brown vesicles and papules on her abdomen one day after swimmin

Aquatic Antagonists: Seaweed Dermatitis (Lyngbya majuscula).

The cyanobacterium Lyngbya majuscula grows in marine and estuarine environments across the world and produces many biologically active compounds. Direct contact with L majuscula and its dermatoxins can cause seaweed dermatitis, which manifests as a papulovesicular eruption. As oceans warm, L majuscula will bloom more frequently; therefore, public awareness of L majuscula and seaweed dermatitis in oceanside communities can help promote precautions that can reduce the risk for exposure. This article describes the irritants that lead to dermatitis, clinical presentation, and prevention and manage

Biogenic Synthesis of Gold Nanoparticles with Cyanobacterium Lyngbya confervoides and In Vitro Antimicrobial Assessment.

Green nanotechnology is a suitable method, where natural reductants synthesize nanoparticles in an eco-friendly, safe, less hazardous, and less toxic manner. Nowadays, multidrug-resistant bacteria cause severe infections in public health; thus, new eco-friendly and less toxic antimicrobials are needed. An aliquot of 10 mL aqueous extract of nonnitrogen fixing cyanobacterium Lyngbya confervoides was added to a 40 mL 1 mm solution of HAuCl4 to obtain L. confervoides nanoparticles (Lc-AuNPs). Furthermore, the synthesized Lc-AuNPs were analyzed with UV-vis spectroscopy; the peak was obtained at 53

Scytonemin extracted from Lyngbya aestuarii exhibits anti-cancer activity: involvement of c-Myc pathway inhibition.

The increasing incidence of cancer-related morbidity and mortality underscores the urgent need for novel, less toxic therapeutic options. In this study, we isolated scytonemin from the marine cyanobacterium Lyngbya aestuarii. Its identification was confirmed through an absorption peak at 384 nm and MALDI-TOF MS analysis showing a [M + H]+ ion at m/z 545.838, consistent with its oxidised form (C36H20N2O4). Scytonemin demonstrated significant cytotoxicity against breast cancer cell lines MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7, with IC50 values of 8 μM and 4 μM, respectively, while remaining non-toxic to human per

Cyanobacteria as Nanogold Factories: Chemical and Anti-Myocardial Infarction Properties of Gold Nanoparticles Synthesized by Lyngbya majuscula.

To the best of our knowledge, cyanobacterial strains from the Arabian Gulf have never been investigated with respect to their potential for nanoparticle production. Lyngbya majuscula was isolated from the AlOqair area, Al-Ahsa Government, Eastern Province, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The cyanobacterium was initially incubated with 1500 mg/mL of HAuCl₄ for two days. The blue-green strain turned purple, which indicated the intracellular formation of gold nanoparticles. Prolonged incubation for over two months triggered the extracellular production of nanogold particles. UV-visible spectroscopy meas

Microbiome of seventh-century old Parsurameswara stone monument of India and role of desiccation-tolerant cyanobacterium Lyngbya corticicola on its biodeterioration.

The Parsurameswara stone monument, built in the seventh century, is one of the oldest stone monuments in Odisha, India. Metagenomic analysis of the biological crust samples collected from the stone monument revealed 17 phyla in the microbiome, with Proteobacteria being the most dominant phylum, followed by cyanobacteria. Eight cyanobacteria were isolated. Lyngbya corticicola was the dominant cyanobacterium in all crust samples and could tolerate six months of desiccation in vitro. With six months of desiccation, chlorophyll-a decreased; however, carotenoid and cellular carbohydrate contents of

Total Synthesis and Structural Reassignment of Lyngbyaloside C Highlighted by Intermolecular Ketene Esterification.

Lyngbyaloside C, a classic macrolide, isolated from Lyngbya bouilloni, has shown moderate anticancer activity against several cancer cell lines. Here, we report the first total synthesis and stereochemical configuration reassignment of lyngbyaloside C. The synthesis highlights a one-pot intermolecular ketene esterification reaction to form the crucial tertiary ester and tetrahydropyran. In addition, a novel and concise synthetic pathway towards the 1,3-syn secondary, tertiary diol fragment is described using a regio- and stereospecific electrophilic ether transfer reaction.

