[Malassezia folliculitis].

In this review, we discuss Malassezia folliculitis (MF), which is an inflammation in the hair follicles caused by different Malassezia species. The prevalence of MF in the population worldwide ranges from 1% to 17%. Clinically, it may be difficult to distinguish from acne vulgaris, as it presents as erythematous 2-4 mm large papules and pustules on the back, chest and neck. Adequate diagnostic methods, including microscopy or biopsy, are essential to confirm the MF diagnosis, and to ensure initiation of the appropriate anti-fungal treatment.

[Malassezia infections].

Although Malassezia yeasts are a part of the normal microflora, under certain conditions they can cause superficial skin infection Pityriasis versicolor, Malassezia folliculitis. Lipophilic yeasts are being considered as major opportunistic pathogens for a very long time. Most of the yeasts show an absolute requirement for long fatty acid chains and specific procedures are required for their isolation, conservation and identification. To date, the genus is composed of one non lipid-dependent species M. pachydermatis and lipid-dependent species M. furfur, M. sympodialis, M. globosa, M. obtusa,

[Cutaneous Malassezia infections and Malassezia associated dermatoses: An update].

The lipophilic yeast fungus Malassezia (M.) spp. is the only fungal genus or species which is part of the physiological human microbiome. Today, at least 14 different Malassezia species are known; most of them can only be identified using molecular biological techniques. As a facultative pathogenic microorganism, Malassezia represents the causative agent both of superficial cutaneous infections and of blood stream infections. Pityriasis versicolor is the probably most frequent infection caused by Malassezia. Less common, Malassezia folliculitis occurs. There is only an episodic report on Malas

Invasive Malassezia Infections.

The Malassezia species are dimorphic fungi that require lipids such as olive oil for their growth. They are constituents of the normal human skin microbiota and can affix to the host or other surfaces through the establishment of biofilms. Malassezia species are accountable for superficial mycoses like folliculitis. Additionally, they are capable of causing invasive infections, such as of the bloodstream, in neonates and immunocompromised patients, albeit infrequently. Catheter-associated bloodstream infections in neonates are the most commonly reported invasive cases. Remarkably, unlike other

Malassezia (pityrosporum) folliculitis.

Malassezia (Pityrosporum) folliculitis is a fungal acneiform condition commonly misdiagnosed as acne vulgaris. Although often associated with common acne, this condition may persist for years without complete resolution with typical acne medications. Malassezia folliculitis results from overgrowth of yeast present in the normal cutaneous flora. Eruptions may be associated with conditions altering this flora, such as immunosuppression and antibiotic use. The most common presentation is monomorphic papules and pustules, often on the chest, back, posterior arms, and face. Oral antifungals are the

Genusmalassezia are now divided to fourteen species. Different species will start or aggravate different skin diseases. In the seborrheic dermatitis, M.restricta will play an important role, in the atopic dermatitis, M.globosa and/or M.restricta are major cutaneous microflora. The availability of new tools such as genomic and proteomic analyses has begun to provide a new insight into the pathogenetic mechanisms involved.

Malassezia virulence determinants.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Malassezia yeasts are associated with a number of dermatologic and systemic diseases in humans and animals. Pityriasis versicolor is amongst these diseases and represents one of the most common human skin diseases. Beyond that, the role of Malassezia yeasts in the pathogenesis of other skin diseases such as psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis and confluent and reticulate papillomatosis is discussed but remains less clear. Clear pathogenetic mechanisms of the above-mentioned diseases are not known so far. The review presents new findings on virulence factors of Malassezia yeasts

[Malassezia related diseases].

The genus Malassezia is now divided into eleven species. Different species initiate or aggravate different skin diseases. In seborroheic dermatitis, M. restricta play an important role, while in atopic dermatitis, M. globosa and/or M. restricta are major cutaneous microflora. M. globosa is a causative species of tinea versicolor, and this species is also a causative species of malassezia folliculitis. We should therefore obtain better knowledge of the ecological and pathogenic roles of malassezia.

Identification of Malassezia species isolated from some Malassezia associated skin diseases.

BACKGROUND: The genus Malassezia represents the dominant eukaryotic component of the skin microbial flora. There are complex interactions between this commensal and the skin, leading to various Malassezia-caused or Malassezia exacerbated skin conditions. OBJECTIVES: To identify Malassezia species in lesions of patients with pityriasis versicolor (PV), atopic dermatitis (AD), and seborrheic dermatitis (SD), as well as corresponding sites in healthy subjects according to the culture methods used for Malassezia species isolation. METHODS: Scrapings were collected from 80 patients (40 PV, 20 AD,

Malassezia and Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common debilitating neurodegenerative disease caused by a loss of dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra within the central nervous system (CNS). The process leading to this neuronal loss is poorly understood. Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a common benign inflammatory condition of the skin which mainly affects lipid-rich regions of the head and trunk. SD is caused by over proliferation of the lipophilic fungus Malassezia. PD and SD are strongly associated. The increased PD risk following an SD diagnosis (OR = 1.69, 95% CI 1.36, 2.1; p < 0.001) reported by Tanner

Malassezia-Can it be Ignored?

