The use of iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (IMNP) in medical and pharmaceutical areas dates to the beginning of the 1970s, as carriers. Some other uses to these nanoparticles are in vitro separation, magnetic resonance imaging and drug targeting agent. Many preparations containing IMNP have been described and used in drug delivery, hyperthermia, in vitro separation, tissue repair, cellular therapy, for magnetic separation, magnetic resonance imaging, as spoilers for magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and more recently as sensors for metabolites and other biomolecules. The use of these nanostru

We present the studies of structural and magnetic properties of graphene composites prepared with several quantities ofα-Fe2O3dopant of 5%, 25% and 50% made with either ethanol or acetone. Our studies showed the presence of a weak magnetic order up to room temperature and saturation magnetization close to 0.2 emu g-1in pure commercial graphene. With regard to magnetic properties of our graphene + iron oxide samples, the solvent used during the preparation of the composite had a significant influence on them. For graphene + Fe2O3samples made with acetone the magnetic properties of pure graphene

A targeted drug delivery system is the need of the hour. Guiding magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles with the help of an external magnetic field to its target is the principle behind the development of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) as novel drug delivery vehicles. SPIONs are small synthetic γ-Fe₂O₃ (maghemite) or Fe₃O₄ (magnetite) particles with a core ranging between 10 nm and 100 nm in diameter. These magnetic particles are coated with certain biocompatible polymers, such as dextran or polyethylene glycol, which provide chemical handles for the conjugation of therapeutic

In oral infectious diseases, recalcitrant biofilms, escalating antibiotic resistance, and limitations of local drug delivery within complex anatomical microenvironments necessitate innovative strategies for effective and precise therapy. Among magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), iron oxide-based nanoparticles (IONPs) have attracted considerable attention in the management of oral infectious diseases because of their unique physicochemical features, including magnetic responsiveness, tunable morphology, and favorable biocompatibility. These properties enable MNPs to exert multimodal antibacterial ef

The unique properties of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles determined their widespread use in medical applications, the food industry, textile industry, which in turn led to environmental pollution. These factors determine the long-term nature of the effect of iron oxide nanoparticles on the body. However, studies in the field of chronic nanotoxicology of magnetic iron particles are insufficient and scattered. Studies show that toxicity may be increased depending on oral and inhalation routes of administration rather than injection. The sensory nerve pathway can produce a number of specific ef

Magnetic nanoparticles can transport drug and possibly target cancer. DNA-binding of ligands loaded in dextran coated magnetic nanoparticles, could aid their better target-specific binding. In this work, we report the loading of chromenones onto aminoethylamino-modified dextran coated iron oxide nanoparticles, their loading efficiency, and openness for binding to DNA. The magnetic behavior, the size, and the morphology of the nanoparticles are analyzed. The crystallite size of the magnetic nanoparticles is around 40 nm. The chromenones are present on the surface of the dextran shell, as reveal

This study aimed to systematically understand the magnetic properties of magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles functionalized with different Pluronic F-127 surfactant concentrations (Fe3O4@Pluronic F-127) obtained by using an improved magnetic characterization method based on three-dimensional magnetic maps generated by scanning magnetic microscopy. Additionally, these Fe3O4 and Fe3O4@Pluronic F-127 nanoparticles, as promising systems for biomedical applications, were prepared by a wet chemical reaction. The magnetization curve was obtained through these three-dimensional maps, confirming that both

This work aims to synthesize polygalacturonate-based magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (INP-polyGalA). The synthesis consists of the diffusion of both Fe2+ and Fe3+ at a molar ratio of 1:2 through polyGalA solution followed by the addition of an alkaline solution. To form individual nanoparticle materials, the polyGalA concentration needs to be below its overlapping concentration (C*). The synthesized materials (INP-polyGalA) contain about 45% of organic compound (polyGalA), and they have an average particle size ranging from 10 to 50 nm as estimated by several techniques (DLS, TEM and AFM) an

It is essential to determine the biodistribution, clearance, and biocompatibility of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) for in vivo biomedical applications to ensure their safe clinical use. We have studied these aspects with our novel iron oxide MNP formulation, which can be used as a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) agent and a drug carrier system. Changes in serum and tissue iron levels were analyzed over 3 weeks after intravenous administration of MNPs to rats. Serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (AKP) levels, and total iron-binding capac

Magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe-NP) are currently considered for various diagnostic and therapeutic applications in the brain. However, little is known on the accumulation and biocompatibility of such particles in brain cells. We have synthesized and characterized dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) coated Fe-NP and have investigated their uptake by cultured brain astrocytes. DMSA-coated Fe-NP that were dispersed in physiological medium had an average hydrodynamic diameter of about 60 nm. Incubation of cultured astrocytes with these Fe-NP caused a time- and concentration-dependent accumulatio

Microplastics are able to pass through many filtration systems due to their small sizes, making it difficult to remove them from, for example, water. In this study, we evaluated the ability of using magnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles to achieve the adsorptive removal of micron-sized polystyrene (microPS) particles. Application of a magnet for 3 min to an aqueous sample of microPS particles mixed with iron oxide nanoparticles for 1 min was able to effectively remove the microPS particles from the water. Transmission electron microscopy images of such samples showed the formation of Fe3O4

Superparamagnetic iron oxide core-shell particles with average sizes of 10 and 14 nm were synthesized by thermal decomposition of an iron oleate precursor in a high-boiling solvent. Sodium oleate was used as surfactant to produce cubic particles. The particles show a wustite (FeO) structure in the core and spinel structures of maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) or magnetite (Fe3O4) in the shell. Due to interfacial coupling of the antiferromagnetic core to the ferrimagnetic shell, the particles exhibit a pronounced exchange bias (EB) effect, resulting in a shifted hysteresis loop when measured below the super

Surface-active and water-soluble magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized in the presence of a series of amphiphilic molecules of different functional groups to determine the hemolytic response and their ability to extract blood cells across the interface and aqueous bulk while maintaining minimum hemolysis. Amphiphilic molecules such as Gemini surfactants of strong hydrophobicity and low hydrophilic-lipophilic balance produced surface-active magnetic NPs, which were highly cytotoxic even when placed at the blood suspension (aqueous)-air interface. A similar behavior was shown by water-so

Challenges remain in precisely diagnosing the progress of liver fibrosis in a noninvasive way. We here synthesized small (4 nm) heterogeneous iron oxide/dysprosium oxide nanoparticles (IO-DyO NPs) as a contrast agent (CA) for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to precisely diagnose liver fibrosis in vivo at both 7.0 and 9.4 T field strength. Our IO-DyO NPs can target the liver and show an increased T2 relaxivity along with an increase of magnetic field strength. At a ultrahigh magnetic field, IO-DyO NPs can significantly improve spatial/temporal image resolution and signal-to-noise ratio of the

OBJECTIVE: Toxicity from off-target heating with magnetic hyperthermia (MHT) is generally assumed to be understood. MHT research focuses on development of more potent heating magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (MIONs), yet our understanding of factors that define biodistribution following systemic delivery remains limited. Preclinical development relies on mouse models, thus understanding off-target heating with MHT in mice provides critical knowledge for clinical development.
METHODS: Eight-week old female nude mice received a single tail vein injection of bionized nanoferrite (BNF) MIONs or
