Facilitating extracellular respiration of Methanosarcina barkeri with magnetite nanoparticle: Formation of conductive magnetite nanoparticle-membrane complex.

Extracellular electron transfer (EET) by type I Methanosarcina is relevant to bioenergy recovery, greenhouse gas emissions, environmental remediation and metal corrosion. However, its extracellular respiration is limited by low methanophenazine (MP) levels in the cell membrane, resulting in poor conductivity and restricted electron flux. Here, we grew Methanosarcina barkeri, the most studied species in type I Methanosarcina, with methanol as a sole electron donor and anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS) as a sole electron acceptor. Nearly all AQDS was reduced in the presence of magnetite nanop

Fortification of water kefir with magnetite nanoparticles.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the suitability of incorporating Fe3O4 (magnetite, M) NPs into water kefir (wKef) beverages. Magnetite NPs were synthesized and coated with pectins (cM), and incorporated into wKef beverages obtained by fermentation of a muscovado sugar solution with wKef grains. FeSO4, usually employed as fortifier, was used as a control. Four different beverages were analyzed: wKef, wKef-cM, wKef-M, wKef-FeSO4, indicating wKef beverages fortified with cM, M or FeSO4, respectively. Their stability was assessed by determining the viability of total lactic acid bacteria and

Microbial preparation of metal-substituted magnetite nanoparticles.

A microbial process that exploits the ability of iron-reducing microorganisms to produce copious amounts of extra-cellular metal (M)-substituted magnetite nanoparticles using akaganeite and dopants of dissolved form has previously been reported. The objectives of this study were to develop methods for producing M-substituted magnetite nanoparticles with a high rate of metal substitution by biological processes and to identify factors affecting the production of nano-crystals. The thermophilic and psychrotolerant iron-reducing bacteria had the ability to form M-substituted magnetite nano-crysta

Magnetite nanoparticle interactions with insulin amyloid fibrils.

Accumulation of amyloid fibrils is one of the likely key factors leading to the development of Alzheimer's disease and other amyloidosis associated diseases. Magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) have been developed as promising medical materials for many medical applications. In this study, we have explored the effects of Fe3O4 NPs on the fibrillogenesis process of insulin fibrils. When Fe3O4 NPs were co-incubated with insulin, Fe3O4 NPs had no effect on the structural transformation into amyloid-like fibrils but had higher affinity toward insulin fibrils. We demonstrated that the zeta potential of in

Magnetic dipole imaging of magnetite nanoparticles in brain tissue.

The human brain contains magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles in the form of magnetite (Fe3O4); however, the origin and physiological implications of these crystals remain debated. Due to their low concentrations in brain tissue (∼1-20 ng g-1), the identification and characterization of individual magnetic particles require nanometer-scale spatial resolution over large scan volumes. In contrast to conventional electron microscopy techniques that have field of views typically on micron scales, the Quantum Diamond Microscope (QDM), based on wide-field nitrogen-vacancy center imaging, can generate m

Deposition of anatase titania onto carbon encapsulated magnetite nanoparticles.

A novel magnetically separable photocatalyst (titania-coated carbon encapsulated magnetite: TCCEF) was prepared. The prepared composite photocatalyst was characterized with an x-ray diffractometer (XRD), a transmission electron microscope (TEM), a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR) and a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The photocatalytic activity of the samples was determined by degrading model contaminated water, a phenol aqueous solution. The results were compared with single-phase titania (pure titania and Degussa P25) and Fe(3)O(4)/TiO(2), and enhanced photocatalytic acti

Experimental Evolution of Magnetite Nanoparticle Resistance in Escherichia coli.

Both ionic and nanoparticle iron have been proposed as materials to control multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria. However, the potential bacteria to evolve resistance to nanoparticle bacteria remains unexplored. To this end, experimental evolution was utilized to produce five magnetite nanoparticle-resistant (FeNP1-5) populations of Escherichia coli. The control populations were not exposed to magnetite nanoparticles. The 24-h growth of these replicates was evaluated in the presence of increasing concentrations magnetite NPs as well as other ionic metals (gallium III, iron II, iron III, and silv

Induction of Cell Death in Mesothelioma Cells by Magnetite Nanoparticles.

