Evolutionary dynamics of the chloroplast genome in Abutilon (Malvoideae, Malvaceae).

The genus Abutilon Mill. (Malvaceae) comprises approximately 178 species distributed across tropical and subtropical regions, many of which hold significant ornamental, economic, and medicinal value; yet its taxonomic classification remains challenging. In this study, six species were sequenced from herbarium specimens, and the chloroplast (cp.) genomes of ten additional species were assembled de novo from publicly available raw data. Three previously reported cp. genomes were also incorporated to characterise cp. genome structure, identify polymorphic loci, and perform phylogenetic analyses.

Comparative genomics and phylogenetic analysis of three Malvaceae species on the basis of chloroplast genomes.

INTRODUCTION: The Malvaceae family shows rich species diversity and has substantial economic and medicinal value. However, the frequent interspecific hybridization among members of this family has resulted in confused phylogenetic relationships among the groups, limiting the usefulness of traditional classification methods. METHODS: This study aimed to investigate the phylogenetic relationships among selected taxa of Malvaceae by evaluating 23 chloroplast (CP) genomes, including three newly assembled CP genomes. Among these three genomes, the CP genome of Hibiscus schizopetalus L. was reporte

Primary photosensitization and contact dermatitis caused by Malachra fasciata Jacq. N.V. (Malvaceae) in sheep.

Farmers from Paraiba state, Northeast Brazil, claim that Malachra fasciata causes cutaneous lesions in sheep. To test its toxicity the plant was harvested daily and fed ad libitum for 21 days to 3 sheep as the sole food source (# 1-3). An additional sheep (# 4) was maintained as a control. Cutaneous lesions of photosensitization initiated after 7 days and increased continuously over the next 21 days. The dose ingested varied between 129 g/kg to 175 g/kg. Alopecia, hyperemia and crusting were observed in the animals. On day 22, sheep 3 was euthanized. At necropsy, no gross or microscopic altera

Protective Effect of Anthocyanin-Enriched Polyphenols from Hibiscus syriacus L. (Malvaceae) against Ultraviolet B-Induced Damage.

Anthocyanin-enriched polyphenols from the flower petals of H. syriacus L. (Malvaceae, AHs) possess anti-septic shock, anti-oxidant, and anti-melanogenic properties. However, whether AHs positively or negatively regulate ultraviolet B (UVB)-mediated photoaging and photodamage remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the protective effect of AHs against UVB-induced damage. We examined the photoprotective effects of AHs on UVB-induced apoptosis, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, and mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS). AHs prevented UVB irradiation-induced apoptosis of HaCaT ker

Unraveling evolutionary relationships in the Sida generic alliance (Malvaceae, Malvoideae): a phylogenetic and cytotaxonomic overview.

Sida (Malvaceae), the largest Malveae-Abutilinae member, has poorly defined morphological limits which overlaps with 11 phylogenetically closely related genera that comprises the "Sida generic alliance". The 12 genera are distributed in the tropics especially in Brazil where one third of its species diversity is found. Evolutionary relationships within Sida generic alliance remain unresolved due to morphological convergence, limited taxon sampling, and lack of integrative approaches including cytogenetic data. We reconstructed the phylogeny of Sida and allied genera using a multilocus dataset

Sidastrum paniculatum (L.) Fryxell (Malvaceae): A Promising Source of Bioactive Sulfated Flavonoids Against Aedes aegypti L.

Aedes aegypti L. is known as the most relevant vector mosquito for viruses such as yellow fever, chikungunya, dengue, and Zika, especially in places with unplanned urbanization, and erratic water supply. Plants used in folk medicine have become a useful source of active compounds with the potential to control the dissemination of Ae. aegypti. Compounds isolated from Malvaceae sensu lato have been previously reported as larvicides, repellents, and insecticides. Recent studies have demonstrated the anti Ae. aegypti activity of sulfated flavonoids, an uncommon type of flavonoid derivatives. This
