[Magnetic resonance angiography].

INTRODUCTION: MR angiography (MRA) is a group of MRI techniques capable of producing projectional images of arteries and veins without the use of ionising radiation or catheters. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This review describes two of the main techniques, time-of-flight (TOF) MRA and phase contrast MRA, that provide high signal-intensity vessels due to flow phenomena, and a third main technique, contrast-enhanced MRA, which relies on intravenous injection of contrast media. Contrary to the iodine-containing x-ray contrast media, the contrast media for MRA are not nephrotoxic, making contrast-enhan

[Magnetic resonance angiography].

Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) is a non invasive method for studying the morphology and the hemodynamic of vessels. MRA is becoming well-established for aorta examination and has replaced aortography. MRA is very competitive in screening for renovascular hypertension, intracranial aneurysm, for evaluation of the carotid bifurcation and diagnosis of venous sinus thrombosis. In the future, clinical applications will include pulmonary and coronary arteries.

Magnetic resonance angiography.

The field of MRA has progressed to a stage at which several clinical applications are of obvious value, including the diagnosis of cerebral aneurysms, venous disorders and disease of the carotid bifurcation. Additionally spin echo images are useful in studying the parenchyma and this together with MRA works to be an excellent diagnostic package in the presurgical workup of patients with cerebral vascular abnormalities. With further technical improvements, it seems likely that important applications of MRA will also be found in the diagnosis of peripheral artery disease, stenosis of the renal a

Coronary magnetic resonance angiography.

Coronary magnetic resonance angiography (CMRA) is a technique in clinical evolution. Current clinical applications include assessment for coronary anomalies, aneurysms, bypass graft patency, and, in experienced centers, the exclusion of proximal and multivessel coronary artery disease (CAD). As local expertise increases and more extensive multicenter data become available, additional applications will be established. CMRA promises to supplement and in some cases obviate the need for X-ray contrast angiography, and to expand our understanding of the pathophysiology of CAD.

Abdominal Magnetic Resonance Angiography.

MR imaging hardware and software improvements have led to new applications for contrast-enhanced and noncontrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography in the abdomen and pelvis. Higher magnetic field strength MR imaging scanners have greater signal-to-noise ratio and contrast-to-noise ratio, which is used to improve spatial resolution or temporal resolution for these techniques. New noncontrast-enhanced sequences offer high-resolution magnetic resonance angiography without contrast and provide additional hemodynamic information. Magnetic resonance angiography is particularly well suited to i

Coronary magnetic resonance angiography.

Despite advances in both prevention and treatment, cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. The current gold standard for the diagnosis of coronary artery disease is the x-ray coronary angiogram, which is both costly and associated with a small risk of morbidity. More than 1 million Americans are referred for this test annually, and despite the availability of numerous noninvasive tests to identify patients with coronary artery disease, > or =35% of patients referred for this test are found not to have disease. It therefore would be bene

[Artifacts in magnetic resonance angiography].

Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) has become a major tool in the management of vascular diseases. However, many artifacts that may lead to misinterpretations are encountered with this imaging modality. The purpose of this paper was to enumerate, explain and illustrate each kind of artifact encountered with "time of flight" or "phase contrast" imaging methods. For each artifact, we tried to provide one or several techniques to minimize its consequences.

Magnetic resonance angiography in trauma.

Following blunt or penetrating trauma to the head and neck, a variety of traumatic vascular injuries may occur. Often the clinical presentation of a craniocervical arterial injury is delayed and neuroimaging studies are necessary to evaluate for delayed findings of intracranial infarction or hemorrhage. In this setting, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) may allow a prompt noninvasive diagnosis of craniocervical vascular injury. MRA may be helpful in selecting those patients requiring conventional angiography and allows a noninvasive follow-up evaluation

Magnetic resonance angiography in prostatodynia.