Genus Malassezia comprises of 14 species of "yeast like fungi," 13 of which are lipophilic and 1 is nonlipophilic. They are known commensals and in predisposed individuals they commonly cause a spectrum of chronic recurrent infections. They rarely also cause serious illnesses like catheter-related blood stream infections, CAPD associated peritonitis etc., Though these fungi have been known to man for over 150 years, their fastidious nature and cumbersome culture and speciation techniques have restricted research. Since the last taxonomic revision, seven new species have been added to this genu

Identification of Malassezia species.

Malassezia spp. are lipophilic unipolar yeasts recognized as commensals of skin that may be pathogenic under certain conditions. The genus Malassezia now comprises of seven species. This study was aimed at using a simple practical approach to speciate Malassezia yeasts from clinical material. Seventy skin scrapings from patients with pityriasis versicolor infection, positive in 10% potassium hydroxide (KOH), were cultured onto modified Dixon's agar (mDixon's agar) and Sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA) and incubated at 32 degrees C. Speciation was done on the basis of Gram stain morphology, catalas

[Malassezia and atopic dermatitis].

Although many exacerbating factors for atopic dermatitis (AD) have been discussed, we are focusing on fungus antigen as a pathogenesis for this condition. About half of the patients were sensitized by Candida albicans and/or Malassezia furfur (MF) using IgE. Patients with severe eruption tended to have a higher concentration of specific IgE. IgE to purified antigens such as manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD), cyclophilin, and Malf2 from MF was also detected, while the pattern of positive IgE was varied among the patients so that the major allergen could not be determined. Skin testing gave

Malassezia folliculitis in China.

Superficial Malassezia folliculitis was diagnosed in 1-1.5% of all dermatology patients seen in a Dermatology Out-Patient clinic in Urumqi City, Xinjiang province, west China. It was most prevalent in healthy, middle-aged males in the warm seasons. This disease, first reported in 1969, is usually diagnosed as a systemic disease of immuno-compromised patients. Our findings indicate it is a relatively common superficial skin disease that can be managed with ketoconazole or itraconazole.

Update on the genus Malassezia.

Malassezia yeasts are commensals of normal human skin, but also cause pityriasis versicolor, seborrhoeic dermatitis and evidence is accumulating that they play a significant role in atopic eczema/dermatitis syndrome (AEDS; formerly atopic dermatitis). The taxonomy of the genus has changed considerably and is likely to change more in the future. Our understanding of the interaction between Malassezia and the host demonstrates that it has the paradoxical ability to both stimulate and suppress the immune response directed against it and there is a fine balance in its existence at the interface be

Malassezia dermatitis and otitis.

The incidence of dermatitis and otitis resulting from overgrowth of M. pachydermatis is great enough that cytological sampling techniques should be considered a routine part of the dermatological examination. Because most cases of MD and Malassezia otitis cannot be grossly distinguished from bacterial pyoderma and otitis, respectively, efficiency in performing cytology testing of skin and ear canal exudate is essential to the successful diagnosis and management of pruritic skin diseases and otitis. Although Malassezia infections are rarely primary, therapy can be instituted to remove the yeast

Malassezia spp. carbonic anhydrases.

Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) are essential metalloenzymes that catalyse the reversible conversion of CO₂ to bicarbonate, playing a crucial role in pH regulation, CO₂ sensing, and metabolic homeostasis. In Malassezia species, β-class CAs have emerged as promising drug targets for antifungal and dermatological applications, particularly in conditions such as dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. Among the studied Malassezia species, the carbonic anhydrases from M. globosa (MgCA), M. restricta (MreCA) and M. pachydermatis (MpaCA) have been extensively characterized, demonstrating significant functiona

Neonatal Malassezia furfur pustulosis.

BACKGROUND: Papulopustular eruptions of the face in neonates are frequently referred to as neonatal acne or sebaceous miliaria. Our findings suggest that there is an association between this type of eruption and Malassezia furfur infection. OBSERVATIONS: Direct examination of pustule smears showed M furfur yeasts in eight of 13 cases involving neonates with erythema and papulopustules of the face, neck, and scalp (mean age at onset, 22 days [range, 7 to 30 days]). The pustules were predominantly neutrophilic. Treatment with 2% ketoconazole cream applied topically twice daily was effective in
