Critical mass and positioning in mainstream deaf education.

This article examines how deaf students and interpreters experience positioning within mainstream educational settings, with a focus on environments where a critical mass-defined as multiple deaf students and interpreters-is present. Drawing on interviews with 41 formerly mainstreamed deaf individuals and interpreters, the study explores how critical mass influences engagement, participation, and perceived membership in the school community. Findings suggest that critical mass enhances access to Deaf Community Cultural Wealth (DCCW) and fosters collaborative positioning. These environments str

Loneliness among students with special educational needs in mainstream seventh grade.

The goals of this study were twofold. The first aim was to explore loneliness prevalence in typically developing students, students with ASD and students with motor and/or sensory disabilities in mainstream 7th grade in Belgium. The second aim was to explore the relations between number of friends, friendship quality, social self-concept on the one hand and loneliness on the other for each of these three groups, and to compare them across groups. In this study, 108 students with special educational needs (SEN; i.e., 58 students with ASD and 50 students with motor and/or sensory disabilities) w

Prevalence of autistic spectrum disorder in children attending mainstream schools in a Welsh education authority.

All mainstream primary schools in Cardiff were invited in July 1998 to participate in a prevalence survey of autistic spectrum disorder. Teachers of each class filled in a questionnaire based on ICD-10 criteria for autistic disorders. The Autism Spectrum Screening Questionnaire (ASSQ) was completed on children identified with problems identified by the questionnaire. A total of 11692 children born between 1 September 1986 and 31 August 1990 were screened: 234 (2%) children were identified as requiring an ASSQ; 151 of 234 (65%) ASSQs were returned. Of the 151, 60 children (52 male, 8 female; 40

Bringing physician nutrition specialists into the mainstream: rationale for the Intersociety Professional Nutrition Education Consortium.

Given the prevalence of nutritionally related chronic diseases in American society, the training of physicians should include a focus on the relations of diet to disease. Yet, despite scientific data, public interest, US government reports, society studies, and congressional mandates, the teaching of nutrition in medical schools and residency programs remains inadequate. The authority whom patients most wish to consult for information on health-their physician-thus remains insufficiently informed about the role of diet in the prevention and treatment of disease. New efforts must be initiated t

[Spoken and written language abilities of remedial class children placed back into mainstream education].

Current literature emphasizes the role of the speech-language therapist with regard to language learning disabled children. A lack of research regarding the language abilities of the older language learning disabled child was, however, identified. The possibility of continued spoken and written language problems in aid class children who have been placed back into mainstream education, served as a motivation for this research project. The empirical survey was administered on twenty-eight Afrikaans and English speaking ex-aid class children. According to experimental aims the subjects' level of

Deaf Student-Interpreter Relationships and Feedback Practices in K-12 Mainstream Deaf Education.

This study explores Deaf individuals' and sign language interpreters' perspectives on what it is like to work together in K-12 education. A group of 41 formerly mainstreamed Deaf individuals and interpreters offers insights into interactional dynamics (e.g., the deaf student-interpreter relationship) that influence interpreters' work, deaf students' participation and learning, and feedback practices. This study illustrates the significance of the deaf student-interpreter relationship and suggests a correlation between this relationship and deaf students' participation and positioning in mainst

"Together on the Way": Occupational Therapy in Mainstream Education-A Narrative Study of Emerging Practice in Switzerland.

In Switzerland, recent changes in legislation have reformed special needs education; more children with special needs are now integrated into mainstream schools. Health professionals such as occupational therapists are not embedded in the Swiss education system, but pediatric occupational therapists are starting to work at schools, with the aim of enabling children's full participation as school students. This is bringing a change to the practice of pediatric occupational therapists. Cultural, political, and social factors differ in many ways from those of other countries where most of the cur

Poly-substance use and sexual risk behaviours: a cross-sectional comparison of adolescents in mainstream and alternative education settings.

BACKGROUND: Surveys of young people under-represent those in alternative education settings (AES), potentially disguising health inequalities. We present the first quantitative UK evidence of health inequalities between AES and mainstream education school (MES) pupils, assessing whether observed inequalities are attributable to socioeconomic, familial, educational and peer factors. METHODS: Cross-sectional, self-reported data on individual- and poly-substance use (PSU: combined tobacco, alcohol and cannabis use) and sexual risk-taking from 219 pupils in AES (mean age 15.9 years) were compared

Performance evaluation of mainstream large language models in autoimmune hepatitis patient education: a comparative study of readability, quality, and reliability.

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a chronic immune-mediated liver disease that requires long-term management, in which effective patient education plays a critical role. With the rapid development of large language models (LLMs), AI-generated health information is increasingly accessed by patients; however, the readability, quality, and educational suitability of LLM-generated AIH-related content remain insufficiently evaluated. METHODS: Five widely used LLMs-ChatGPT, Doubao, DeepSeek, Wenxin Yiyan, and Tongyi Qianwen-were assessed based on their responses to 20 frequently asked AIH p

Staff perceptions and experiences of using Key Word Signing with children with Down syndrome and their peers in the first year of mainstream primary education.

BACKGROUND: Key Word Signing (KWS) is one system that can be used to support the communication needs of children with Down syndrome (DS) who attend mainstream school. The success of KWS in schools is mediated by staff experiences and perceptions of KWS. The current study is one of the first to explore KWS use in mainstream schools. AIMS: To explore the perceptions and experiences of teachers and special needs assistants (SNAs) with reported varying levels of experience, using KWS with children with DS and their peers in the first year of mainstream primary school. Performance evaluation of mainstream large language models in cataract science popularization Q&A: a comparative study of readability, quality, and educational suitability.

BACKGROUND: Cataract is one of the main causes of visual impairment and reversible blindness worldwide, and it mainly affects the elderly population. Clinically accurate and sufficiently readable patient education materials play a crucial role in this regard. With the rapid development of large language models (LLMs), patients are increasingly obtaining health information generated by artificial intelligence (AI); however, the reliability of online medical information is often questionable. This study systematically evaluated the readability, quality, and educational suitability of mainstream