Three-dimensional magnetic resonance venography (3D MRV) of the prostate and the pelvic cavity was demonstrated in 8 normal subjects and 12 patients with prostatodynia. In all normal subjects and patients, 3D MRV images were successfully obtained. The deep dorsal vein of the penis sends major branches into the anterior and lateral capsular veins as well as into the internal pudendal vein. In patients with prostatodynia, the anterior and lateral capsular veins were much thicker in diameter than those in normal subjects, suggesting venous congestion. This congestion was also remarkable in the ve

Magnetic resonance angiography of the kidney.

Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) of the kidneys has become a clinical standard for detecting renal artery stenosis. This test is performed by injecting a bolus of a gadolinium chelate and scanning with a three-dimensional volumetric data collection sensitized to the T1 shortening effects of gadolinium. In addition to displaying the renal arterial anatomy, atherosclerosis within the aorta and iliac arteries is commonly depicted. MRA is a time efficient and safe test when compared with conventional arteriography. Gadolinium-enhanced MRA has proven to have a high sensitivity for detecting ste

[Neoplasms of the glomus caroticum: magnetic resonance angiography versus magnetic resonance].

This work was aimed at investigating the diagnostic role of Magnetic Resonance angiography (MRA) versus spin-echo images in the study of carotid paragangliomas. Ten patients affected with carotid paragangliomas were studied; surgery was the gold standard. MR examinations were performed with a superconductive 1.5 T magnet and a linear head coil. T1-weighted (TR 500 ms, TE 15 ms, 256 x 256 matrix) and T2-weighted (TR 2000 ms, TE 15/90 ms, 256 x 256 matrix) spin-echo sequences were acquired. TOF 3D (flash: FA 25 degrees, TR 30 ms, TE 7 ms) MRA images were acquired; coronal and sagittal images wer

Magnetic resonance angiography in neck masses.

Carotid MR angiography has primarily been used to evaluate for stenotic lesions. We performed 2D time of flight MR angiography in 25 patients with palpable neck masses. There were 23 masses confirmed histologically. Two of the masses represented abnormal carotid arteries. Carotid deviation was seen in 23 of 25 (92%) of patients. Widening of the carotid bifurcation was identified in seven patients, including four carotid body tumors, one inflammatory mass, one benign salivary gland tumor, and one schwannoma. Increased vascularity was identified in one carotid body tumor and in one metastatic pa

Magnetic resonance angiography in moyamoya disease.

Spontaneous occlusion of the circle of Willis, i.e., moyamoya disease (MMD), is a clinical disease entity angiographically characterized by progressive and bilateral stenosis of the carotid bifurcation, with a hazy collateral network at the base or convexity of the brain. Although the importance of computed tomography (CT) and conventional magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in diagnosing MMD has already been determined, conventional arteriography is still regarded as necessary for definitive diagnosis. Magnetic resonance angiography (MR-A) is a very recent vascular imaging technique which allows

[Diagnostic pitfalls in magnetic resonance angiography].

The authors report on their clinical experience with Magnetic Resonance angiography (MRA) pitfalls. January, 1989, to February, 1995, six hundred MRA examinations were performed in different vascular districts, with a 1.5-T superconductive magnet, the time-of-flight (TOF) technique and 2D and 3D acquisitions. Intracranial arteries, epiaortic vessels and renal arteries were studied with FISP 3D sequences; intracranial veins, thoracic vessels, vena cava and pelvic vessels were studied with FISP 2D sequences. Pitfalls were observed in 56 of 600 MRA exams (9.3%). Of 56 pitfalls, 26 (46.4%) were in

Magnetic resonance angiography: current clinical applications.

Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) is the newest non-invasive procedure for the evaluation of the vascular system. The basis to obtain images of vessels from Magnetic Resonance (MR) data rely upon the specific signal alteration determined by flowing blood. By using special techniques only these signals are evidenced, with cancelling of the surrounding stationary tissues. Clinical applications are reviewed in this paper. They include: Evaluation of intracranial vessels with important adjunct information to those obtained by conventional MR images; Definition of cerebrovascular disease includi