Nanoparticle uptake and cell death following addition of magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) with a diameter of ∼10 nm were evaluated in three histological types of human mesothelioma cells, NCI-H28 (epithelioid), NCI-H2052 (sarcomatoid), and MSTO-211H (biphasic) cells, and human breast cancer MCF-7 cells. Dose-dependent cell death was observed in MSTO-211H cells but not in MCF-7 cells, although cellular uptake of MNPs was observed in both cell types. Mesothelioma NCI-H28 and NCI-H2052 cells showed behavior more similar to that of breast cancer MCF-7 cells than that of mesothelioma MSTO-211H cells.

Ultrasmall Superparamagnetic Magnetite Nanoparticles as Glutamate-Responsive Magnetic Resonance Sensors.

Glutamate, the primary excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, plays a pivotal role in synaptic signaling, learning, and memory. Abnormal glutamate levels are implicated in various neurological disorders, including epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease, and ischemic stroke. Despite the utility of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) in diagnosing such conditions, the development of effective glutamate-sensitive contrast agents remains a challenge. In this study, we present ultrasmall, citric acid-coated superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles

Kinetics of cadmium(II) uptake by mixed maghemite-magnetite nanoparticles.

In the present study, batch adsorption experiments involving the adsorption of Cd(II) ions from aqueous solutions have been carried out using mixed maghemite-magnetite as adsorbent. The uptake capacity of Cd(II) ions by mixed maghemite-magnetite increased with an increase in the pH of the adsorbate solution. An increase in adsorbent dosage increased Cd(II) removal but decreased adsorption capacity and it was found to follow the pseudo-second-order model. Cd removal from a solution containing 1.5 mg/L initial concentration of Cd(II) decreased from 1.9 to 1.3 mg/g upon increasing the temperature

Aminodextran containing magnetite nanoparticles for molecular biology applications: preparation and evaluation.

Within the framework of medical diagnosis, the main objective is the development of hydrophilic magnetic particles for the generic capture of the nucleic acids in order to enhance the sensitivity. The strategy used in this work is based on the synthesis of cationic and hydrophilic magnetic nanoparticles bearing aminodextran. The synthesis was performed using two different processes: (i) coprecipitation of the ferrous and ferric salts in the presence of an aqueous solution of aminodextran and (ii) via adsorption of aminodextran on iron oxide nanoparticles. The obtained particles are characteriz

Remediation of mercury contaminated saltwater with functionalized silica coated magnetite nanoparticles.

The study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of dithiocarbamate functionalized silica coated magnetite nanoparticles (NPs) for Hg decontamination of saltwater either contaminated with Hg alone or with As and Cd. For this, the residual levels of Hg in seawater were assessed and Hg-contaminated or Hg+As+Cd-contaminated seawater toxicity to aquatic biota, before and after the sorption process, was compared. The results showed that under highly competitive conditions (water salts, Cd and As), the removal of Hg from seawater, by using these magnetic NPs, for the lowest concentration (50μg/L) was supe

Incorporation of magnetite nanoparticle clusters in fluorescent silica nanoparticles for high-performance brain tumor delineation.

Bifunctional nanoprobes with both magnetic and optical contrast have been developed for ultra-sensitive brain tumor imaging at the cellular level. The nanoprobes were synthesized by simultaneously incorporating a magnetite nanoparticle cluster and fluorescence dyes into silica encapsulation by a sol-gel approach under ultrasonic treatment. The nanoprobes maintain superparamagnetic behavior at room temperature and possess enhanced transverse relaxivity and good photostability. As a glioma targeting ligand, chlorotoxin was covalently bonded to the surface of the nanoprobes. In vitro cellular upt

Development and Evaluation of Crocetin-Functionalized Pegylated Magnetite Nanoparticles for Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

Liver cancer remains among the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. This is due to many reasons, including limitations of available drugs, late diagnosis due to the overlapping symptoms with many other liver diseases, and lack of effective screening modalities. Compared to conventional chemotherapy, targeted drug delivery systems are advantageous in many ways, as they minimize drug resistance and improve therapeutic value for cancer patients. Nanomaterials, in general, and nanoparticles, in particular, possess nm size, which provides a high surface area for a great extent of func
