Ocular lesions of bovine malignant catarrhal fever.

The ocular lesions of bovine malignant catarrhal fever were characterized in 15 naturally occurring and eight experimentally induced cases of the disease. Consistent findings included: lymphocytic vasculitis of retinal, scleral, posterior ciliary, and uveal vessels; uveitis, especially involving ciliary processes, ciliary body, and iris; and keratitis with corneal edema, neovascularization, and epithelial and endothelial degeneration. Lymphocytic ciliary neuritis and optic meningitis were found less frequently. Ultrastructural examination of the ciliary body and iris from one experimental calf

Malignant Catarrhal Fever in Cattle in the Irkutsk Region.

INTRODUCTION: Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) is a rare, under-explored lethal viral infection of cattle with gammaherpesvirus aetiological agents. Most often, the disease occurs on farms where cattle and sheep are kept together. However, other trigger mechanisms and environmental factors contribute. This study investigates the causation of MCF. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An outbreak of MCF occurred in June - August 2017 in Kharchev village in Irkutsk Oblast, Russia. In this paper, we provide epidemiological (sanitary status of pastures, watering places, and premises) and weather data during the o

Malignant catarrhal fever in bison, acute and chronic cases.

Acute malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) was diagnosed in 10 bison from 6 herds and ranging from 1 to 6 years of age. The pattern of clinical signs and morphologic lesions differed among bison. Combinations of corneal opacity, lacrimation, nasal discharge, depression, excess salivation, anorexia, diarrhea, melena, and hematuria were observed. Vasculitis characterized by lymphoid infiltrates in the adventia with variable extension into media and intima was found in multiple tissues in each animal. Fibrinoid vascular necrosis was rare. Ulceration in the alimentary tract was found in 9/10 bison, and

Immunohistochemical study of experimental malignant catarrhal fever in rabbits.

Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) is an often-fatal lymphoproliferative disease of a variety of ungulates that occurs worldwide. It is caused by either of the highly related but distinct gammaherpesviruses alcelaphine herpesvirus-1 (AlHV-1, wildebeest reservoir) or ovine herpesvirus-2 (OvHV-2, sheep reservoir). MCF in rabbits is an excellent model as it closely resembles the disease in susceptible ungulates that include cattle, deer and bison. In this study, newly available and previously characterized monoclonal antibodies specific for rabbit leucocyte differentiation molecules were used to per

Pathogenesis of 'sheep-associated' malignant catarrhal fever in rabbits.

Pathogenesis studies of experimentally produced sheep-associated malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) in laboratory rabbits are described. Animals were examined at intervals after inoculation. The principal change was a proliferation of lymphoid cells which began as soon as three days and became quite pronounced by 13 days after inoculation. The appendix, mesenteric lymph node and spleen were most obviously affected. The reason for this was a progressive increase in T-lymphocytes, which appeared to be a hyperplasia rather than neoplasia in T-dependent areas of these organs. Lymphoid cells also accu

Clinical and clinicopathologic observations in induced malignant catarrhal fever of cattle.

In an epizootic of malignant catarrhal fever in 1976/1977 in southern California, 166 cows (17%) died. Blood from one of those cows was used in transmission studies involving 8- to 14-month-old steers. In 17 (74%) of 23 inoculated steers, the disease was reproduced. The clinical signs in 8 of the diseased steers were characterized by an initially mild intestinal form of the disease, which suddenly fulminated and terminated in death within 1 to 3 days. No lesions or only mild oral or ocular lesions were noticed in this group, but in the other steers, such lesions predominated. It was concluded

Ibex-Associated Malignant Catarrhal Fever in Duikers (Cephalophus Spp).

Eight duikers, representing 3 different species cohoused in a single zoological collection, died in a 10-month period. Black, red-flanked, and yellow-backed duikers were affected, appearing clinically with a combination of anorexia, diarrhea, ataxia, tremors, and/or stupor, followed by death within 72 hours of onset of clinical signs. Consistent gross findings were pulmonary ecchymoses (8/8), generalized lymphadenomegaly (6/8), ascites (5/8), and pleural effusion (4/8). Dense lymphocyte infiltrates and arteritis affected numerous tissues in most animals. Ibex-associated malignant catarrhal fev

Seroprevalence of malignant catarrhal fever in cattle and sheep from South Brazil.

Malignant Catarrhal Fever (MCF) is caused by a group of gammaherpesviruses in the genus Macavirus. The virus is transmitted via nasal shedding from adapted hosts, such as sheep, which do not develop the disease, to non-adapted hosts such as cattle, pigs, bison, and deer, which can develop an often-fatal form of the disease. There is currently no specific treatment or vaccine available to control MCF, and the resulting losses significantly affect livestock industries worldwide. To assess the seroprevalence of MCF in southern Brazil, blood samples were collected from sheep and cattle reared simu

Malignant catarrhal fever in a goat: manifestation of virus-induced erythema multiforme.

Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF), caused by ovine herpesvirus 2 (OvHV2; Orthoherpesviridae, Macavirus ovinegamma2), has sheep as natural hosts. OvHV2 is an important macavirus globally that induces fatal disease in dead-end hosts. Goats, which can be infected subclinically with OvHV2, rarely develop MCF. A 28-wk-old female goat was presented with fever and multifocal crusty skin lesions. Histologic examination of a skin biopsy suggested erythema multiforme (EM), with pyoderma and dermal vasculitis. The doe was euthanized and subjected to postmortem and histologic examination. MCF was suspected

A review of the epidemiological, clinical, and pathological aspects of malignant catarrhal fever in Brazil.

