PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to test the validity of magnetocardiography (MCG) in the estimation of neonatal cardiac rhythm using a single channel superconductive quantum interference device (SQUID).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our study population consisted of 50 neonates who were delivered normally between 37-41 weeks of gestation from clinically uncomplicated pregnancies. There was also a neonate included in the study in which the diagnosis of "hypoplastic left heart syndrome" was demonstrated by U/S Doppler examination. Maternal age ranged from 18 to 39 years (mean=29.15, SD=6.13)

The electrical activities of the heart causes weak changes of the magnetic field, which can be recorded as magnetocardiogram (MCG). Fetal cardiac magnetic activity is measured in the order of less than 10 pT. An advance of the novel technology of a superconducting quantum interference device enabled the first recording of fetal MCG (FMCG) in 1974. In Japan, FMCG instrument (MC6400, Hitachi High-Technologies Ltd) was approved as a diagnostic tool by Japanese Government in 2003 owing to the cooperative studies of Tsukuba University, National Cardiovascular Center and Hitachi Ltd. FMCG offers sim

Since 1985, magnetocardiographic (MCG) mapping has been carried out in patients with severe ventricular arrhythmias, related to primary cardiomyopathy and ischaemic heart disease, for the purpose of non-invasive localization of the arrhythmogenic substrate or to screen patients at risk of sudden death. Data reported by several authors have demonstrated that magnetocardiography is useful to investigate non-invasively some of the possible electrogenetic abnormalities underlying clinical arrhythmias and to identify patients at risk of sudden death through the detection of late magnetic fields and

OBJECTIVE: To examine the possible use of magnetocardiography in the diagnosis of fetal arrhythmias.
DESIGN: Investigation of routinely examined pregnant women, as well as women referred because of arrhythmias or other reasons.
PARTICIPANTS: Sixty-three women between the 13th and 42nd week of pregnancy.
METHODS: Recording of 189 fetal magnetocardiograms, of which 173 traces (92%) demonstrated sufficient fetal signal strength to permit evaluation. After digital subtraction of the maternal artefact, all fetal complexes were identified and the recording was examined for arrhythmic events.

BACKGROUND: Currently, there is a paucity of accurate, convenient, rapid, and efficient diagnostic approaches for myocardial infarction with non-obstructive coronary arteries (MINOCA) in patients who have undergone coronary angiography (CAG) or coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) confirming non-obstructive coronary arteries, particularly when the ECG is normal or non-diagnostic. Given that MINOCA is pathologically characterized by myocardial ischemia and abnormal local electrical activity, magnetocardiography (MCG), which can sensitively detect changes in myocardial depolarization

BACKGROUND: Rapid diagnostic screening is an unmet need in patients with suspected cardiomyopathy (CM). The authors recently demonstrated in a retrospective study that magnetocardiography (MCG) may be a suitable tool to detect CM.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to prospectively evaluate the accuracy of MCG as a screening tool in patients with suspected CM.
METHODS: MCG uses a superconducting quantum interference device to detect the magnetic field of the heart. In another recent retrospective study by the same investigators, a T-beg-Tmax (MCG score) ≥0.051 identified patients with CM (dilated,

Magnetocardiography constitutes a new tool for monitoring fetal cardiac activity. The fetal magnetocardiogram (FMCG) recorded noninvasively over the maternal abdomen is detectable with high temporal resolution and permits analysis of all parts of the PQRST waveform. In this way measurements of cardiac time intervals, including the QT interval, become possible. The following article constitutes the first report of antenatal detection of QT prolongation in two fetuses by FMCG.

Magnetocardiography provides a new, alternative method for fetal surveillance. This method allows the registration of changes in the magnetic field produced by the fetal cardiac system. In comparison to fetal ECG, the fetal magnetocardiogram (fMCG) is not affected by intermediate tissue, in particular by the insulating effect of the vernix caseosa. Furthermore fMCG's with a good signal noise ratio can be obtained in the second trimester. A multichannel biomagnetometer allows the non-invasive measurement of the magnetic signals produced by the fetus. Examples of dta and evaluation techniques ar

A case of fetal atrial flutter successfully recorded by magnetocardiography (MCG) is reported. Initial ultrasonography revealed frequent fetal atrial extrasystoles at 31 weeks of gestation. Fetal MCG was recorded using a multichannel MCG system at 31, 35 and 38 weeks of gestation. A series of fluctuations in the baseline of the MCG were noted at 35 and 38 weeks of gestation, which were revealed to be atrial flutter P waves. The averaged MCG showed that the fetal arrhythmia was an atrial flutter with a 3:1 atrioventricular block. The diagnosis was confirmed by neonatal electrocardiogram. Fetal

