Mahonia aquifolium in patients with psoriasis vulgaris - an intraindividual study.

Psoriasis vulgaris is a skin disease with a multi-factorial genesis where no causal treatment is known. Based on our own pilot studies, we set up a randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Mahonia aquifolium bark extract in psoriasis patients. From autumn 1990 to spring 1992 we treated 82 patients of all severity gradings, recruited by 22 family physicians. Patients were told to apply two types of ointment (verum/ placebo) one to the left side of their body the other to the right. After an average treatment period of four weeks, patients as well as p

Mahonia-derived carbon dots for dual-ion ratiometric sensing and cellular bioimaging.

The presence of hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) and silver ions (Ag+) in pharmaceutical systems poses significant safety concerns due to their toxicity and bioaccumulation potential. Therefore, the development of rapid, reliable, and matrix-tolerant sensing platforms is highly desirable. Herein, ultra-small carbon quantum dots (CDs, ∼0.982 nm) were synthesized from Mahoniae Caulis extract and m-phenylenediamine (m-PD) as carbon and nitrogen sources. The natural heteroatoms and phytochemicals in Mahoniae Caulis endowed the CDs with abundant surface functionalities, strong green fluorescence, and exc

Alkaloids from Mahonia bealei posses anti-H⁺/K⁺-ATPase and anti-gastrin effects on pyloric ligation-induced gastric ulcer in rats.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the underlying mechanism(s) of the total alkaloids (TA) from Mahonia bealei in treating pyloric ligation-induced gastric ulcers in rats. Animals were sacrificed after 19 h of the ligation. Gastric acid, peptic activities, mucin levels, H(+)/K(+)-ATPase activities and the gastrin level were analyzed. To improve the accuracy of the observations, IPP 6.0 software was introduced to measure the area of ulcer. TA (18.56 mg/kg/day, i.g.) showed an antiulcer effect by significantly decreasing the gastric ulcer areas (11.28 mm(2)) compared with model group (

Construction of a ratiometric fluorescence sensor using Mahonia fortunei leaf-derived N-CDs and Eu3+ for smartphone-assisted portable and visual monitoring of tetracycline residues in food.

In this study, N-CDs were combined with Eu3+ to construct a ratiometric fluorescence sensor (N-CDs@Eu3+) for the determination of tetracycline (TC). The nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) with good water solubility, excellent fluorescence performance, and high stability successfully prepared by using the leaves of Mahonia fortunei leaf as the carbon source and ethylenediamine as the nitrogen source through a one-step thermal solvent method. In the presence of TC, the fluorescence intensity of N-CDs at 510 nm was quenched due to fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), while the fluoresce

Evidence for the efficacy and safety of topical herbal drugs in dermatology: Part I: Anti-inflammatory agents.

Topical herbal drugs have for centuries been used for treating skin ailments. Although they are currently widely accepted by patients, their scientific esteem among dermatologists in particular is limited. A variety of herbal drugs for topical application deserves consideration regarding their widespread use or their still ill-defined potential with respect to their benefit/risk ratio. Clinically, camomile (Chamomilla recutita) and hamamelis preparations look particularly well documented. While the final proof of efficacy in common dermatoses such as atopic dermatitis is still lacking, there i

Isolation and characterization of antimicrobial compounds in plant extracts against multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii.

The number of fully active antibiotic options that treat nosocomial infections due to multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) is extremely limited. Magnolia officinalis, Mahonia bealei, Rabdosia rubescens, Rosa rugosa, Rubus chingii, Scutellaria baicalensis, and Terminalia chebula plant extracts were previously shown to have growth inhibitory activity against a multidrug-resistant clinical strain of A. baumannii. In this study, the compounds responsible for their antimicrobial activity were identified by fractionating each plant extract using high performance liquid chromato

Complementary and alternative medicine for psoriasis: what the dermatologist needs to know.

Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use is common among patients with psoriasis. CAM modalities include traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), herbal therapies, dietary supplements, climatotherapy, and mind/body interventions. In this review, evidence from clinical trials investigating the efficacy of CAM for psoriasis is reviewed. There is a large amount of evidence from controlled trials that have shown that the combination of TCM with traditional therapies for psoriasis is more efficacious than traditional therapies alone. Herbal therapies that have the most evidence for efficacy are

Extracts from Traditional Chinese Medicinal Plants Inhibit Acetylcholinesterase, a Known Alzheimer's Disease Target.

Inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) is a common treatment for early stages of the most general form of dementia, Alzheimer's Disease (AD). In this study, methanol, dichloromethane and aqueous crude extracts from 80 Traditional Chinese Medical (TCM) plants were tested for their in vitro anti-acetylcholinesterase activity based on Ellman's colorimetric assay. All three extracts of Berberis bealei (formerly Mahonia bealei), Coptis chinensis and Phellodendron chinense, which contain numerous isoquinoline alkaloids, substantially inhibited AChE. The methanol and aqueous extracts of Coptis chi
