Dynamical freezing for magnetometry in an interacting spin ensemble.

Understanding and controlling non-equilibrium dynamics in quantum many-body systems is a fundamental challenge in modern physics1-5, with profound implications for advancing quantum technologies. Typically, periodically driven systems in the absence of conservation laws thermalize to a featureless 'infinite-temperature' state, erasing all memory of their initial conditions6-8. However, this pattern can break down through mechanisms such as integrability9, many-body localization2,3,10,11, quantum many-body scars4 and Hilbert space fragmentation12,13. Here we report the experimental observation

Identification of non-organic instability by sway magnetometry.

This paper describes the application of sway magnetometry, which objectively measures stability, to assist in the identification of non-organic instability. Three subject groups were studied; 14 normal subjects, 14 subjects with organic dizziness, and 19 subjects assessed as having possible non-organic dizziness before further clinical investigation. Eight of these 19 were subsequently classed as having non-organic dizziness on grounds of their history, clinical examination and standard audio-vestibular investigations. Movement in the horizontal plane at the hips was measured by sway magnetome

Cytotoxicity and solubility evaluation of two types of whiskers by cell magnetometry.

OBJECTIVES: We investigated two types of whiskers, an antimony-containing tin-oxide-coated aluminum borate whisker (CABW) and an aluminum borate whisker (ABW), which are asbestos substitutes, in order to evaluate the safety of these fibers. METHODS: The cytotoxicity and solubility of CABW and ABW were evaluated by cell magnetometry, LDH assay and solubility test. RESULTS: ABW was found to be cytotoxic by cell magnetometry and slightly less soluble than CABW. In addition, it was found that the solubility of both fibers was intermediate between that of chrysotile and rock wool, as compared to

Determination of language dominance with synthetic aperture magnetometry: comparison with the Wada test.

Cerebral dominance for language function was investigated with synthetic aperture magnetometry (SAM). The results were compared with those of the Wada test. SAM is a spatial filtering technique that enables demonstration of the spatiotemporal distribution of oscillatory changes (synchronization and desynchronization) in magnetoencephalography (MEG) signals elicited by specific brain activation. MEG was conducted during a silent reading task in 20 consecutive preoperative neurosurgical patients who also underwent a Wada test. The spatial distribution of oscillatory changes related to silent rea

Sub-Ensemble Isolation in SERF Magnetometry Enabled by Micrometer-Scale Polarization Control.

Conventional understanding of a spin-exchange relaxation-free (SERF) atom ensemble pertains to the common perception that the rapid exchange of atom state finally results in uniform time evolution of the whole ensemble. However, in this study, we demonstrate that by manipulating pumping polarization in a micrometer level, misalignment between the time evolution of different sub-ensembles can be created within a single SERF ensemble with unprecedented independency. A novel pumping system consisting of a miniaturized 87Rb vapor cell and a space-variant polarization metasurface is developed for t

Volumetric localization of epileptic activities in tuberous sclerosis using synthetic aperture magnetometry.

BACKGROUND: Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a novel noninvasive technique for localizing epileptic zones. Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is often associated with medically refractory epilepsy with multiple epileptic zones. Surgical treatment of TSC requires accurate localization of epileptogenic tubers. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to introduce a new MEG technique, synthetic aperture magnetometry (SAM), to volumetrically localize irritable zones and clarify the correlations between SAM, dipole modeling and anatomical tubers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight pediatric patients wit

Quantum Magnetometry with Orientation beyond Steady-State Limits in Cavity-Magnon Systems.

We propose a transient vector quantum magnetometry protocol based on cavity-magnon systems. By exploiting finite-time dynamics initialized from a reservoir-engineered squeezed steady state, our scheme retains residual squeezing-induced quadrature noise reduction, which suppresses transient added noise and enhances the short-time signal-to-noise ratio beyond conventional unsqueezed steady-state limits. IQ demodulation of orthogonal cavity-output quadratures enables crosstalk-free reconstruction of all three components of a transient magnetic field, providing access to both its magnitude and ori

Nanoparticle manipulation with a carbon fiber tip in an electron microscope forμ-SQUID magnetometry.

