Members of the SEPALLATA (SEP) gene sub-family encode class E floral homeotic MADS-domain transcription factors (MADS TFs) that specify the identity of floral organs. The Arabidopsis thaliana genome contains 4 ancestrally duplicated and functionally redundant SEP genes, SEP1-4. Recently, a gene family of unique effectors, phyllogens, was identified as an inducer of leaf-like floral organs in phytoplasmas (plant pathogenic bacteria). While it was shown that phyllogens target some MADS TFs, including SEP3 for degradation, it is unknown whether the other SEPs (SEP1, SEP2, and SEP4) of Arabidopsis

Phytoplasmas are bacterial plant pathogens which can induce severe symptoms including dwarfism, phyllody and virescence in an infected plant. Because phytoplasmas infect many important crops such as peanut and papaya they have caused serious agricultural losses. The phytoplasmal effector causing phyllody 1 (PHYL1) is an important phytoplasmal pathogenic factor which affects the biological function of MADS transcription factors by interacting with their K (keratin-like) domain, thus resulting in abnormal plant developments such as phyllody. Until now, lack of information on the structure of PHY

An important component of cellular biochemistry is the concentration of proteins and nucleic acids in non-membranous compartments1,2. These biomolecular condensates are formed from processes that include liquid-liquid phase separation. The multivalent interactions necessary for liquid-liquid phase separation have been extensively studied in vitro1,3. However, the regulation of this process in vivo is poorly understood. Here we identify an in vivo regulator of liquid-liquid phase separation through a genetic screen targeting factors required for Arabidopsis RNA-binding protein FCA function. FCA

The Smads are a group of related intracellular proteins critical for transmitting the signals to the nucleus from the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) superfamily of proteins at the cell surface. The prototypic members of the Smad family, Mad and Sma, were first described in Drosophila and Caenorhabditis elegans, respectively. Related proteins in Xenopus, Humans, Mice and Rats were subsequently identified, and are now known as Smads. Smad protein family members act downstream in the TGF-beta signaling pathway mediating various biological processes, including cell growth, differentiat

Ovule fertilization initiates fruit set, the transition from a quiescent ovary to a growing ovary (fruit), yet how ovary growth is arrested before fertilization remains poorly understood. Previously, we have shown that the ovaries of the tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) AGAMOUS-like6 (SlAGL6) loss-of-function mutant (slagl6CR-sg1) develop normally until anthesis but nevertheless can set fruits independently of fertilization (parthenocarpy). Here, we demonstrate that SlAGL6 suppresses parthenocarpy specifically from the ovules, as reintroducing SlAGL6 into slagl6CR-sg1 using an ovule-specific prom

Systemic acquired resistance (SAR) is an inducible defense mechanism that systemically enhances resistance against pathogens in foliar tissues. SAR, which engages salicylic acid (SA) signaling, shares molecular components with the autonomous pathway, which is involved in controlling flowering time in Arabidopsis thaliana. FLOWERING LOCUS D (FLD) is one such autonomous pathway component that is required for flowering time and the systemic accumulation of SA during SAR. Here, we show that CYP720A1, a putative cytochrome P450 monoxygenase, controls FLD expression and is required for the timing of

Eukaryotic cold shock domain proteins are nucleic acid-binding proteins that are involved in transcription, translation via RNA chaperone activity, RNA editing, and DNA repair during tissue developmental processes and stress responses. Cold shock domain proteins have been functionally implicated in important developmental transitions, including embryogenesis, in both animals and plants. Arabidopsis thaliana cold shock domain protein 4 (AtCSP4) contains a well conserved cold shock domain (CSD) and glycine-rich motifs interspersed by two retroviral-like CCHC zinc fingers. AtCSP4 is expressed in

Flowering in plants is controlled by internal and environmental signals, with temperature playing a critical role. Accordingly, Arabidopsis thaliana plants show temperature-dependent variation in flowering time. Because unexpected cold periods can occur at any time, plants have evolved mechanisms to detect such cold snaps and delay flowering. Plants are more cold-tolerant in the vegetative stage, whereas flowers are sensitive and often show reduced reproductive success due to damage to floral structures and gametes. At the molecular level, delayed flowering can be caused by repression of the F

Floral homeotic genes, most of them encoding MADS-box transcription factors, are classically pictured as early specifiers of floral organ identity, as implied by the famous ABC model. Yet, floral homeotic genes remain expressed throughout floral organ development, sometimes with a cell-type-specific expression pattern, and late functions have been firmly established for some of these genes. Here, we review how floral homeotic MADS-box genes are expressed in floral organs during their development, highlighting general trends for their spatial- or temporal-specific expression, in particular for

Seasonal growth modulation is a key adaptive trait in perennials that supports overwinter survival. During winter, many perennials adopt a rosette growth habit by suppressing both vegetative extension and flowering, but the mechanism that coordinates these two distinct developmental programs remains unclear. Here, we show that prolonged chilling primarily acts at the shoot apex to confer extension growth and flowering competence in chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium). Long-term chilling is accompanied by marked changes in gene expression in the rib zone of the shoot apex. Notably, the exp

