International journal for parasitology. Parasites and wildlife2021eng
Toxoplasma gondii is a worldwide occurring apicomplexan parasite. Due to its high seroprevalence in livestock as well as in game animals, T. gondii is an important food-borne pathogen and can have significant health implications for humans as well as for pets. This article describes the prevalence of T. gondii in free-ranging macropods hunted for consumption. All hunted macropod species (commercial as well as non-commercial hunt) show a positive seroprevalence for T. gondii. This seroprevalence is influenced by various factors, such as sex or habitat. Furthermore, the parasite shows a high lev

Low (2.28 mg/kg) or high (4.56 mg/kg) doses of cadmium chloride were administered, either intraperitoneally or subcutaneously, to adult male potoroos (P. tridactylus). After 7 days, the testes, caput epididymis and spermatic cords of the high-dose groups all displayed a degree of cellular damage; however, the damage was not as extensive as that which occurs in some eutherian species after only 24 h. This time differential might be attributed to structural differences between the testicular blood supply in eutherians and marsupials.

Morphometric cardiac reference values are reported for macropods and koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus). Body weight (BW), heart weight (HW), left ventricle (LV) wall, interventricular septum (S), right ventricle (RV) wall thickness, and LV+S and RV weights were measured at postmortem examination of 48 macropods and 32 koalas that had no evidence of cardiovascular disease. The HW/BW% (0.43-0.96%) and (LV+S)/RV (2.80-4.22) for macropods were comparable to domestic species. In koalas, the HW/BW% (0.25-0.51%) was lower, and the (LV+S)/RV (3.06-5.41) ranged higher than in macropods and domestic speci

The gastrointestinal helminth parasites of 170 common wallaroos or euros, Osphranter robustus (Gould), collected from all mainland states in which the species occurs as well as the Northern Territory, are presented, including previously published data. A total of 65 species of helminths were encountered, including four species of anoplocephalid cestodes found in the bile ducts and small intestine, and 61 species of strongylid nematodes, all but two of which occurring in the stomach, and with the remainder occurring in the terminal ileum, caecum and colon. Among the mainland subspecies of O. ro

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate electro-ejaculation of free-range eastern grey kangaroos in the field and assess the efficacy of four diluents to preserve sperm motility over a 48-h period at 5 degrees C. PROCEDURE AND DESIGN: Under gaseous anaesthesia, 25 free-range kangaroos were electro-ejaculated and characteristics of the ejaculate noted. Spermatozoa obtained from eight ejaculates were diluted in phosphate buffered saline containing various combinations of egg yolk and glucose and refrigerated at 5 degrees C for 48 h.
RESULTS: Spermatozoa were recovered from 24 of 28 ejaculates. Mean (+/- SEM) s

Three new species of the parasitic nematode genus Cloacina von Linstow, 1898 (Strongyloidea: Cloacininae) are described from the stomachs of wallaroos, Osphranter spp. (Marsupialia: Macropodidae), from northern Australia. Cloacina spearei n. sp. is described from O. robustus woodwardi (Thomas) and O. antilopinus (Gould) and is distinguished from congeners by the shape of the cephalic papillae, the shallow buccal capsule, the presence of an oesophageal denticle and the convoluted but non-recurrent vagina in the female. Cloacina longibursata n. sp. also from O. robustus woodwardi and O. antilopi

Specimens of Cloacina artemis, C. expansa, C. hera, C. hermes, C. hestia, C. magnipapillata, C. obtusa and C. selene, which occur in both of the closely related species of grey kangaroos, Macropus fuliginosus and M. giganteus, were found to differ genetically based on sequence data derived from the internal transcribed spacers (ITS-1, ITS-2) of ribosomal DNA. The extent of differences varied from a single base pair in C. expansa, to 32 in C. hestia. In the case of C. hera, C. hestia and C. magnipapillata, separate genotypes were found in M. fuliginosus and M. giganteus. With C. artemis, C. exp

CNS lesions associated with chronic otitis have not been reported in red kangaroos (Macropus rufus), to our knowledge. Here we describe an intracranial inflammatory polyp secondary to chronic otitis in a 6-y-old female red kangaroo with right auricular discharge, loss of balance, and head tilt. Autopsy highlighted a pale-yellow, firm, intracranial polypoid growth that extended from the right tympanic cavity through the internal acoustic meatus and intracranially, with compression of the right cerebellopontine angle. Anaerobic bacterial culture yielded Bacteroides pyogenes from fresh brain and

As an animal grows, the relative sizes of their organs may grow proportionately or disproportionately, depending on ontogenetic changes in function. If organ growth is proportional (isometric), then the exponent of the scaling equation is 1.0. Relative decreases or increases in size result in exponents less than 1 (hypoallometric) or greater than 1 (hyperallometric). Thus, the empirical exponent can indicate potential changes in function. The entire gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of the foregut-fermenting western grey kangaroo Macropus fuliginosus melanops exhibited biphasic allometry across fiv

