Microvasculature of the olfactory organ in the Japanese monkey (Macaca fuscata fuscata).

Olfaction is an important and primitive sense. As its importance has changed with evolution, anatomic adjustments have occurred in its structure and vasculature. Primates are a family of vertebrates that have had to develop their visual system to adapt to the arboreal environment and have evolved from a macrosmatic to a microsmatic species as the optic system has enlarged. This has resulted in anatomic changes of a small but critical area at the base of the brain. This paper describes the three-dimensional vascular anatomy of the olfactory organ of the Japanese monkey (Macaca fuscata fuscata).

Intra-group variations in the dental eruption sequence of Macaca fuscata fuscata.

The purpose of this investigation was to establish general trends of intra-group variations in the dental eruption sequence of a semi-wild troop of Maca fuscata fuscata. Dental impressions were taken on 128 animals of varying ages. The analysis of the dental casts revealed sexual dimorphism in sequence and timing of eruption.

Asbestosis in a Japanese Macaque (Macaca fuscata).

Asbestosis is a chronic lung disease caused by inhalation of asbestos, a fibrous mineral. It is one of the most severe diseases resulting from environmental contamination. We found asbestosis in a female Japanese macaque over 25 years of age that died from senility. Clear needle-like crystals were deposited throughout the lung lobes, particularly in the perivascular areas. Asbestos bodies were observed in some of these crystals. Fibrosis without inflammation was observed in the periarterial and peribronchiolar regions. The crystals were identified as tremolite, and a total of 16,633,968 asbest

Tetralogy of fallot in a Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata).

Only a few case reports have described heart diseases in monkeys, and most cases have involved postmortem diagnosis. A newborn female Japanese macaque showed weakness immediately after birth and died 1 d thereafter. Necropsy revealed that the animal had tetralogy of Fallot and patent ductus arteriosus. This report is the first description of tetralogy of Fallot in a monkey.

Progression of phosphorylated α-synuclein in Macaca fuscata.

Prion-like spreading of abnormal proteins is proposed to occur in neurodegenerative diseases, and the progression of α-synuclein (α-syn) deposits has been reported in the brains of animal models injected with synthetic α-syn fibrils or pathological α-syn prepared from patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). However, α-syn transmission in nonhuman primates, which are more similar to humans, has not been fully clarified. Here, we injected synthetic human α-syn fibrils into the left striatum of a macaque monkey (Macaca fuscata). At 3 months after the injection,

Congenital malformations in Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) at Takasakiyama.

From the late 1960s to the early 1970s, many congenitally malformed infants were born into provisioned Japanese macaque troops. Although the exact cause of this problem was not determined, the occurrence of malformations decreased thereafter. We examined possible factors such as total population size, number of adult females, birth rate, and volume of provisioned food. Agrichemicals attached to provisioned food are suspected as the main cause, as other factors were found to have no influence. Many more malformations were seen in males compared with females, in feet compared with hands, and in

Differences in the morphology of the maxillary sinus and roots of teeth between Macaca fuscata and Macaca fuscata yakui determined using cone beam computed tomography.

The Japanese macaque is an endemic species consisting of two subspecies: Macaca fuscata fuscata (MFF) and Macaca fuscata yakui (MFY). The MFY is indigenous to Yakushima Island and represents a subspecies of MFF that lives from Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu, Japan. However, the differences in the skulls of the MFY and MFF are unknown, despite these subspecies having different skull sizes. The maxillary sinus (MS) indicates that the features of the frontal view reflect the transversal growth of the maxilla of the skull. In this study, we show the MS structures of the MFF (n = 9, 18 sides) and MFY

A role of amygdala in visual perception and cognition in macaque monkeys (Macaca fuscata and Macaca mulatta).

To elucidate the role of the amygdala in visual perception and cognition, the effects of ablations of the amygdala and inferotemporal cortex on several visual tasks were compared with each other, and also the distribution patterns of the projections between them were investigated. The findings indicate that the inferotemporal cortex plays a critical role in visual perception, cognition and memory, whereas the amygdala is involved fundamentally in controlling emotional and motivational behavior. However, the amygdala is concerned with vision in the following ways: It receives neutral visual inf

Japanese Macaques (Macaca fuscata) as Natural Reservoir of Bartonella quintana.

Bartonella quintana bacteremia was detected in 6 (13.3%) of 45 wild-caught Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata). Multilocus sequence typing of the isolates revealed that Japanese macaques were infected with a new and specific B. quintana sequence type. Free-ranging Japanese macaques thus represent another natural reservoir of B. quintana.