Sheep-associated malignant catarrhal fever (SA-MCF), the form of MCF that occurs in Brazil, is a severe, frequently fatal, infectious disease caused by ovine gammaherpesvirus-2 (OvHV-2), in which sheep are the asymptomatic hosts and cattle and other cloven-hoofed animals are the accidental hosts. This review provides a critical analysis of the historical, epidemiological aspects and the estimated economic impacts associated with SA-MCF in Brazil. Moreover, the clinical manifestations and pathological lesions associated with SA-MCF in cattle are reviewed and discussed and the phylogenetic distr

[Clinical and pathological findings in an alpaca suffering from malignant catarrhal fever].

Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) is a worldwide occurring sporadic disease of cloven-hoofed animals. For the first time, this case report describes clinical and pathological as well as histopathological findings in an alpaca suffering from MCF caused by ovine herpesvirus 2. Clinical symptoms comprised apathy, dehydration, anorexia, and emaciation. These symptoms were unspecific and did not correspond to any known course of MCF in cattle. However, the findings of the pathological and histopathological examination showed broad analogies to the main findings in other ruminants infected with MCF. I

Malignant catarrhal fever in a captive American bison (Bison bison) in Italy.

Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) is a fatal, systemic disease of cattle and other domestic and wild ruminants that, in Europe, is caused by Ovine herpesvirus 2 (OvHV-2). American bison (Bison bison) are highly susceptible to the disease. An adult American bison, housed in a zoo in southern Italy in close cohabitation with a group of domestic sheep (Ovis aries aries) displayed clinical signs that resembled the acute form of MCF. By real-time polymerase chain reaction, OvHV-2 DNA was detected intravitam in blood, in nasal and ocular swabs, and postmortem in tissue samples of the bison. By indirec

Malignant catarrhal fever in a bison (Bison bison) feedlot, 1993-2000.

A fatal enteric syndrome was identified in American bison (Bison bison) at a large feedlot in the American Midwest in early 1998. An estimated 150 bison died of the syndrome between January 1998 and December 1999. The syndrome was identified as malignant catarrhal fever (MCF), primarily the alimentary form. Clinical onset was acute, and most affected bison died within 1-3 days; none recovered. Consistent lesions were hemorrhagic cystitis, ulcerative enterotyphlocolitis, and arteritis-phlebitis. Vasculitis was milder and more localized than that in cattle with MCF, and in contrast to the situat

Transmission of a malignant catarrhal fever-like syndrome to sheep: preliminary experiments.

The transmission of a malignant catarrhal fever-like syndrome to sheep is reported. Fetal sheep between 40 and 66 days gestation were inoculated intravenously with viable cells either from a red deer with clinical malignant catarrhal fever or from rabbits with the disease. Of the 21 fetuses in the experiment only five were born live and of these four developed clinical signs similar to malignant catarrhal fever in other species and died or were killed 10, 16, 47 and 175 days after birth. The fifth lamb remained unaffected. Histology of the four affected lambs revealed a generalised lymphoproli

Experimental transmission of bovine malignant catarrhal fever to a bison (Bison bison).

Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) was transmitted to a bison (Bison bison) by intravenous inoculation of whole blood obtained from a calf showing signs of experimental MCF. Clinical signs evident on the 25th day following inoculation included depression, weakness, epiphora, serous nasal discharge, watery diarrhea and multifocal ulcerations of oral mucosa. Gross and histopathological lesions observed in the bison were similar to those in cattle with a few qualitative differences. Compared to bovine cases, MCF in bison was characterized by more severe edema, congestion, and hemorrhage and accumula

Transmission patterns of malignant catarrhal fever in sheep and cattle in Karnataka, India.

Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) presents a sporadic yet significant threat to livestock and wildlife. A comprehensive investigation in Karnataka, India into the prevalence and transmission patterns of sheep-associated MCF (SA-MCF) was conducted. A total of 507 sheep peripheral blood leukocyte samples from 13 districts along with 27 cows and 10 buffalo samples from various regions in Karnataka were tested for SA-MCF infection i.e. Ovine gammaherpesvirus 2 (OvHV-2) using heminested PCR. Furthermore, serum samples collected from 73 cows and 15 buffalo suspected of MCF were tested using a commerci

Cross-Reactivity of Neutralizing Antibodies among Malignant Catarrhal Fever Viruses.

Some members of the gamma herpesvirus genus Macavirus are maintained in nature as subclinical infections in well-adapted ungulate hosts. Transmission of these viruses to poorly adapted hosts, such as American bison and cattle, can result in the frequently fatal disease malignant catarrhal fever (MCF). Based on phylogenetic analysis, the MCF viruses (MCFV) cluster into two subgroups corresponding to the reservoir hosts' subfamilies: Alcelaphinae/Hippotraginae and Caprinae. Antibody cross-reactivity among MCFVs has been demonstrated using techniques such as enzyme linked immunosorbent and immuno

A geographic cluster of malignant catarrhal fever in moose (Alces alces) in Norway.

Three cases of lethal sheep-associated malignant catarrhal fever (SA-MCF) in free-ranging moose (Alces alces) were diagnosed in Lesja, Norway, December 2008-February 2010. The diagnosis was based on PCR identification of ovine herpesvirus 2 (OvHV-2) DNA (n = 3) and typical histopathologic lesions (n = 1). To study the possibility of subclinical or latent MCF virus (MCFV) infection in this moose population and in red deer (Cervus elaphus), we examined clinically normal animals sampled during hunting in Lesja 2010 by serology and PCR. Sera from 63 moose and 33 red deer were tested for antibodies