Understanding the origin and fate of sex chromosomes has been one of the most intriguing questions in biology. In therian (marsupial and eutherian) mammals, most species are characterized by a heteromorphic XX female XY male sex chromosome system. It is commonly accepted that they originated from a pair of autosomes after gaining a sex-determining function, leading to recombination suppression and subsequent Y chromosome degeneration. Unlike eutherian sex chromosomes which share a pseudo-autosomal region (PAR), the marsupial sex chromosomes are typically tiny and lack any homology. However, th

Hypospadias is increasingly common, and requires surgery to repair, but its aetiology is poorly understood. The marsupial tammar wallaby provides a unique opportunity to study hypospadias because penile differentiation occurs postnatally. Androgens are responsible for penile development in the tammar, but the majority of differentiation, in particular formation and closure of the urethral groove forming the penile urethra in males, occurs when there is no measurable sex difference in the concentrations of testosterone or dihydrotestosterone in either the gonads or the circulation [corrected].

The extinct sthenurine (giant, short-faced) kangaroos have been proposed to have a different type of locomotor behavior to extant (macropodine) kangaroos, based both on physical limitations (the size of many exceeds the proposed limit for hopping) and anatomical features (features of the hind limb anatomy suggestive of weight-bearing on one leg at a time). Here, we use micro computerised tomography (micro-CT) scans of the pedal bones of six kangaroos, three sthenurine, and three macropodine, ranging from ~50 to 150 kg, to investigate possible differences in bone resistances to bending and cort

Polydactyly is a congenital malformation resulting from an autosomal dominant mutation manifesting as supernumerary digits of the hands or feet. It is most commonly reported in humans and domestic mammals, though there have also been isolated examples across a range of wild vertebrate species. Here we report a case of extremely unusual bilateral preaxial polydactyly on the pectoral limbs of a male western grey kangaroo (Macropus fuliginosus) from the South West region of Western Australia, in which two supernumerary digits were present on each manus. A supernumerary digit I on each manus was r

Bacteria of the family Enterobacteriaceae were isolated from 642 mammalian hosts, representing 16 families and 79 species, collected from throughout Australia. Escherichia coli was the most common of the 24 enteric species recovered and represented almost half of the isolates. Association analysis revealed that most other species of bacteria were less likely to be recovered from hosts in which E. coli was present. The composition of the enteric community of a host was found to be determined by both the taxonomic family to which the host belonged and the geographical area from which the host wa

Infection with the introduced trematode Fasciola hepatica was associated with anemia, mild to moderate azotemia, hypoalbuminemia, and elevated liver enzymes and creatine kinase values in two free-ranging eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus). Both kangaroos were euthanized because of the severity of clinical signs associated with infection. Histopathologic changes included severe cholangiohepatitis, biliary hyperplasia, and fibrosis. Hepatic, splenic, and intestinal amyloidosis was present in one kangaroo and hepatic abscessation in the other; neither histologic change has been reported

Scavengers play a key role in recycling animal biomass, yet the relative contributions of insects and vertebrates to this process remain poorly understood. Moreover, understanding whether one scavenger group can compensate for the absence of another is critical for predicting how carrion decomposition may respond to changes in community composition or seasonal conditions. To address this, we assessed the capacity of scavenging insects and facultative vertebrate scavengers to recycle animal biomass in alpine Australia. We measured carcass persistence (decay rates) of 64 eastern gray kangaroos (

BACKGROUND: Neoplasia is considered to be rare in macropods. Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) also known as undifferentiated or giant cell carcinoma, is a rare but aggressive and lethal solid tumour reported to affect humans, dogs, cats, racoons and birds. It is derived from poorly differentiated follicular cells and lacks the characteristic architectural pattern of arrangement of tumour cells. ATC has not previously been reported in macropods.
CASE REPORT: A brush-tailed rock-wallaby (Petrogale penicillata) was presented for a mass on the ventral neck. A clinical diagnosis of thyroid carci

Three new species of Cloacininae are described from Dorcopsis muelleri obtained from Salawati Island and Kaimana, Papua. Cloacina woworae sp. nov. differs from all congeners by having postero-lateral and medio-lateral rays not fused and the esophagus wider anterior to the nerve ring. Compared to its congeners, C. beveridgei sp. nov. resembles C. caballeroi Mawson, 1977, C. cretheis Beveridge, 2002, C. erigone Beveridge, 2002, and C. syphax Beveridge Speare, 1999 in the morphology of the dorsal ray. However, C. beveridgei has distal segments of sub-median papillae longer than the proximal segm
