The objective of this study was to determine if sheep could be averted to Mascagnia rigida, a toxic plant found in the semiarid region of northeastern Brazil. Twelve female sheep naïve to M. rigida were randomly allocated to two treatment groups: control (treated with 15 mL water orally by a drenching gun) and lithium group (treated with 150 mg LiCl/kg body weight orally by a drenching gun). For conditioning, sheep were allowed to feed on M. rigida leaves for 15 min, followed by LiCl or water administration. The time spent eating M. rigida leaves was measured. The conditioning was repeated dai

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Laticifers represent one of the most functionally striking secretory systems in angiosperms, characterizing entire families and being the latex considered a key element in defense against herbivores in plants. However, they are still understudied, especially in clades where the secretions are not so copious, which is the case of the Malpighiaceae. Here, we undertake a study combining anatomy, phylogeny, ancestral state reconstruction to unravel the structure, distribution, and evolution of laticifers and other leaf anatomical traits in Galphimioid clade (Malpighiaceae), sa

Plant-based insecticides for vector control are urgently needed for Anopheles barbirostris, Culex quinquefasciatus, and Aedes albopictus which are the primary vectors of malaria, lymphatic filariasis, and dengue, respectively, in India and other South East Asian countries. In the present study, larvicidal, adulticidal, and repellent activities of acetone root bark extract of Hiptage benghalensis were tested against the larvae and adults of the three mosquito vectors. The acetone root bark extracts of H. benghalensis was more effective as larvicides with low LC(50) (11.15-16.78 ppm) and LT50 (1

The Malpighiaceae family comprises approximately 1,500 species distributed across tropical and subtropical regions and is recognized as a source of bioactive secondary metabolites. However, the metabolomic composition of many species remains poorly characterized. Therefore, this study aimed to characterize and compare the metabolomic profiles of 16 Malpighiaceae species collected from four Brazilian biomes (Amazon Rainforest, Atlantic Forest, Caatinga, and Cerrado). Hydroethanolic leaf extracts were analyzed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (U

Acerola (Malpighia emarginata DC.) is one of the richest natural sources of vitamin C and an important source of phenolic compounds, carotenoids, and bioactive polysaccharides. Although the fruit can be consumed fresh, it is more commonly processed into juices and frozen pulp, generating substantial amounts of by-products (pomace, peels, and seeds), corresponding to approximately 20-60% of the fruit biomass, with high phytochemical content. These fractions represent underutilized sources of bioactive compounds. This narrative review, supported by a structured literature search, integrates evid

The plant Kielmeyera rugosa Choisy (family Calophyllaceae), popularly known as 'pau-santo', is traditionally used in Brazilian folk medicine. Recently, the dichloromethane extract-dichloromethane partition from stems of K. rugosa (KR) has shown positive results in our cytotoxic screening programme. Therefore, the aim of this study was to validate the antitumour activity of KR on sarcoma 180 tumour-bearing mice. KR showed antitumour activity with both administration routes: intraperitoneal (50 and 100 mg/kg/day) and oral (100 and 200 mg/kg/day). Tumour growth inhibition rates were 40.8-34.9% an

Galphimine-B (G-B) is a bioactive compound isolated from the plant Galphimia glauca Cav. (Malpighiaceae) with central nervous system depressant properties previously described. In the present study, extracellular spiking activity records in either somatosensorial cortex or ventral tegmental area (VTA) neurons, were performed in rats after i.p. or local administration of G-B. None of the cortical neurons displayed significant changes induced by any of the applied doses. In VTA cells, two patterns of electrical discharge were recorded, bursting (57%) and nonbursting (43%) types. Systemic adminis

Spiders, abundant and diverse arthropods which occur in vegetation, have received little attention in studies investigating spider-plant interactions, especially in plants which have extrafloral nectaries (EFNs). This study examines whether spiders attracted to EFNs on the plant Heteropterys pteropetala (Malpighiaceae) function as biological protectors, mitigating leaf herbivory and positively impacting plant fitness, through manipulative experiments. Spiders are attracted to EFNs because, in addition to consuming the resource offered by these structures, they also consume the herbivores that

Malpighia glabra L., commonly known as acerola or Barbados cherry, is a non-commercial tropical fruit species in Thailand that is primarily consumed fresh by local communities. Limited scientific data have restricted its potential for future food applications. In this study, we investigated the nutritional composition, phenolic profiles, and in vitro biological activity of M. glabra fruits. Results demonstrated that the ripened fruits (100 g fresh weight) provided low energy (36.9 kcal) with negligible fat content but exceptionally high vitamin C content (838 mg). The ethanolic extract exhibit

At the intra-plant level, temporal and spatial variations in plant defense traits can be influenced by resource requirements, defensive priorities and storage opportunities. Across a leaf age gradient, cyanogenic glycoside concentrations in the rainforest understory tree Ryparosa kurrangii B.L. Webber were higher in young expanding leaves than in mature leaves (2.58 and 1.38 mg g(-1), respectively). Moreover, cyanogens, as an effective chemical defense against generalist herbivores, contributed to a defense continuum protecting foliar tissue during leaf development. Chemical (cyanogens and phe

Green acerola (Malpighia emarginata) is among the richest natural sources of vitamin C and represents a promising raw material for natural antioxidant food ingredients. Extraction of ascorbic acid from whole green acerola fruits was optimized using response surface methodology, with solvent composition and temperature as independent variables. Pure water at 35 °C provided the highest ascorbic acid recovery (340 mg g⁻¹ dry material) and reducing power, alongside strong antioxidant activity by ABTS and DPPH assays. The biological relevance of the optimized extract was evaluated using Saccharomyc

Byrsonima basiloba A. Juss. species is a native arboreal type from the Brazilian "cerrado" (tropical American savanna), and the local population uses it to treat diseases, such as diarrhea and gastric ulcer. It belongs to the Malpighiaceae family, and it is commonly known as "murici." Considering the popular use of B. basiloba derivatives and the lack of pharmacological potential studies regarding this vegetal species, the mutagenic and antimutagenic effect of methanol (MeOH) and chloroform extracts were evaluated by the Ames test, using strains TA97a, TA98, TA100, and TA102 of Salmonella typh

The effects of thermal (pasteurization and sterilization) and non-thermal (ultrasound and plasma) processing on the composition of prebiotic and non-prebiotic acerola juices were evaluated using NMR and GC-MS coupled to chemometrics. The increase in the amount of Vitamin C was the main feature observed after thermal processing, followed by malic acid, choline, trigonelline, and acetaldehyde. On the other hand, thermal processing increased the amount of 2-furoic acid, a degradation product from ascorbic acid, as well as influenced the decrease in the amount of esters and alcohols. In general, t

Malpighia glabra L. (Acerola), belonging to the family Malpighiaceae, is highly rich in phenolics, flavonoids and ascorbic acid content, which are collectively recognized for their potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Since ionizing radiation harm is primarily driven by excessive reactive oxygen species generation and persistent inflammation, this study aimed to explore the radioprotective potential of Malpighia glabra leaf extract (MLE) and identify its bioactive constituents. β-isoarborinol, afzelechin, engeletin, and flavonoid glycosides had been isolated from the ethyl acet