Characterization of spontaneous malignant lymphomas in Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata).

Lymphomas are common spontaneous tumors in nonhuman primates but remain poorly characterized in Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata). This study examined 5 cases of spontaneous malignant lymphoma in Japanese macaques, focusing on the immunophenotypes and presence of simian lymphocryptoviruses, which are Epstein-Barr virus-related herpesviruses in nonhuman primates. The macaques with lymphoma were 5 to 28 years old, indicating that lymphomas develop over a wide age range. The common macroscopic findings were splenomegaly and enlargement of lymph nodes. Histologic and immunohistochemical analyses

Kinematic adjustments to arboreal locomotion in Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata).

Although biomechanical adaptations to arboreal locomotion have been well investigated in primates and other mammals in laboratory settings, the results are not consistent, and more species need to be studied to build a comprehensive picture of this. Here, we used three-dimensional videography to quantify kinematic parameters thought to be associated with locomotor stability while two Japanese macaques walked on terrestrial and simulated arboreal substrates (a horizontal pole, which was narrow relative to the animal's body width). The parameters investigated included temporal-spatial gait varia

Urothelial carcinoma in the urinary bladder of a Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata).

Tumors of urinary origin are infrequently reported in non-human primates. Urothelial carcinoma involving the urinary bladder was diagnosed in an adult female Japanese macaque that extended transmurally to the uterus and cervix. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a primary cystic urothelial carcinoma in a Japanese macaque.

Retinopetal neurons located in the diencephalon of the Japanese monkey (Macaca fuscata).

After a monocular injection of the cholera toxin B subunit (CTB) into the vitreous chamber of one eye, the retrogradely labeled retinopetal neurons were studied in the diencephalon of the Japanese monkey. The retrogradely transported tracer was visualized using the peroxidase antibody technique and an anti-cholera toxin antibody. The CTB-labeled nerve cell bodies were scattered in the periventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus, lateral hypothalamic area, and midline nuclei of the thalamus on both sides. In addition, a few retrogradely labeled nerve somata were observed in the most rostral por

Subcutaneous malignant mast cell tumor in a Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata).

The histopathological, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural morphologic characteristics of a tumor in the subcutaneous tissue of the chest of a 19-year-old female Japanese macaque were investigated. Consequently, the mass was diagnosed as a malignant mast cell tumor (MCT). Tumors were present in both mammary gland portions of the anterior thorax. Both tumors showed the same histopathological findings. The tumor tissue was defined by the presence of delicate connective tissue, and the tumor cells grew in a cord-like or cobblestone pattern. The tumor cell cytoplasm was very clear. The nuclei

Cellular localization of NGF and its receptors trkA and p75LNGFR in male reproductive organs of the Japanese monkey, Macaca fuscata fuscata.

The actions of neurotropins are not restricted to the nervous system. Immunohistochemical methods were used in the present study to clarify distribution of nerve growth factor (NGF) and its receptors TrkA and p75LNGFR in excurrent ducts of the adult male Japanese monkey (Macaca fuscata fuscata). NGF was found in the seminal vesicle, epididymis, and testis, and has been thought to affect male reproductive functions. Leydig cells, Sertoli cells, and spermatogonia at various stages were positively stained for NGF, as well as for TrkA and p75LNGFR. Signals for these proteins were also found in epi

Cerebromalacia with epilepsy and cortical blindness in a laboratory Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata).

The authors performed a pathological examination of a 5-year-old female laboratory Japanese monkey who developed cortical blindness and epileptic seizures. Generalized, tonic-clonic seizures started to occur during behavioral training to get the animal to enter a carrying cage for future psychological experiments. Blindness was suspected because of a lack of approaching behavior toward foods such as fruits. Although the monkey was extensively treated with anticonvulsants, the clinical signs did not improve. An increased serum creatine phosphokinase (CPK) level and bilateral occipital brain atr

Immunohistochemical localization of kallikrein in salivary glands of the Japanese monkey, Macaca fuscata.

The immunofluorescence staining using anti-human urinary kallikrein polyclonal antiserum was intense in the luminal rim of the striated duct cells, but decreased in the excretory duct cells and was weak in the intercalated duct cells. Western blot analysis demonstrated the monospecificity of the antiserum to glandular kallikrein in Macaca submandibular gland homogenate. The staining was observed to a similar degree as that in salivary glands with long and numerous striated ducts in the following order: the submandibular, the parotid and the sublingual gland. These findings suggest that kallikr