We report a carbon-fiber-tip based nanomanipulation system integrated into a scanning electron microscope for individual nanoparticle (NP) manipulation on a surface. Electrochemically etched amorphous carbon fiber tips with excellent mechanical rigidity and sub-100 nm apex radii effectively reduce the van der Waals adhesion and enable reliable positioning of about 100 nm or larger size NPs with about 100 nm precision. This system combines a piezoelectric bimorph for vertical tip motion, a four-quadrant piezo-tube for two-dimensional fine tip control and a two-dimensional piezoelectric walker f

Postural stability of preoperative acoustic neuroma patients assessed by sway magnetometry: are they unsteady?

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to evaluate the preoperative postural stability of acoustic neuroma patients using sway magnetometry. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective two-center study. METHODS: Fifty-one patients (mean age, 53 years) diagnosed with unilateral acoustic neuroma on magnetic resonance imaging at two tertiary referral centers were studied. Preoperatively, each patient had sway patterns (with eyes open and with eyes closed, and standing on foam) recorded for 120 seconds by sway magnetometry. Path length for 30 seconds was calculated. The Romberg coefficient (path length with eyes open divid

Engineered Zn-doped magnetite nanoparticles as high-performance tracers for ultrasensitive atomic magnetometry.

Atomic magnetometry (AM) enables ultrasensitive magnetic biosensing under weak fields, yet its performance is often limited by a persistent mismatch between AM operating principles and the magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) tracers. Here we develop AM-specific tracers by engineering Zn-doped iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) with size control and surface modification to balance colloidal stability and high remanence. The optimal dopamine-modified 19 nm Zn-doped IONPs exhibit a remanence signal approximately 100 times higher than that of VivoTrax, enabling pT-level AM detection from as few as 160 label

Efficient Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Waveguide Polarizing Splitters for High-Sensitivity Chip-Scale Atomic Magnetometry.

High-sensitivity spin-exchange relaxation-free atomic magnetometers represent the frontier of quantum sensing, yet conventional bulky polarizing beam splitters (PBSs) remain a critical barrier to chip-scale integration. Here, we report an integrated polarimetry architecture based on a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) waveguide polarization splitter (WPS). By leveraging the synergy between the Bragg-selective reflection of patterned CLCs and total-internal-reflection-induced helicity inversion, this approach enables the efficient spatial decoupling and parallel emission of orthogonal circular p

Tuberous sclerosis: localizing the epileptogenic tuber with synthetic aperture magnetometry with excess kurtosis analysis.

The hallmark of tuberous sclerosis is the presence of multiple cortical tubers. Identifying the epileptogenic tubers is difficult and often requires invasive intracranial electroencephalograph (EEG) monitoring. We report on a patient with tuberous sclerosis upon whom the novel magnetoencephalography (MEG) technique of synthetic aperture magnetometry (SAM) with excess kurtosis (g2) analysis was performed for localization of the epileptogenic tuber. Simultaneous electroencephalography (EEG) was also performed. MEG data, as analyzed by SAM(g2), were superimposed on the patient's MRIs. In the flui

Localization of epileptic foci in Children with childhood absence epilepsy by magnetoencephalography combined with synthetic aperture magnetometry.

This present study was aimed to investigate the localizable diagnostic value of magnetoencephalography (MEG) combined with synthetic aperture magnetometry (SAM) in childhood absence epilepsy (CAE). Thirteen CAE patients underwent MEG detection at resting state and after hyperventilation, and then the epileptic foci were located by SAM. In the thirteen CAE patients, epileptic foci were found in five cases (38.5%), and they were all located in the bilateral frontal lobe, suggesting that the frontal lobe in some CAE patients may serve as the epileptic foci. Our findings indicate that MEG combined

Localization of epileptic foci in children with intractable epilepsy secondary to multiple cortical tubers by using synthetic aperture magnetometry kurtosis.