Temperature critically influences flowering time, yet the molecular mechanisms governing this process in perennial woody species remain largely elusive. Based on flowering characteristics, Osmanthus fragrans Lour. can be divided into two major groups: once-flowering types and continuous-flowering types (the Asiaticus group). Among these, the floral transition of continuous-flowering types is precisely regulated by ambient temperature. Here, using O. fragrans 'Sijigui' (a cultivar of the Asiaticus group) as experimental material, we combined phenotypic observation with paraffin sectioning analy

The FOREVER YOUNG FLOWER (FYF/AGL42) gene plays an important role in regulating the flower development especially the flowering time, and senescence and abscission of floral organs. Melon is an important horticultural crop, and the flower development has an important influence on pollination, fertilization and final fruit yield. However, the function of FYF homolog is still unknown in melon. In this study, the characteristic of melon CmFYF was analyzed combining with molecular biology, developmental biology and biochemical tools. CmFYF was present in all detected tissues of melon, but its expr

The balance between parental genome dosage is critical to offspring development in both animals and plants. In some angiosperm species, despite the imbalance between maternally and paternally inherited chromosome sets, crosses between parental lines of different ploidy may result in viable offspring. However, many plant species, like Arabidopsis thaliana, present a post-zygotic reproductive barrier, known as triploid block which results in the inability of crosses between individuals of different ploidy to generate viable seeds but also, in defective development of the seed. Several paternal r

Nitric oxide (NO), a reactive small molecule, plays a critical role in various developmental and physiological processes in living organisms. Previous studies by our group revealed that NO delays flowering in Arabidopsis by increasing transcript levels of the flowering repressor FLOWERING LOCUS C (FLC). In this study, we further investigated the molecular mechanism by which NO regulates FLC expression. Genetic experiments demonstrated that NO-induced delayed flowering specifically depends on elevated FLC transcript levels. Chromatin Immunoprecipitation assays revealed that NO significantly enh

Jujube witches' broom (JWB) is a phytoplasma disease that causes severe damage to jujube (Ziziphus jujuba) crops worldwide. Diseased jujube plants show enhanced vegetative growth after floral reversion, including leafy flower structures (phyllody) and the fourth whorl converting into a vegetative shoot. In previous research, secreted JWB protein 3 (SJP3) was identified as an inducer of phyllody. However, the molecular mechanisms of SJP3-mediated pistil reversion remain unknown. Here, the effector SJP3 was found to interact with the MADS-box protein SHORT VEGETATIVE PHASE 3 (ZjSVP3). ZjSVP3 was

BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and methamphetamine use commonly affect neurocognitive (NC) functioning. We evaluated the relationships between NC functioning and two fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) in volunteers who differed in HIV serostatus and methamphetamine dependence (MAD).
METHODS: A total of 100 volunteers were categorized into four groups based on HIV serostatus and MAD in the prior year. FGF-1 and FGF-2 were measured in cerebrospinal fluid by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays along with two reference biomarkers (monocyte chemotactic protein [MCP]-1 and neopterin).

The labellum, a distinctive floral organ unique to orchids, possesses significant ornamental and research value. Here, wild type plants (W1, W2), a lip-like sepal mutant (MS), a lip-like petal mutant (MP), and a peloric flower mutant (ML) of Cymbidium ensifolium were used to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying labellum formation. Morphological and cytological analyses revealed that MS sepals and MP petals acquired labellum-like traits (folded structures, conical papillae), whereas ML labella adopted petal-like features (flat epidermal cells). Transcriptome analysis identified seven k

AGAMOUS (AG) MADS-box transcription factors have been shown to play crucial roles in floral organ and fruit development in angiosperms. Here, we isolated a tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) AG MADS-box gene SlMBP3 and found that it is preferentially expressed in flowers and during early fruit developmental stages in the wild-type (WT), and in the Nr (never ripe) and rin (ripening inhibitor) mutants. Its transcripts are notably accumulated in the pistils; transcripts abundance decrease during seed and placental development, increasing again during flower development. SlMBP3-RNAi tomato plants displ

BACKGROUND: Thousands of flowering plant species attract pollinators without offering rewards, but the evolution of this deceit is poorly understood. Rewardless flowers of the orchid Erycina pusilla have an enlarged median sepal and incised median petal ('lip') to attract oil-collecting bees. These bees also forage on similar looking but rewarding Malpighiaceae flowers that have five unequally sized petals and gland-carrying sepals. The lip of E. pusilla has a 'callus' that, together with winged 'stelidia', mimics these glands. Different hypotheses exist about the evolutionary origin of the me

Polygonatum, Chinese medicinal and edible plants, are renowned for various health benefits including replenishing Qi, nourishing Yin, moistening the lungs, invigorating the spleen, and benefiting the kidneys. MADS-box genes are widely present in plants and play roles as transcription factors in multiple growth and developmental processes. In this study, 74 MADS-box genes in Polygonatum cyrtonema were identified via bioinformatics methods. These genes were classified into 14 subfamilies, with members of the same subfamily clustering together on the phylogenetic tree and sharing conserved motifs