OBJECTIVE: The evaluation of right ventricular volume overload in the presence of a right bundle branch block based solely on the results of an electrocardiogram is difficult. The purpose of this study was to purify acute right ventricular volume unloading from the tangential magnetocardiography.
METHODS: We measured the tangential (x-y plane) magnetocardiogram and electrocardiogram simultaneously in nine patients with a secundum atrial septal defect. The magnetocardiograms were obtained before surgical closure and during the immediate postoperative period using the 32-channel superconducting

Patients with angina pectoris with non-obstructive coronary artery disease (ANOCA) often present to cardiology outpatient clinic or emergency departments with manifestations mimicking acute coronary syndrome (ACS). As a working diagnosis defined by angina pectoris in the absence of obstructive coronary arteries, ANOCA requires a stepwise diagnostic process-one that incorporates coronary functional assessments and provocative tests. Magnetocardiography (MCG) is a diagnostic modality with the potential to distinguish mild myocardial ischemic in patients with suspected ANOCA from nonischemic card

BACKGROUND: The electrophysiology of long QT syndrome (LQTS) in utero is virtually unstudied. Our goal here was to evaluate the efficacy of fetal magnetocardiography (fMCG) for diagnosis and prognosis of fetuses at risk of LQTS.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We reviewed the pre/postnatal medical records of 30 fetuses referred for fMCG because of a family history of LQTS (n=17); neonatal/childhood sudden cardiac death (n=3), or presentation of prenatal LQTS rhythms (n=12): 2° atrioventricular block, ventricular tachycardia, heart rate < 3(rd) percentile. We evaluated heart rate and reactivity, cardiac

Fetal magnetocardiography (fMCG) registers the magnetic field generated by the fetal heart. In contrast to the fetal electrocardiogram, fECG permits non-invasive registration of fetal heart activity and documentation of all parts of the PQRST-wave-forms from the second trimenon onwards. This facilitates the determination of cardiac time intervals and establishment of reference values for different stages of pregnancy. We examined 53 women in 104 recordings from the 10th week of gestation onwards (1 to 10 recordings per individual). The fMCG (37 magnetic channels, sampling rate 1024 Hz, bandwid

Fetal magnetocardiography (fMCG) provides direct non-invasive assessment of fetal cardiac electrophysiology, enabling detailed evaluation of cardiac rhythm, conduction, and repolarization. However, the clinical adoption of conventional fMCG has been limited by its reliance on superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) systems, which require cryogenic cooling and specialized infrastructure. Optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) have emerged as a promising cryogen-free alternative with the potential to broaden access to fetal electrophysiological assessment. This review summarizes the t

BACKGROUND: Magnetocardiography (MCG) is a non-invasive technique and to characterize the magnetic field, a pseudo-current conversion was used. The role of MCG in detecting left atrial (LA) dysfunction in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) is unknown.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate LA function using MCG in patients with PAF and healthy subjects, to identify possible indices to diagnose PAF.
METHODS: We enrolled a total of 70 subjects including 26 healthy volunteers (group 1) and 22 marathon runners (group 2) who did not exhibit any cardiac abnormalities, and

Ischemic heart disease (IHD) remains a major public health burden worldwide. It is estimated that one third of adults in the United States has some form of IHD, including more than 17 million with coronary artery disease (CAD) and nearly 10 million with angina pectoris [1]. Nevertheless, the detection of myocardial ischemia in patients with presumed CAD remains a challenge in contemporary practice.

In the framework of this study quantitative parameters are presented which, derived from magnetocardiographic maps, aid in making a conclusion about ischemia in the myocardium. The analysis is based on the examination of 86 patients with unstable angina, of which 53 exhibited myocardial ischemia with high probability (Group I: angiographically proven stenosis of at least 50% in a coronary artery of first or second order and positive troponin), while in the 33 other patients myocardial ischemia could be ruled out with high probability (Group II: angiographically clean coronary bed and normal tr

BACKGROUND: Arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM) is a primary cardiomyopathy associated with mechanical and electrical dysfunction, making diagnosis a clinical challenge. This feasibility study investigates whether Optically Pumped Magnetometer (OPM)-based magnetocardiography (MCG), which offers complementary spatial information about cardiac electrical activity compared to ECG, can identify biomarkers in ACM patients.
METHODS: MCG data were acquired using an array of 16 OPMs. After signal processing and artifact removal via Independent Component Analysis (ICA), two-dimensional vector magnetoc

We report a case of fetal Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome diagnosed prenatally by magnetocardiography (MCG). At 32 weeks' gestation, the fetus was diagnosed to have a paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia by ultrasonography and direct fetal electrocardiogram (ECG). Transplacental fetal therapy by maternal oral administration of propranolol resolved the fetal tachyarrhythmia. Although the wave forms of the fetal MCG at 32 weeks' gestation were normal, the fetal MCG at 35 weeks' gestation showed a short PR interval and a long QRS complex duration with a delta wave, indicating WPW syndrome
