Mining MEDLINE for problems associated with vitamin D.

This paper presents a two-step approach to generating comprehensive abstractive overviews for biomedical topics. It starts with a sensitivity-maximizing search of MEDLINE/PubMed and MeSH-based filtering of the results that are then processed using NLP methods to extract relations between entities of interest. We evaluate this approach in a case study based on the IOM report on the role of vitamin D in human health. The report defines disorders that serve as health indicators for the role of vitamin D. We evaluate the abstractive overviews generated using MeSH indexing and the extracted relatio

Schizophrenia in Medline 1950-2006: a bibliometric investigation.

The aim was to perform a bibliometric study, and compare the quantity of publications on schizophrenia with the total medical literature in Medline during 57 years, 1950-2006. The annual additions of literature to Medline are continually increasing and form the Medline growth curve. Comparisons of the number of publications on schizophrenia, or any other disease, to this curve, may be used to estimate the research activity. Methods for the identification of relevant references to papers on schizophrenia were evaluated and three different samples were operationally defined, retrieved and counte

Leveraging MEDLINE indexing for pharmacovigilance - Inherent limitations and mitigation strategies.

BACKGROUND: Traditional approaches to pharmacovigilance center on the signal detection from spontaneous reports, e.g., the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) adverse event reporting system (FAERS). In order to enrich the scientific evidence and enhance the detection of emerging adverse drug events that can lead to unintended harmful outcomes, pharmacovigilance activities need to evolve to encompass novel complementary data streams, for example the biomedical literature available through MEDLINE. OBJECTIVES: (1) To review how the characteristics of MEDLINE indexing influence the identific

A novel algorithm for analyzing drug-drug interactions from MEDLINE literature.

Drug-drug interaction (DDI) is becoming a serious clinical safety issue as the use of multiple medications becomes more common. Searching the MEDLINE database for journal articles related to DDI produces over 330,000 results. It is impossible to read and summarize these references manually. As the volume of biomedical reference in the MEDLINE database continues to expand at a rapid pace, automatic identification of DDIs from literature is becoming increasingly important. In this article, we present a random-sampling-based statistical algorithm to identify possible DDIs and the underlying mecha

Automatically extracting sentences from Medline citations to support clinicians' information needs.

OBJECTIVE: Online health knowledge resources contain answers to most of the information needs raised by clinicians in the course of care. However, significant barriers limit the use of these resources for decision-making, especially clinicians' lack of time. In this study we assessed the feasibility of automatically generating knowledge summaries for a particular clinical topic composed of relevant sentences extracted from Medline citations. METHODS: The proposed approach combines information retrieval and semantic information extraction techniques to identify relevant sentences from Medline

Search strategies (filters) to identify systematic reviews in MEDLINE and Embase.

BACKGROUND: Bibliographic databases provide access to an international body of scientific literature in health and medical sciences. Systematic reviews are an important source of evidence for clinicians, researchers, consumers, and policymakers as they address a specific health-related question and use explicit methods to identify, appraise and synthesize evidence from which conclusions can be drawn and decisions made. Methodological search filters help database end-users search the literature effectively with different levels of sensitivity and specificity. These filters have been developed f

Perusing the literature: comparison of MEDLINE searching with a perinatal trials database.

The existence of a Register of Controlled Trials in Perinatal Medicine (National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit, Oxford, England) has offered an opportunity to assess the efficacy of online searching of MEDLINE, an example of a broad bibliographic database. Retrieval of all relevant randomized control trials (RCTs) in a given field is important in analyses in which results are pooled (meta-analyses). Reports of RCTs of prevention and treatment of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia and prevention of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) for the years 1966-1983 were sought in both the Register and MEDLINE fil

Development and validation of a MEDLINE search filter/hedge for degenerative cervical myelopathy.

BACKGROUND: Degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) is a common condition with many unmet clinical needs. Pooled analysis of studies is an important tool for advancing medical understanding. This process starts with a systematic search of the literature. Identification of studies in DCM is challenged by a number of factors, including non-specific terminology and index terms. Search filters or HEDGEs, are search strings developed and validated to optimise medical literature searches. We aimed to develop a search filter for DCM for the MEDLINE database. METHODS: The diagnostic test assessment fr

Diffuse panbronchiolitis research in MEDLINE (1969-2017): Report of a bibliometric analysis.

BACKGROUND: Given the well documented and undesired impact of diffuse panbronchiolitis (DPB), there is a need to create a statistical inventory of research output on DPB. The aim of this study was to identify and analyze different trends in publication over time, with technological additions. METHODS: Articles indexed in MEDLINE regarding DPB were retrieved using PubMed. Citation results were categorized by article type, year of publication, language, and country. RESULTS: A total of 657 publications, published between 1969 and 2017 were retrieved from PubMed; the year with the highest numbe

How to improve your PubMed/MEDLINE searches: 1. background and basic searching.

PubMed provides free access via the Internet to more than 23 million records, of which over 19 million are from the MEDLINE database of journal articles. PubMed also provides access to other databases, such as the NCBI Bookshelf. To perform a basic search, you can simply enter the search terms or the concept that you are looking for in the search box. However, taking care to clarify your key concepts may save much time later on, because a non-specific search is likely to produce an overwhelming number of result hits. One way to make your search more specific is to specify which field you want

Efficacy of searching in biomedical databases beyond MEDLINE in identifying randomised controlled trials on hyperbaric oxygen treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Literature searches are routinely used by researchers for conducting systematic reviews as well as by healthcare providers, and sometimes patients, to quickly guide their clinical decisions. Using more than one database is generally recommended but may not always be necessary for some fields. This study aimed to determine the added value of searching additional databases beyond MEDLINE when conducting a literature search of hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT) randomised controlled trials (RCTs). METHODS: This study consisted of two phases: a scoping review of all RCTs in the fiel

From Pain Relief to Multidimensional Outcomes: A Structured Narrative Review of Success Language in a PubMed/MEDLINE Spinal Cord Stimulation Corpus.

Background/Objectives: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is usually evaluated through pain relief, yet the published language of therapeutic success is broader. This structured narrative review examined success language in the SCS literature to map how outcome terminology has accumulated across domains. Methods: A PubMed/MEDLINE corpus was retrieved on 23 May 2026 using the strategy ("Spinal Cord Stimulation"[Mesh] OR "Spinal Cord Stimulation"[Title/Abstract]). The search returned 5719 records from 1961 to 2026. Title-and-abstract screening was performed independently by two authors, with pre-cons
