Teleoperated Live-Line Distribution Working Robot Based on Human-Robot Shared Control.

Traditional live-line work on distribution power lines relies on manual labor, characterized by high risk, high labor intensity, and high training costs; thus, developing distribution live-line working robots is an essential path to replacing manual operations. However, the working environment is highly unstructured and dynamic, with challenges such as complex outdoor lighting and unpredictable wind conditions. Existing robots primarily use either master-slave teleoperation or fully autonomous modes, which impose heavy mental burdens on operators, are highly susceptible to misoperation, and ex

Machine Learning Enabled Fluorescent Anti-Freezing Core-Shell Hydrogel Realizing Deep-Sea Morse Code Communication for Human-Machine Interaction Engineering.

Underwater intelligent systems demand flexible materials with robustness, environmental tolerance, and functional integration. Hydrogels, which combine flexibility with conductivity, show promise but often fail under harsh conditions. Herein, an antifreezing, antiswelling hydrogel with core-shell architecture was fabricated by ion concentration gradient modulation. Polyacrylamide/poly(acrylic acid) pregel immersed in Al3+ solution produced a concentration gradient. The external layer generates a dense metal oxide film, acting as a robust protective armor, while the inner polymer network preser

Magnetically levitated metasurface enabling tangible and bidirectional human-machine interaction.

Mechanical metasurfaces are deformable surfaces that reconfigure their shape in response to external stimuli, with growing applications in interactive displays and human-machine interfaces. However, many existing systems are either too fragile for physical interaction or too slow to match human response. Moreover, their incompatibility for integrating functional systems constrains seamless interaction with humans. We developed a robust, rapidly responsive, and multifunctional soft metasurface capable of intuitive interaction with humans. The soft surface reconfigures through magnetic actuation

EEG Based Dynamic Functional Connectivity Analysis in Mental Workload Tasks With Different Types of Information.

The accurate evaluation of operators' mental workload in human-machine systems plays an important role in ensuring the correct execution of tasks and the safety of operators. However, the performance of cross-task mental workload evaluation based on physiological metrics remains unsatisfactory. To explore the changes in dynamic functional connectivity properties with varying mental workload in different tasks, four mental workload tasks with different types of information were designed and a newly proposed dynamic brain network analysis method based on EEG microstate was applied in this paper.

Origami-Mediated Low-Voltage Electret Soft Robotic Actuators for Human-Machine Haptic Interfaces.

Soft robotic actuators often require relatively high driving voltages, which limit their portability, safety, and compatibility with compact electronic systems in wearable haptic interfaces. Achieving strong electromechanical coupling at low voltage while maintaining mechanical compliance remains a key challenge for soft actuator design. Here, we present an origami-mediated low-voltage electret soft robotic actuator that integrates mechanical compliance and electrical functionality within a symmetric multilayer architecture. Two double-layer fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) electret films

A NbOI2-based flexible piezoelectric sensor for acoustic signal acquisition and gesture-controlled human-machine interaction systems.

Driven by the demand for low-power sensing in wearable electronics and intelligent human-machine interaction, two-dimensional piezoelectric materials, which combine self-powered capability, mechanical flexibility, and integration compatibility, provide a promising material platform for high-performance flexible sensors. In this work, a flexible piezoelectric sensor based on two-dimensional NbOI2 was constructed on a polyimide substrate. The device exhibits stable and repeatable piezoelectric responses over bending angles from 30° to 75° and operating frequencies from 0.47 to 2.10 Hz. At a bend

Ultrasensitive Mesh-Structured Position-Sensitive Detectors Enabling Eye Tracking for Human-Machine Interaction.

Eye tracking provides highly efficient, intuitive, and seamless human-machine interaction by measuring eye movements and revealing user attention and intention. Currently, video-based eye tracking systems, while achieving sub-degree accuracy, suffer from high power consumption due to data acquisition and processing of redundant pixels. Here, we present an energy-efficient eye-tracking system employing a position-sensitive detector (PSD) with a graphene photoconductive mesh, which operates with only four readout signals, reducing data volume by over three orders of magnitude compared to video-b

Optimized electroencephalogram and functional near-infrared spectroscopy-based mental workload detection method for practical applications.

BACKGROUND: Mental workload is a critical consideration in complex man-machine systems design. Among various mental workload detection techniques, multimodal detection techniques integrating electroencephalogram (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) signals have attracted considerable attention. However, existing EEG-fNIRS-based mental workload detection methods have certain defects, such as complex signal acquisition channels and low detection accuracy, which restrict their practical application. METHODS: The signal acquisition configuration was optimized by analyzing the f

Absence of DOA Effect but No Proper Test of the Lumberjack Effect: A Reply to Jamieson and Skraaning (2019).

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to evaluate the relevance of the critique offered by Jamieson and Skraaning (2019) regarding the applicability of the lumberjack effect of human-automation interaction to complex real-world settings. BACKGROUND: The lumberjack effect, based upon a meta-analysis, identifies the consequences of a higher degree of automation-to improve performance and reduce workload-when automation functions as intended, but to degrade performance more, as mediated by a loss of situation awareness (SA) when automation fails. Jamieson and Skraaning provide data from a process control scena

Near-Perfect Automation: Investigating Performance, Trust, and Visual Attention Allocation.

