The lethal intestino-cutaneous syndrome which we described in 1942 as malignant atrophic papulosis (MAP) has gained various other visceral sites. However, the cutaneous eruption remains the constant and pathognomonic symptom, which, despite its benign appearance harbours a serious prognosis because of the frequently very severe lesions in the small intestine, and sometimes of the nervous system. The very special histological structure shows zones of necrosis (dermal in the skin) due to vasculitis with a tendency to thrombosis, affecting the small vessels below the lesion, and with little or no

Malignant atrophic papulosis (MAP), also known as Degos disease, is an extremely rare disease that is characterized by its unique skin presentation (namely, central, porcelain-white atrophic lesions with a telangiectatic rim). MAP has the following 2 variants: cutaneous MAP is manifested in the skin alone, whereas systemic MAP affects the gastrointestinal tract, central nervous system, lungs, and other internal organs. Some patients who presented with only cutaneous symptoms at first may develop systemic symptoms several years later. Although the exact pathologic mechanisms are unclear, Magro

Malignant atrophic papulosis is a rare disorder characterized by pathognomonic cutaneous lesions that have been associated with multiple infarctive thrombotic lesions of other viscera, most notably the gastrointestinal tract and the central nervous system. Systemic involvement may develop from weeks to years after the onset of the characteristic cutaneous lesions or, rarely, may precede the cutaneous lesions. However, the existence of patients with a prolonged, purely cutaneous variant of this disease has been increasingly appreciated, and this brings into question the appropriateness of apply

BACKGROUND: Malignant atrophic papulosis is a rare and potentially lethal thrombo-occlusive microvasculopathy characterized by cutaneous papules and gastrointestinal perforation. The precise pathogenesis of this disease remains obscure.
CASE SUMMARY: We describe the case of a 67-year-old male patient who initially presented with cutaneous aubergine papules and dull pain in the epigastrium. One week after symptom onset, he was admitted to the hospital for worsening abdominal pain. Exploratory laparotomy showed patchy necrosis and subserosal white plaque lesions on the small intestinal wall, al

UNLABELLED: DEFINITION OF THE DISEASE: Malignant atrophic papulosis (MAP), described independently by Köhlmeier and Degos et al., is a rare, chronic, thrombo-obliterative vasculopathy characterized by papular skin lesions with central porcelain-white atrophy and surrounding teleangiectatic rim.
EPIDEMIOLOGY: Less than 200 cases have been described in the literature. The first manifestation of MAP usually occurs between the 20th and 50th year of life.
CLINICAL DESCRIPTION: The cutaneous clinical picture is almost pathognomonic. The histology is not consistent but in most cases it shows a wedg

A 49-year-old woman with typical skin lesions of Degos' disease was found to have an afferent pupillary defect, and altitudinal field loss. This loss was probably secondary to vascular occlusion in the optic nerve of a patient with a congenital anomalous retinal vascular pattern. The patient has had no other systemic involvement after a follow-up of 4 years. Three other patients seen in the past had eye involvement and involvement of the central nervous system and died between 1 and 16 years of the diagnosis. Multiple ocular manifestations of Degos' disease have been reported affecting the eye

Degos' disease (malignant atrophic papulosis) is a rare multisystemic disease with characteristic cutaneous lesions, abdominal symptoms and often rapidly fatal course. Our review of the reported intrathoracic involvement in the more than 60 reported cases of Degos' disease suggests that pleuritis and pericarditis are manifestations of the underlying pathophysiologic process. Seventeen of these reported cases were said to have intrathoracic lesions, which were, in most cases, incidental findings at autopsy. We present an illustrative report of a case in which chronic pleuritis and pericarditis

BACKGROUND: Degos disease is a frequently fatal and incurable occlusive vasculopathy most commonly affecting the skin, gastrointestinal tract and brain. Vascular C5b-9 deposition and a type I interferon (IFN) rich microenvironment are held to be pathogenetically important in the evolution of the vascular changes. We recently discovered the use of eculizumab as a salvage drug in the treatment of near fatal Malignant atrophic papulosis (MAP). The effects of eculizumab on the pathology of MAP are explored.
METHODS: Archival skin and gastrointestinal biopsy material was procured over a 2.5-year p

A 71-year-old male patient presented with malignant atrophic papulosis (Köhlmeier-Degos disease). He developed multiple distinctive cutaneous lesions. The histopathological findings showed an obliterated arteriole with a wedge-shaped area of ulcerated and necrobiotic dermis. Laboratory tests were within normal limits or not specific. Although the involvement of the gastrointestinal tract and other organs has been noted in approximately 60% of the reported cases, in this patient so far the skin seems to be the only involved site. There is no proven effective therapy for Köhlmeier-Degos disease.