[The cultivation of Fossaria cubensis (Pfeiffer) (Pulmonata: Lymnaeidae), the intermediate host of Fasciola hepatica (Linnaeus) in Cuba].

A method for the culture of Fossaria cubensis (Pfeiffer), the major intermediate host of fascioliasis in Cuba, was assessed. For this purpose, an algae-bearing plate was designed based on a culture of Cyanophyceae algae from Lyngbya, Leotolyngbya, Phormidium, and Schimidleinema on Petri plates 12 cm in diameter with mud substrate and high levels of nitrate and calcium carbonate. Fifteen days after incubation with continuous light, these plates were used as aquaria for mollusc breeding. Under such conditions the generational time is reduced and the growth and reproduction of Fossaria cubensis w

Acute Toxicity of Carbon Nanotubes, Carbon Nanodots, and Cell-Penetrating Peptides to Freshwater Cyanobacteria.

Synthetic non-metallic nanoparticles (NMNPs) such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), carbon nanodots (CNDs), and cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) have been explored to treat harmful algal blooms. However, their strain-specific algicidal activities have been rarely investigated. Here we determined their acute toxicity to nine freshwater cyanobacterial strains belonging to seven genera, including Microcystis aeruginosa UTEX 2386, M. aeruginosa UTEX 2385, M. aeruginosa LE3, Anabaena cylindrica PCC 7122, Aphanizomenon sp. Almiramides A-C: discovery and development of a new class of leishmaniasis lead compounds.

Leishmaniasis is a debilitating disease caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Leishmania, which affects an estimated 12 million people worldwide. The discovery of new lead compounds for leishmaniasis is therefore a pressing concern for global health programs. The organic extract of a Panamanian collection of the marine cyanobacterium Lyngbya majuscula showed strong in vitro activity in two complementary screens against the tropical parasite Leishmania donovani, the causative agent of visceral leishmaniasis. Chromatographic separation of this complex mixture led to the isolation of the hig

A review and assessment of cyanobacterial toxins as cardiovascular health hazards.

Eutrophicated waters frequently support bloom-forming cyanobacteria, many of which produce potent cyanobacterial toxins (cyanotoxins). Cyanotoxins can cause adverse health effects in a wide range of organisms where the toxins may target the liver, other internal organs, mucous surfaces and the skin and nervous system. This review surveyed more than 100 studies concerning the cardiovascular toxicity of cyanotoxins and related topics. Over 60 studies have described various negative effects on the cardiovascular system by seven major types of cyanotoxins, i.e. the microcystin (MC), nodularin (NOD

Aerophytic Cyanophyceae (cyanobacteria) from some Cairo districts, Egypt.

Twenty three aerophytic blue-green algal species were isolated and identified from 5 districts in Cairo, namely: Nasr City, Abassiya, Downtown, Maadi and Tebbin. Downtown contained the highest numbers of total algal species (13 species) during the study throughout the years 2004-2005 in comparison to other districts. The composition of aeroalgal taxa varied with seasonal changes. Chroococcus limenticus, Lyngbya lagerheimii, Phormidium ambigum and Schizothrix purpurascens have been isolated during the both years 2004-2005, while the rest of algal species (nineteen species) have been trapped eit

Kalkitoxin: A Potent Suppressor of Distant Breast Cancer Metastasis.

Bone metastasis resulting from advanced breast cancer causes osteolysis and increases mortality in patients. Kalkitoxin (KT), a lipopeptide toxin derived from the marine cyanobacterium Moorena producens (previously Lyngbya majuscula), has an anti-metastatic effect on cancer cells. We verified that KT suppressed cancer cell migration and invasion in vitro and in animal models in the present study. We confirmed that KT suppressed osteoclast-soup-derived MDA-MB-231 cell invasion in vitro and induced osteolysis in a mouse model, possibly enhancing/inhibiting metastasis markers. Furthermore, KT inh