OBJECTIVE: Assess performance, trust, and visual attention during the monitoring of a near-perfect automated system. BACKGROUND: Research rarely attempts to assess performance, trust, and visual attention in near-perfect automated systems even though they will be relied on in high-stakes environments. METHODS: Seventy-three participants completed a 40-min supervisory control task where they monitored three search feeds. All search feeds were 100% reliable with the exception of two automation failures: one miss and one false alarm. Eye-tracking and subjective trust data were collected. RESUL

False alerts in air traffic control conflict alerting system: is there a "cry wolf" effect?

OBJECTIVE: The aim is to establish the extent to which the high false-alarm rate of air traffic control midair conflict alerts is responsible for a "cry wolf' effect-where true alerts are not responded to and all alerts are delayed in their response. BACKGROUND: Some aircraft collisions have been partly attributed to the cry wolf effect, and in other domains (health care and systems monitoring), there is a causal connection between false-alarm rate and cry wolf behavior. We hypothesized that a corresponding relationship exists in air traffic control (ATC). METHOD: Aircraft track and alert sy

Effect of seat position on maximal linear velocity in wheelchair sprinting.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between seat position and linear velocity in wheelchair sprinting. Nine male subjects with various physical disabilities participated in the experiment. Linear velocity was determined by analyzing the filmed performance of subjects wheeling at maximum speed on a wheelchair ergometer. The results revealed no significant differences between the maximal linear velocities at each of the nine seat positions chosen for investigation. These findings suggest that given a limited variability in seat positions, maximal linear velocity will be

Human factors considerations for safe and scalable human-robot collaboration in construction: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Robotic systems are increasingly being introduced into construction to address persistent safety challenges, limited productivity growth, and skilled labor shortages. However, the collaboration between humans and robots introduces new interaction dynamics that can reshape human behavioral state and responses. While prior reviews have examined construction robotics from technological, application, and adoption perspectives, a construction-specific synthesis that systematically consolidates human factors across Human-Robot Collaboration (HRC) contexts remains limited. METHOD: This

Fiber-Based Triboelectric Nanogenerator for Mechanical Energy Harvesting and Its Application to a Human-Machine Interface.

Mechanical energy harvesters including piezoelectric nanogenerators, electromagnetic generators and triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG) used to convert the mechanical motion into electricity are more and more important in the recent decades. Specifically, the fiber-based TENG (FTENG) has gained considerable favors due to its flexibility, light weight, and high environmental tolerance for the wearable devices. The traditional FTENGs made of Teflon result in better performance but are not suitable for long-term wear in person. Here, we propose a novel FTENG using a flexible micro-needle-structur

Compact Series Visco-Elastic Joint (SVEJ) for Smooth Torque Control.

The design and control of a new series-viscous-elastic joint are presented. The proposed joint consists of 3D printed parts compressing nonlinear elastic silicone springs. The use of silicone springs is the main novelty of the system; they exhibit internal damping, which enhances system performance allowing a simpler and more stable control. Their stiffness allows the system to bear a torque of about 4.5 Nm at a deformation angle of about 20 degrees. In this article, the system is modeled using the Neo-Hookean material model and then characterized through experiments to build the joint torque

Exploring relationships of human-automation interaction consequences on pilots: uncovering subsystems.

OBJECTIVE: We attempted to understand the latent structure underlying the systems pilots use to operate in situations involving human-automation interaction (HAI). BACKGROUND: HAI is an important characteristic of many modern work situations. Of course, the cognitive subsystems are not immediately apparent by observing a functioning system, but correlations between variables may reveal important relations. METHOD: The current report examined pilot judgments of 11 HAI dimensions (e.g., Workload, Task Management, Stress/Nervousness, Monitoring Automation, and Cross-Checking Automation) across

Knowledge Distillation and Reinforcement Learning in a Human--Machine Collaboration Delivery System With a Robotic Arm.

Robotic arms are widely used in various aspects of human-robot collaboration. The primary goal of this study is to explore the usability of robotic arms for delivering objects to humans in dynamic environments. Traditional robotic arms often face limitations in path planning, such as difficulties adapting to dynamic environments and complex developmental processes. To overcome these challenges, this study employs reinforcement learning (RL) to train four models-the Approach RL Model, Delivery RL Model, Decision RL Model, and Merged Model-as alternatives to conventional path planning control. Automation Error Bias, Trust, and Dependence Behaviors in a Simulated Drone Collision Avoidance Task.

ObjectiveThis experiment examined how error biases of an imperfect automated decision aid system impacted trust and dependency behaviors in a simulated drone collision avoidance task.BackgroundPrior work on human-automation interaction indicates asymmetrical effects of error biases, misses, and false alarms, on compliance and reliance. Yet, it is unclear whether the effect is due to unbalanced perceptual salience of the automation errors or their trust toward the automated system.MethodSixty-eight participants interacted with a drone monitoring task with the assistance of a collision avoidance