Malignant atrophic papulosis (MAP) is a rare, obliterating vasculopathy affecting multiple systems, frequently with a poor prognosis. Although cutaneous lesions are often the initial presentation, systemic involvement is also common, usually with a fatal outcome. Involvement of the genitalia is very rare. We describe a 45-year-old male patient with multisytemic manifestation of MAP accompanied by painful penile ulceration. The pathogenesis of MAP is not yet fully understood and effective treatment choices are limited. In our case, the combination of pentoxifylline and dipyridamole failed to pr

The Authors report an exceptional case of Atrophic Malignant Papulosis (P.A.M.) or Degos disease, presenting as acute abdomen with ileal and multiple colic perforations. The disease is due to an occlusive, progressive, thrombotic vascular pathology affecting different parts of the body and may bring to death. Usually this rare disease presents with typical multiple papulous skin lesions, followed by a systemic involvement of the digestive, nervous, and visive tracts. Peritonitis and cerebral infarction are the most frequent causes of death.

A 49-year-old man presented with a 2-year history of weakness and sensory disturbances in the bilateral lower extremities, vesicorectal dysfunction, and progressive gait disturbances. Brain MRI revealed multiple ischemic and hemorrhagic cortical/subcortical lesions with patchy enhancement involving the frontal and parietal lobes, suggesting the possibility of distal perforating arteries injury. Spine MRI revealed lesions of the cervical and thoracic spinal cord with associated enhancement. The diagnosis of malignant atrophic papulosis (Degos disease) with central nervous system involvement was

UNLABELLED: Malignant atrophic papulosis sometimes known as Degos' disease is an idiopathic, uncommon condition with fewer than 200 occurrences documented. It is a chronic thrombo-obliterative vasculopathy characterised by papular skin lesions with a core porcelain-white atrophy and a surrounding telangiectatic border. We report a 15-year-old male patient with a recurrent history of hollow viscus perforation, which was managed on all the occasions with exploratory laparotomy and primary perforation repair. Additionally, the patient had a five month history of numerous, non-itchy, atrophic papu

Malignant atrophic papulosis (MAP), or systemic Degos disease, is an obliterative vasculopathy of unknown origin, characterized by erythematous papules found on the skin, central nervous system (Neuro-MAP) and gastrointestinal tract. Neurological involvement occurs in approximately 20% of systemic cases, is progressive and largely fatal. It can be described in two forms: 1) the parenchymal presenting with meningoencephalitis and meningomyelitis and 2) the neurovascular presenting with large cerebral infarcts, intracranial and subarachnoid hemorrhage, subdural hematoma and venous sinus thrombos

A new case of malignant atrophic papulosis (Köhlmeier-Degos disease) is reported. Vascular symptoms began at 17 months of age with cerebral ischaemia and progressive involvement of fingers and toes with torpid ulcers and apical necrotic amputations. At 6 years of age he developed chronic intestinal ischaemia with malabsorption and a new cerebral attack; in spite of anti-aggregant therapy the disease progressed and he died 7 months after diagnosis from a third cerebral ictus. Since the typical skin lesions of the disease were absent, the diagnosis was made on the basis of a pathological pattern

PURPOSE: To report multimodal imaging of a patient with Degos disease.
RESULTS: A 37-year-old male presented with typical Degos disease skin lesions, blurred near vision, peri-central right scotoma along with right mid-dilated unreactive pupil, no afferent pupillary defect, left ptosis and exotropia. He developed right painless conjunctival ischemia with dilated perilesional vessels and was treated by eculizumab and prostacyclin analogs. Despite four months of treatment, chorioretinal ischemia with subsequent atrophy appeared. Worsening of extracutaneous symptoms led to a treatment change (in

Malignant atrophic papulosis (MAP), or Degos syndrome, is a rare disorder of unknown etiology. It is characterized by a deep subcutaneous vasculopathy resulting in atrophic, porcelain-white papules. We report the case of a 42-year-old woman with a history of progressive systemic sclerosis who presented with painful subcutaneous nodules on her abdomen along with chronic atrophic papules on her upper and lower limbs. Biopsy results of both types of lesions revealed vascular thrombi without surrounding inflammation. We briefly review the literature on MAP and its association with various connecti