OBJECT: Magnetoencephalography (MEG) has been typically used to localize epileptic activity by modeling interictal activity as equivalent current dipoles (ECDs). Synthetic aperture magnetometry (SAM) is a recently developed adaptive spatial filtering algorithm for MEG that provides some advantages over the ECD approach. The SAM-kurtosis algorithm (also known as SAM[g2]) additionally provides automated temporal detection of spike sources by using excess kurtosis value (steepness of epileptic spike on virtual sensors). To evaluate the efficacy of the SAM(g2) method, the authors applied it to rea

Magnetoencephalographic analysis of cortical oscillatory activity in patients with brain tumors: Synthetic aperture magnetometry (SAM) functional imaging of delta band activity.

Abnormal focal slow wave activity on electroencephalography and magnetoencephalography (MEG) is often seen in patients with various brain pathologies and MEG is capable of localizing cortical oscillatory activity with enhanced accuracy. In addition, MEG with synthetic aperture magnetometry (SAM) can depict changes in cortical oscillatory activity tomographically. Using SAM, we recorded cortical rhythms in patients with a brain tumor and evaluated the tomographic appearance of focal slow wave activity in relation to clinical signs and symptoms. Spontaneous MEG recordings were obtained in 15 pat

Compositional control of the effective magnetic anisotropy in Mn and Co substituted spinel nanoparticles.

It has been shown through density functional theory (DFT) calculations that the magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MAE) for iron-based spinel nanoparticles can be altered through the addition of varying amounts of transition metals into their spinel structures. In this work, seven monodisperse spherical nanoparticle series were synthesized with varying amounts of Fe, Mn, and Co to target specific effective anisotropy (Keff) values that were calculated using DFT, giving the formula: Fe3-x-yMnxCoyO4. The Keff values determined from DC magnetometry ranged from 46-128 kJ m-3, increasing upon the addit

Human cardiac measurements with diamond magnetometers.

The heart produces small magnetic signals, but detecting them without touching the body and without heavy shielding equipment remains a major challenge. In this study, we demonstrate a noninvasive method to measure these signals using compact quantum sensors made from diamond. These sensors operate at room temperature and can detect extremely weak magnetic fields produced by the heart, even outside highly shielded environments. By averaging signals over many heartbeats and using noise suppression techniques, we successfully recorded clear magnetocardiography traces. Although current measuremen

Three methods for measuring the Earth's magnetic field intensity in Apis mellifera (Hymenoptera: Apidae) drone congregation areas.

The presence of magnetite in the abdomen of Apis mellifera suggests a role in magnetic signal perception, aiding orientation and navigation. Reproduction occurs in drone congregation areas (DCA), which are spatially and temporally stable, appearing in spring-summer during regionally specific mating flight times (midday to evening), when Earth's magnetic field intensity (EMFI) often increases. This coincidence points to a possible link between magnetism and DCA location. We evaluated 3 EMFI measurement methods-2 mobile apps (Crowdmag, Phyphox) and a low-cost magnetometer-at 3 known DCA in Argen

Digital workflow to measure the mandibular range of motion using different jaw tracking technologies.

The analysis of the mandibular range of motion (ROM) includes the evaluation of maximum opening, deviation upon opening, and amplitude of the left and right excursive movements and protrusion. Conventionally, ROM assessment has been directly measured in the patient's mouth by using a ROM ruler. The development of jaw tracking systems, such as magnetometry and photometric devices, allows the digital assessment of the mandibular ROM. The present manuscript describes the clinical protocols for recording and measuring the mandibular ROM by using different jaw tracking systems.

Magnetic nanowires for rapid and ultrasensitive isolation of DNA from cervical specimens for the detection of multiple human papillomaviruses genotypes.

Detecting human papillomavirus (HPV) is central in diagnosing and monitoring HPV-related disease. However, limited sensitivity and the wide variability of the HPV genome pose challenges in the identification of HPV genes, particularly high-risk types. This study reports the development of polyethyleneimine-conjugated magnetic nanowires (PEI-MNWs) and their use in the isolation, identification, and analysis of multiple genotypes of HPV DNA from cervical cancer specimens. The nanowires are electrochemically doped with a high density of magnetic nanoparticles and biotin moieties during potentiost
